I imagine that most everyone here would have aspirations well beyond Wilson's production last season for anyone who would wear Anthony Carter's jersey (and yes, Braylon Edwards was great, but that's Anthony Carter's jersey he'll be wearing).

Still, Roman Wilson has been a very good player and his stats should be more impressive than what they were, given how often he was wide open and didn't get the ball (or the TD).  Here's to hoping he elevates his play this year to the level of his own aspirations, which will probably be high enough to make everyone here happy.

I would agree with you if the #1 jersey meant what it used to mean. Does it still mean that? I dunno. Sure Roman isn't even in the same breath as say Braylon, but it seems now the #1 just means "the number one receiver on our team" and not "godlike creature who can catch any ball and will be in New York at the end of the season." At the end of the day, if having #1 on your chest motivates you to be great, wear the shit out of it.

At the end of the day, it’s just a number. I get we coincidentally had a couple greats wear #1 and tried to make it a “thing” but Braylon and AC would have been equally great if they wore #88 and #80 instead of #1.

It is somewhat strange that we’ve decided that players have to live up to a certain standard before they’re allowed to wear a certain number. Wilson isn’t trying to be Braylon and Braylon wasn’t trying to be AC. Let the players carve out their own legacy and wear whatever number they want in doing so.

I am agnostic about preserving these traditions, like Devin Gardner wearing Tom Harmon's #98, but these traditions are in place.  Or at least they were  -- probably not as important to Harbaugh, since he's given this jersey to at least a couple of different receivers during his tenure.

It must mean something to Roman Wilson or he wouldn't have made the switch. We'll probably read something him in the next few days.

Right but that was a random tradition Dave Brandon/Brady Hoke put in place for retired jerseys. It wasn’t organic and the #1 jersey wasn’t even part of that. #1 was not retired or part of the legends program. We just happened to have a few greats wear the number and decided somewhere along the line that only great WRs should wear it.

If the number means something to the player, that’s cool. Even if it happens to be a homage to players like AC. But it’s weird for us as fans (or the program) to require certain criteria for a player to have a certain number. Just my two cents.

The #1 jersey isn't really a *thing* anymore...Andrel Anthony was given it as a freshman, we have had multiple non-WRs and defensive players wear it in recent years and IIRC the whole "only for an elite game-breaking WR" thing was only while Braylon was actively endowing a scholarship for that player, which I believe he hasn't done in years.

A deserving honor. I still think they should retire that number in honor of Anthony Carter, but it's a great legacy number.

My favorite players to wear the No. 1:

1. Anthony Carter

2. Braylon Edwards

3. David Terrell

4. Greg McMurtry

5. Devin Funchess

Harry Kipke also wore the No. 1, but he was just a couple years before my time.

Seriously.  They need to throw him the damn ball if they are going to give him the #1 jersey.  It's an insult to AC, Braylon, etc. if they just hand it out and don't throw the dude some TD bombs.  I think Roman Wilson has the talent and could be deserving, but Harbaugh better be planning big things for him.

It looks like they decided on which defensive player would wear 1 as well. Both Walker and McBurrows were wearing it, but McBurrows is now listed as #18.
