Ryen Russillo says stupid things
I listen to sports podcasts while doing chores around the house, driving to work, exercising, etc.
Today, I was doing the dishes and listening to Ryen Russillo's podcast (knowing I shouldn't have, cause some of his takes about college football drive me absolutely bananas) recapping the National Championship Game with Trent Dilfer. Russillo said two things that (a) really grinded my gears, and (b) I thought were totally ridiculous.
(1) "Yeah, man, [Georgia] was playing the right team, even if, like we all thought, the Peach Bowl [Georgia vs Ohio State] was the national title."
(2) "Ya know, 'flukey' always feels a little insulting, but there was like three specific busted plays in that Ohio State-Michigan game where I was like, 'What the hell happened there?' Like, if Ohio State and Michigan played 10 times, what do you think the record would be? Cause I don't think it'd be 5-5. I think Ohio State would win more of those games."
Dude.
What the hell are you talking about?
Those busted plays came from Jim Knowles' strategy to play balls-to-the-wall, aggressive-as-hell defense, despite having a secondary that can't do that. When Knowles recognized that wouldn't work and adjusted to a more conservative defense, Michigan just shredded them on the ground in the second half. They ended up winning by three scores in Columbus, and you read that as a fluke?
Then, Ohio State only makes the playoffs because USC face-plants in the PAC-12 championship game, but your take is still that Georgia-Ohio State was the national championship?
And, then, the icing on the cake is that you won't give Michigan the same benefit of the doubt when they had multiple "flukey" plays against TCU (and ref stuff)?
Get outta here.
(Obviously, there's no reason for me to get upset about a national jabroni's takes, but I did anyway.)

You foolishly listened to the podcast, and then took a double dose of foolishness by sharing this garbage with all of us.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:49 PM ^
But I sorta respect him for this, somehow. MGoBlog is a safe space for this sort of stuff.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:52 PM ^
Safe, but still a place to expect accountability
January 11th, 2023 at 7:53 PM ^
I dunno, Galapula. I guess I'll make sure to let all message board posts simmer as a draft for a day, so as not to piss of Pete here. I'd hate to ruin his day with 100 words.
January 12th, 2023 at 8:23 AM ^
If a post was made for every bad sports podcast hot take there would be like a thousand shitty posts per day, instead of ~20 there are now.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:55 PM ^
Was it foolish on your part to click on the post if you know it's foolish to listen to Russillo's podcast, making it foolish for you to read about someone's thoughts on his podcast?
January 11th, 2023 at 7:58 PM ^
Perhaps - you do make a good point. But your post is still foolish.
January 11th, 2023 at 8:00 PM ^
Okay, we're in agreement, then. You were singularly foolish, but I'm doubly foolish.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:19 PM ^
I listen to the Ryen Russillo podcast every week. It’s usually pretty good and Life Advice is hilarious.
January 12th, 2023 at 9:36 AM ^
This has absolutely nothing to do with this topic but I just wanted to say I've been here a LONG time and today is the first day I got to cast the upvote to take someone (in this case IndyPete) to 100 upvotes on a post!
January 11th, 2023 at 7:38 PM ^
“(Obviously, there's no reason for me to get upset about a national jabroni's takes, but I did anyway.)”
And made a thread about it, too!
January 11th, 2023 at 7:38 PM ^
No reason to get upset, even less reason to post a long screed about it
January 11th, 2023 at 7:40 PM ^
I kinda get it, if we played again osu wouldn't play cover 0. That being said I do think we would win 4 or 5 out of 10 because we are literally built to beat osu. I think OSU wins 3 out of 10 against Georgia and we would be lucky to win 2 of 10 against that team.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:58 PM ^
Only 4 or 5? That's all you give Michigan credit for because "we are literally built to beat OSU"? I'd say we win 8 out of 10 with the teams both have this year. Probably 9 or all 10, honestly. Next year might be different, but this year (and last year) we beat the crap out of them legitimately, and repeat games wouldn't be any closer.
As for Georgia, I maintain that this years Michigan team - with a good offensive game plan that uses QB runs and a legit passing game - goes 5-5 against UGA. Just cramming the RB between the tackles lets Michigan lose all 10...
