Roman Wilson Switches to #1 Jersey

GIF replies are usually dumb but for some reason this one kills me every time. Second-best GIF ever, after the Raptors mascot on roller skates.

GIFs are always dumb. The format doesn't support sound.

Whoever downvoted this should feel bad.

It's like a shibboleth for dad joke aficionados.

How do you know when a joke is a dad joke?

When it becomes a parent.

a lot of people are GIFs apparently

I think they don't appreciate the un-PC terminology. As I understand it, the preferred term is "mute" now.
August 25th, 2023 at 3:58 PM ^
Well, then it would be a VIF
August 25th, 2023 at 4:18 PM ^
That GIF gives off some serious Brady Hoke vibes.
August 25th, 2023 at 2:19 PM ^
He deserves it. I predict big things for him this season.
August 25th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
Same here. He's one of my favorite players on the team.
JJ's confidence in his deep ball accuracy has been growing since the OSU game. He's gonna take a lot more deep shots this year and Roman's gonna be wide open often.
August 25th, 2023 at 3:21 PM ^
And he is going to be open underneath a lot because of those deep shots.
He is a weapon.
August 25th, 2023 at 8:32 PM ^
I thought he was gonna break out big time last year. He was such a big play threat and didn’t get the ball in his hands enough
August 25th, 2023 at 2:21 PM ^
I like Roman a lot but I don't think he's really earned this. Then again, the #1's since Braylon have been nothing special really
August 25th, 2023 at 2:49 PM ^
Boo this man.... (*boo*) (and no... I was not saying "Boooo-urns"...)
August 25th, 2023 at 2:56 PM ^
I think Harbaugh is qualified to decide if Roman has earned the #1 or not.
August 25th, 2023 at 3:07 PM ^
Lots of negs doesn't change my mind. He played in 8 games against B1G opponents last year and had a total of 101 receiving yards. Some of that is on JJ, but still not #1 worthy to me.
August 25th, 2023 at 3:37 PM ^
I imagine that most everyone here would have aspirations well beyond Wilson's production last season for anyone who would wear Anthony Carter's jersey (and yes, Braylon Edwards was great, but that's Anthony Carter's jersey he'll be wearing).
Still, Roman Wilson has been a very good player and his stats should be more impressive than what they were, given how often he was wide open and didn't get the ball (or the TD). Here's to hoping he elevates his play this year to the level of his own aspirations, which will probably be high enough to make everyone here happy.
August 25th, 2023 at 4:25 PM ^
Roman Wilson is an upgrade from the last WR who wore #1 last year (Andrel Anthony).
August 25th, 2023 at 6:34 PM ^
This is true. I have no idea if you are old enough to have seen Anthony Carter play live. It felt as if he singlehandedly brought Michigan's passing attack out of the dark ages.
August 25th, 2023 at 4:47 PM ^
He played in 8 games against B1G opponents last year and had a total of 101 receiving yards.
But he also had five receptions for 104 yards and a TD (should have been 2 TDs) in the national semifinal.
August 25th, 2023 at 3:19 PM ^
I would agree with you if the #1 jersey meant what it used to mean. Does it still mean that? I dunno. Sure Roman isn't even in the same breath as say Braylon, but it seems now the #1 just means "the number one receiver on our team" and not "godlike creature who can catch any ball and will be in New York at the end of the season." At the end of the day, if having #1 on your chest motivates you to be great, wear the shit out of it.
August 25th, 2023 at 4:08 PM ^
At the end of the day, it’s just a number. I get we coincidentally had a couple greats wear #1 and tried to make it a “thing” but Braylon and AC would have been equally great if they wore #88 and #80 instead of #1.
It is somewhat strange that we’ve decided that players have to live up to a certain standard before they’re allowed to wear a certain number. Wilson isn’t trying to be Braylon and Braylon wasn’t trying to be AC. Let the players carve out their own legacy and wear whatever number they want in doing so.
August 25th, 2023 at 4:25 PM ^
no we should only award #1 posthumously

If having been known to perform two miracles
August 25th, 2023 at 6:42 PM ^
I am agnostic about preserving these traditions, like Devin Gardner wearing Tom Harmon's #98, but these traditions are in place. Or at least they were -- probably not as important to Harbaugh, since he's given this jersey to at least a couple of different receivers during his tenure.
It must mean something to Roman Wilson or he wouldn't have made the switch. We'll probably read something him in the next few days.
August 26th, 2023 at 10:33 AM ^
Right but that was a random tradition Dave Brandon/Brady Hoke put in place for retired jerseys. It wasn’t organic and the #1 jersey wasn’t even part of that. #1 was not retired or part of the legends program. We just happened to have a few greats wear the number and decided somewhere along the line that only great WRs should wear it.
If the number means something to the player, that’s cool. Even if it happens to be a homage to players like AC. But it’s weird for us as fans (or the program) to require certain criteria for a player to have a certain number. Just my two cents.
August 25th, 2023 at 4:23 PM ^
It’s not really his fault we don’t throw the ball. If you prorate his numbers…
August 25th, 2023 at 5:18 PM ^
This is the year that Roman lives up to his promise and cures my ED.
August 26th, 2023 at 3:59 PM ^
The #1 jersey isn't really a *thing* anymore...Andrel Anthony was given it as a freshman, we have had multiple non-WRs and defensive players wear it in recent years and IIRC the whole "only for an elite game-breaking WR" thing was only while Braylon was actively endowing a scholarship for that player, which I believe he hasn't done in years.
August 25th, 2023 at 2:22 PM ^
A deserving honor. I still think they should retire that number in honor of Anthony Carter, but it's a great legacy number.
My favorite players to wear the No. 1:
1. Anthony Carter
2. Braylon Edwards
3. David Terrell
4. Greg McMurtry
5. Devin Funchess
Harry Kipke also wore the No. 1, but he was just a couple years before my time.
August 25th, 2023 at 2:58 PM ^
You forgot Derrick Alexander... Great before he blew out his knee vs Boston College. Very good after he came back from injury.
August 25th, 2023 at 3:42 PM ^
He also forgot JT Floyd
August 25th, 2023 at 3:16 PM ^
August 25th, 2023 at 3:51 PM ^
I do believe it’s a thing for a hungry and upperclassmen WR with big aspirations to take on the number though
August 25th, 2023 at 9:18 PM ^
You forgot Derrick Alexander who low key may have been better than Terrell.
August 25th, 2023 at 2:24 PM ^
Here's hoping that's a sign of things to come!
August 25th, 2023 at 2:32 PM ^
Seriously. They need to throw him the damn ball if they are going to give him the #1 jersey. It's an insult to AC, Braylon, etc. if they just hand it out and don't throw the dude some TD bombs. I think Roman Wilson has the talent and could be deserving, but Harbaugh better be planning big things for him.
August 25th, 2023 at 4:43 PM ^
I've always been a big fan of Roman. He has the potential to step up his play but JJ needs to throw the ball to him. Hopefully, he and JJ made some magic connection this summer and fall camp. Can't wait to see an improved Roman Wilson and JJ McCarthy this season.
August 26th, 2023 at 7:53 AM ^
No shade because results were there, but I watched a few games from the 2021 season and it’s crazy how many wide open guys Cade had deep only to dump it off for 6 yards underneath. Really earned the checkdown Cade moniker.
August 25th, 2023 at 2:32 PM ^
It looks like they decided on which defensive player would wear 1 as well. Both Walker and McBurrows were wearing it, but McBurrows is now listed as #18.
August 25th, 2023 at 3:00 PM ^
That's disappointing for McBurrows. If he can't beat out a kid who's been (allegedly) hurt that does not seem to bode well for him.
