Shaka Smart rumors picking up steam and Texas fans are estatic

If you believe a prominent insider on Sam Webb's site this is where the winds are blowing currently. Webb also had a big update today on his hot board. Texas fans on their 247 site couldn't be happier btw.

Years from now, as Charlton Heston aka George Taylor, comes across the ruins of Crisler Arena... "Damn you Warde!" ... "You maniac!" ... "You blew the program up!"

As a casual fan, what are the reasons for the hate?

It would be nice to get something other than "This would be the worst thing EVER."

I mean, I looked him up and at least he did very well in the wife department.

He hasn’t exactly been blowing it out of the ballpark at UT.  Usually when trying to find a coach to hire for a well regarded job, you would try to poach successful coaches.  Not middling coaches with a below .500 conference record and no tournament wins on his current team

Look, Texas has big pockets and don’t be fooled about how Mo Bamba and other big recruits play there.

Shaka’s ride at VCU was a perfect storm of the correct personnel at a mid major playing a fast paced Full court press most of the game.  When he played better teams/coaches like Belien we obliterated their full court press- at that time he had no counter.  Now after 4 years at a BIG 12 school his highest finish is 4th in conference with only 2 tourney appearances and no wins??   Come on please pass on this coach- you might as well go with another mid major coach who is u proven.

If somebody with this record was hired over Saddi or Yaklich, they'd be entirely justified in bailing immediately.

I just want to see Sam tweet something like "50% on Billy Donovan coming to Michigan", then follow it up the next day with "55% on Billy Donovan coming to Michigan"

Shaka Smart will not be hired by Michigan. Billy Donovan will get a call, but he wants to stay in the NBA. He has a winning record overall in the insanely tough Western Conference. Even if he is fired by the Thunder there will be plenty of other NBA teams interested in him. Michigan would have to offer 7.5 to 8 million to even get Billy to consider to come. Juwan Howard will be interviewed and has a better shot of becoming the head coach than Billy, though it won’t be from a lack of trying on Michigan’s end to get Donovan. It’s still to early to tell what is going on, but I can promise you that Shaka is not going to be the one hired. Billy will get a call. Juwan will get an interview. Take that for what it’s worth, but it comes from someone with ties to the Michigan athletic department.

I think you’re over estimating Donovan’s value in the NBA...he has two top 15 talents in the league and has won a grand total of 3 playoff games in the last 2 seasons. The reason he would come to Michigan is for job security. Next season he would be coaching for his NBA life, or he could sign a 5 year deal with Michigan and take a little pay cut.

Donovan did take over a loaded team that was a couple years removed from making the NBA Finals, but seeing 3 teams pursue Monty Williams this past month makes me believe that he will eventually have another shot as a head coach in the NBA if he were fired.

The question is does Donovan want to return to college basketball and the different challenges it poses? And I wonder if there are only certain college basketball programs he would return for, like historically elite programs like UNC, Kansas, Kentucky or Duke?

Agree to disagree. They lost Durant his second year there and had this for a roster. They still proceeded to finish 6th in the West and have a winning record. That was just in his second year. He also was able to help convince PG to stay in OKC which was no small task. There are coaches that have had must better rosters in the West that have not had winning records. I’m not saying he’s a top 5 NBA coach, but he is at least middle of the pack as far as head coaches go. The NBA is a lot like the NFL. Failed coaches always get second and third chances and some of those failed coaches had/have losing records. Donovan has never had a losing record in the NBA. Even with the roster above.

Are you asking me or someone else? All I know right now is Juwan is definitely getting an interview and Billy is definitely getting a call. There might be a surprise or two as well, but I’ll hold off on spreading any rumors until it’s  something more solid. Marshall will not be coming here either. It’s honestly too early to tell. Unless they throw some really big money really fast in a surprising move, this could take a little while. So news will be slow going out because there’s not a lot for people to report.

What's weird is how willing they are to throw money at the football coach but not the basketball coach. Tony Bennett for example makes $1.8 million per. It's probably very unlikely he would come but what's the harm in throwing him $5-6 million and see if he bites?