January 11th, 2023 at 8:29 PM ^
I also think the x/x times this team wins argument is crap. You get one chance to play your best game and WIN THE GAME as said by Mitch McGary. So no OSU - you had your chance in your home stadium, with equally healthy teams, and in good weather to beat UM. From the 2nd half of that game on, they weren't even close. Sainristil knew they were going to fold and they did.
On the flip side, this is also why I don't believe UM should've beat TCU. They weren't ready in the 1st half and dong-punched themselves too many times that caught up to them in the long run. These hypothetical revisionist theories will drive you crazy if you keep going back to them.
January 11th, 2023 at 10:07 PM ^
Of course OSU would play cover 0. That’s what Knowles wants. In his mind, their D was only 5 plays away from winning!
January 11th, 2023 at 7:42 PM ^
Speaking of stupid takes, take a look at Nick Saban's (or his assistant's) ballot in the final Coaches Poll:
January 11th, 2023 at 7:50 PM ^
So how did Nick not put his team as #1??? He is slipping in his old age.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:51 PM ^
Not surprising, just further evidence as to the man he is. The epitome of a take my ball and go home type of guy.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:45 PM ^
I don’t give a fuck what anyone says. At the end of the day Michigan kicked Ohio State’s ass. They know it. Their fans know it. Their players know it. Their players know without a doubt that Michigan can do it again next year.
January 11th, 2023 at 8:23 PM ^
Yup. Who’s more scared of that game right now?
THE team that just got their asses kicked at home and is going to have to go on the road to play a more stacked M team without their Heisman candidate QB and receivers.
January 11th, 2023 at 9:43 PM ^
45-23 is not fluky.
January 12th, 2023 at 9:30 AM ^
And if it's fluky then that's because it should have been 52-23
"Forward progress" my ass
January 11th, 2023 at 7:46 PM ^
The "UM only won because of big plays" take has to be one of the most ignorant takes that has been played up by the national media and OSU slappies since The Game. I mean, are big plays not part of the game? Should UM have told OSU what play they were going to run before doing it. Should Edwards, Johnson or Loveland have pulled up before reaching the end zone because they needed to "earn" the TD. So dumb.
And by the way, prior or 2020, OSU was beating UM with those same type of big plays that UM is now doing to their rivals. Why is it acceptable to now beat teams only according to what the media deems as a mauling, grind it out game? People are not willing to give UM their due as a big play team because they previously ran the ball down opposing teams throats yet everyone was bitching that JJ and Co. needed to throw the long ball better. When they did, it was flukey or unearned.
Don't pander to the haters with their hater tots, folks.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:56 PM ^
Agreed. And his is stupider than most. He can take away "like three specific busted plays" and UM still wins. Most dumbasses say 5. He's special.
January 11th, 2023 at 8:01 PM ^
Great take!
January 11th, 2023 at 8:32 PM ^
Take away Georgia’s big plays against TCU and it’s a much closer game.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:46 PM ^
I don't know who this person is and I don't care at all what he thinks or says
January 11th, 2023 at 7:48 PM ^
Today, I was doing the dishes and listening to Ryen Russillo's podcast (knowing I shouldn't have, cause some of his takes about college football drive me absolutely bananas)
I hate the band Kiss, knowing that I don't listen to the band Kiss because it will drive me bananas.
Why people hate listen/watch is something I will never understand
Now, go listen to Jeff Beck
January 11th, 2023 at 7:48 PM ^
If it's someone associated with The Ringer and not Rodger Sherman, they know nothing about college football.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:50 PM ^
I'd listened to all the other podcasts I wanted to listen to, but still had more dishes to do. Probably just should've put on some Kiss or something instead. You're right. (Sorry, this was meant for the comment about Kiss.)
January 11th, 2023 at 10:20 PM ^
If you’re going to The Ringer for podcasts, I highly recommend listening to the Rewatchables podcast. This week’s episode is about Sideways.
January 12th, 2023 at 1:50 PM ^
I've been browsing the board for content. I liked your post.
People act like you need to be a disciple with info on the resurrection to make a post.
