Interesting contrast between our program and the folks at the Central Ohio Sports Hedge Fund.

Meanwhile, Warde just publicly said he hasn't thought about firing Juwan
February 14th, 2024 at 12:59 PM ^
alas, now he has and we can expect things to start happening. Pull it down, warde. You can do this.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:01 PM ^
You can't divine anything from that. I wouldn't be surprised to see Warde do as little as possible as is his won't, but no AD on the planet would *publicly* say they were thinking about firing a coach regardless of their actual plans.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:31 PM ^
I agree with that. The fact that Warde went out of the way to compare it to the Harbaugh situation makes me nervous. If he just said, Juwan is our guy then it is the vote of confidence thing.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:17 PM ^
What's he supposed to say? "Yes, I've considered firing the coach but just haven't done it yet."
February 14th, 2024 at 1:20 PM ^
I think for the "Fire Juwan literally today" crowd this is just going to be evidence that it can be done.
I don't like it, but evidently if you're going to fire your coach at the end of the year this is how it's done now.
February 14th, 2024 at 12:45 PM ^
100% expected. They see garbage. They react. It doesn't always work. But they do it. We sit and wait. It rarely works.
February 14th, 2024 at 12:50 PM ^
what a strange turn of events. ohio fires their hoops coach and we're envious. the world, she-is-a-upside-down!
February 14th, 2024 at 12:56 PM ^
If Warde waits a year to fire Juwan, let's see which program is competing for a title first.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:08 PM ^
It has become pretty clear that OSU is much more focused on winning than we are, time will tell if the strategy works. I think it will be a shock (pleasant surprise?) if we out-perform them in football/basketball the next few years with our current approach.
I'm not saying we should go "all in" like they have, but putting a little more effort into NIL would be a start.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:40 PM ^
Is it really NIL, though? What's the culture - the roster - the development - game over game improvement - outlook for the future?
I support all things Maize & Blue - but, it doesn't seem like this train is going in the right direction.

Holtmann has a big buyout ( $17.5 MM). They must be printing money at Buckeye Capital Investment Partners, or whatever Ohio is being called now.
Juwan's seat has to be warm but he has as couple big recruits in the next class. Will Warde will follow suit soon?
Really amazing how good the schools are in football and many secondary sports and just have been total doormats the past couple years in basketball.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:34 PM ^
I think Juwan only has one really good recruit in next years class. I am willing to lose that recruit if it means a better coach.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:42 PM ^
Not to be super negative, but it's not like good recruiting has equaled good results under Juwan so far. That class with Houstan, Diabate, Jett, etc. was supposed to change the world of CBB.
February 14th, 2024 at 2:34 PM ^
Not disagreeing about keeping Juwan for the sake of really good recruits, but if he is canned you probably lose Rooths and Brooks, along with Dug, Reed and the rest of our upper class /graduate starters. So we are in a mess short term and long term.
February 14th, 2024 at 8:33 PM ^
The short term can’t get any worse. We’re literally last in the big ten and not even remotely competitive with most teams in the big ten.
February 14th, 2024 at 10:57 PM ^
Given up on this lost year, No NIT, maybe one victory the rest of the year? My short term is how we start next season.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:16 PM ^
Unless, there were any misconducts, why not wait until the end of the year. Maybe some violations?
February 14th, 2024 at 1:24 PM ^
Because now they have an entire month to search and recruit a new coach with little to no competition. Either that, or they ran out of or transferred all the booster money and didn't want to risk having to pay any of the bonuses.
February 14th, 2024 at 4:37 PM ^
But no coach worth having is free to talk to them or make a decision. Nothing is gained.
February 14th, 2024 at 10:29 PM ^
Do you really believe this?
February 14th, 2024 at 11:11 PM ^
They can be talking to agents and gauge interest through other means then directly reaching out to a coach.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:33 PM ^
Had to read the article at the link to figure out what in hell the OP was posting about. I dunno why it's so difficult to simply post content with clear, unambiguous titles and subject blurb.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:54 PM ^
The title was changed, hopefully that helps. But if you didn't know who the OSU basketball coach was in the first place (after all, the title did say "fires hoops coach holtmann"), you might have needed to read the article anyway. Sorry for the trouble.
February 14th, 2024 at 3:20 PM ^
You're right that I didn't know who OSU's coach was—I don't follow basketball nearly as closely as I do football. The reason I read the article was because I saw the note that the title had been edited, so it piqued my interest. Otherwise I would have skipped it figuring that it was about some community college coach.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:54 PM ^
If they can do it, we can do it.
February 14th, 2024 at 1:56 PM ^
Send link to Warde, oh never mind it won’t do any good.
February 14th, 2024 at 2:01 PM ^
See Warde, its possible to do is mid-season!
February 14th, 2024 at 2:22 PM ^
Fortunately for Mr Holtmann, there are many Ohio Universities. Dime-a-dozen, pretty much all the same... maybe one of the others will hire him.
February 14th, 2024 at 2:30 PM ^
Tough crowd down in C-Bus. I will freely admit that I haven't been paying close attention to MBB this season, or last season for that matter, but I thought Holtmann has done a pretty good job with mediocre rosters over the years. College Athletics: Where Money is in and loyalty/tradition is loooonnnng gone.
February 14th, 2024 at 2:58 PM ^
Holtmann has been the OSU coach for a while. If OSU has been having medicore rosters, that's on Holtmann.
February 14th, 2024 at 8:38 PM ^
Many down here wanted him gone last year
February 14th, 2024 at 4:15 PM ^
I think OSU is better than almost all community colleges. OSU purports to have high entrance requirements in terms of GPA & test scores.
However, they can not attract enough students so they allow anyone to enroll in one of their satellite campuses and then transfer to the main campus after 1 year.
My oldest daughter took a semester of college classes at OSU while she was in high school. She said the classes were really easy.
February 14th, 2024 at 5:22 PM ^
So it's possible to fire a coach before the end of the season?
February 14th, 2024 at 6:59 PM ^
Whether you like them or. not, just call them Ohio State.
you look like a douche calling them a community college.
February 14th, 2024 at 8:36 PM ^
Dang I was going to start a pool as to which of the two coaches was going to be fired first.
February 15th, 2024 at 1:45 AM ^
It appears the firing might be among the final acts by Gene Smith.
This will allow their new AD to focus on raising money - Texas A&M style.
Hopefully - he’s perfected the “Jimbo buyout” structure - and will use that in all O$U staff / coach contracts.

In 2022 Michigan was #9 in NIL and #7 in 2023. Not a lot money separating #2-10. TAMU was #1 in 2022 and University of Texas #1 in 2023.In 2023 #3 OSU spent $13.6million and Michigan $11.6 @ #7. Texas went crazy in 2023 they spent over $19 million whereas the #2 team Alabama spent $15 million. Their backup,Manning is well over $2 million and Ewers gotta be pushing $2 million himself.