This dude is a prominent member of the media, and the ringer is awesome.
Now he's one of my least favorite dudes. But he's alright, I appreciate the post. Keep up the posting, that's what a sports forum is for.
I would rate the post a 6/10 on purity of post scale. No new information, but entertaining, and engageable.
January 12th, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^
Appreciate the support.
I've always been confused by the "info disciple" posts to which you refer that are clearly going to show up on the main page. (See: "Eyabie (sic) Okie in the Portal" or "Gemon Green has declared for the NFL draft".) What is the value in that if you know Seth is going to post about it 10 minutes later? I must be too new to posting here to understand.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:49 PM ^
I heard something similar on the Solid Verbal and it also annoyed me. Kind of like "OSU played one bad quarter against Michigan". So dumb.
This will continue for a while. The national media is enamored with OSU.
January 11th, 2023 at 8:12 PM ^
I mean, I saw this in some of the Way-too-Early Top 25s... It's like, Michigan has beaten OSU, soundly, two straight years; OSU's QB is widely expected to leave; Michigan's star RB unexpectedly stayed behind. Michigan loses a couple off of the OL; so does OSU, from a worse OL.
Result -- OSU #2, Michigan #3
I just couldn't connect those dots.
January 11th, 2023 at 9:46 PM ^
I gave up the Solid Verbal halfway through this season, it's really fallen off. Most of the time it seems like Dan isn't really interested in college football anymore. 45-23 is a beatdown, not the result of one quarter. Such an awful take. I think saying Ohio State had one good quarter (the first quarter) is way more accurate.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:50 PM ^
This post is garbage.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:56 PM ^
Thanks for your contribution and feedback. We'll take it into account going forward.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:50 PM ^
OSU/Georgia was the championship game because Michigan didn’t get to the title game. Plus it was the best game of the playoffs. If Michigan beat TCU, then the argument might be different.
January 11th, 2023 at 8:12 PM ^
uh, OSU didn't get to the title game either.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:52 PM ^
It’s Russilo so why did you expect reasonable and correct takes? Everyone associated with The Ringer (except for Kevin O’Connor) are pretty terribly sports analysts.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:58 PM ^
You don't like any of the other basketball guys like J. Kyle Mann or Sean Fennessy?
January 11th, 2023 at 7:53 PM ^
There has been a lot of this type of talk for weeks on XM radio. For some reason the media loves OSU. Heck, I think I even heard Fowler say during the National championship game that Georgia v osu was the real national championship. Hopefully after Michigan destroys osu for a 3rd straight season in Ann Arbor next November that narrative dies.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:58 PM ^
Rusillo should stick to the NBA and leave college football alone.
He does a podcast for a reason.
January 11th, 2023 at 9:01 PM ^
OSU fans believe their game with Georgia was THE national championship game, which is cool because it means the loss eats way at them that much more. It also does not change the fact that they loss to Michigan two straight years.
January 11th, 2023 at 7:59 PM ^
Anyone who watched TCU vs Michigan from an outsider perspective with no biases would easily be able to understand how many times Michigan shot themselves in the foot. Gave away literally 14 points with 2 pick sixes the other way and TCU's turnovers didn't result in the same free points the other way. Huge momentum swings. A blown no-call TD that lead to a fumble the other way. Another huge momentum swing that was determined by the refs. There were so many points left on the field for Michigan and the refs didn't help our cause AT ALL.
As for OSU vs Michigan, the 2nd half was just more of the same in terms of what we did against 85% of the teams we played in the second half. The fact that OSU competed so well with Georgia goes to show what our team was capable of. We should have been playing Georgia. You can make the argument maybe we wouldn't have fared very well against Georgia but I'd be hard pressed to believe we wouldn't have given a better performance than TCU.
We laid an absolute egg against TCU and still should have won.
Yes, I'm still very salty about that playoff game but mostly because I feel bad for the team.
A real magical season that I didn't think would have ended the way it did.
January 11th, 2023 at 8:03 PM ^
No idea who this Ryen chick is but sounds like she has her own sports podcast. Seems rare. Good for her I guess.
