Roll Call - UM fans attending/staying home & reasons

Submitted by 907_UM Nanook on January 6th, 2024 at 3:08 PM

We need the best fan juju attending the game in Houston, and fans who seem to only attend games when the team loses - take one for the team & stay home, buy a bigger flat screen.

I personally fall into the latter category, having traveled from Alaska to watch Michigan/OSU losses between '17 - '19 & the Bball Natty in San Antonio in '18.

Please, for the team, look yourself in the mirror & be honest with yourself today. We only need the best fan juju in Houston, there's still time to sell your game tix to "winners".

Love the superstitious outlook.  I'm watching at home on my good luck TV with my good luck clothes.

I was watching the Rose Bowl with my mom at her house.  I bought a new TV for the game because besides being too small her TV was bad luck.  Saw the Georgia loss there.

As far as showing up in person for bowl games I am only 3-5.  I'm 0-5 in South Bend so I probably shouldn't go there anymore.

Watching from home.

Reasons:

1. Spent a billion dollars to attend Rose Bowl

2. I want to experience watching the game with my kids

3. As much as I would love to see Michigan win the National Championship in person, the Pasadena experience was the real bucket list item for me. Watching a prime time game in a fully commercialized NFL stadium pales in comparison to the tradition of the Rose Bowl

Same here.  The Rose Bowl was a great trip for me and my wife.  We went for a week, including seeing two national parks, staying with a college friend, and doing some birdwatching around northern San Diego.  I'm now 2-1 watching Michigan Rose Bowl wins, so at least I have a winning record now.  You just can't beat the atmosphere of that game and the beautiful setting.

I've often wondered what life would be like if I were able to share in the superstitions of others, but I fear that it would be a far worse, more fearful life than the one I lead. I know many who have game-related rituals, but beyond wearing Michigan apparel, I do little else aside from show up.

That said, I have a winning record overall in my attendance of Michigan games, but alas, I cannot justify spending the sort of money it requires to get to Houston for that particular event when we are in the midst of various home renovations.

I’ll be watching from home. I’ve attended none of the Ohio State wins the last 3 years or the Rose bowl. I’ll do my part by not attending.

i did go to Indy but they were more like scrimmages.

I also work in finance and I have a meeting with the CFO on Tuesday that would be career limiting if I skipped.

My kids are current students at Michigan.  I will drop them off for the winter semester tomorrow (Sunday).

They went to the Rose Bowl and will be “out and about” in Ann Arbor - watching / enjoying the game at a fine campus haunt.  I’ll join them & their friends and plan to pick up the tab.

As for superstitious stuff - I’ve worn my maize 1/4 zip Nike Jumpman pullover for every game this season.  I’ll wear it on Monday evening too.

Already took two trips this year to see the team play (Minnesota and B1GCG). So I’m past my allotment for spending money on football (I also have Lion's season tickets). M is 9-0 when my wife and I are in attendance though (knock on wood). So I will be watching it at my neighbors where I watched the Bama game. Also I like having replays in big games.

I did not attend the Rose Bowl, the last one I attended with the magical game on Jan 1, 1998. A perfect ending to a perfect season.

I am currently on a plane headed to Houston however and will be in attendance.

I've been to Frozen Four winners (Cincy in 1998) and losers (UMD with Tiny Jesus), Final Four games in New Orleans that apparently never happened a Remy Hamilton game winner in South Bend, and I'm 1-1--1 in Columbus.

But yes, I brought the original UTL sweatshirt I've been wearing for big games.

Looking forward to this one.

This has some similarities to my experience.  I attended the Jan 1, 1998 Rose Bowl as a student, so I didn’t try to attend since travel costs would be a lot more than to get to Houston if we made it. Flights were a lot more around New Year’s than a week later.  I had never been to Houston either, so that had an added draw of being able to add on some tourist things as well.  The space center was fun today (but didn’t try alumni event there), and I look forward to the Pep rally tomorrow.

A coworker who was a Notre Dame alum had reserved a tour to attend the championship game if they made it some years back with the explanation that she wasn’t sure when they might be in that position again.  That didn’t work out for her, but it did start me thinking about trying to attend in person if we got that chance.

I am superstitious enough that I will wear the Team 144 shirt that I snagged at the Tshirt toss during the season opener, and which I have worn during every subsequent game so far this season (including sleeping in it during a night game while I was traveling in Europe.). This is probably more for me to say I wore it during all the games than really thinking it will affect the outcome, but I did make sure to pack it.

Can't go. Have to stay home or at relatives where I can frantically leave the room during crucial moments and ensure victory. Works like a charm. No thanks necessary.

With such paltry ticket prices I and my entourage would have been on the 50 otherwise. BET!

My first game as a season ticket holder was App State, behind the field goal post. I was at the Toledo loss, the Trouble with the Snap loss, and multiple MSU & OSU losses.

These days I stay away from the stadium.

I've been a Michigan fan since I was old enough to know what football was, But I have a hundred other things in my life that the few thousand dollars for nosebleed tickets alone could go towards instead.

I’ll be watching at a local theater, most likely surrounded by UW fans. I would love to see the game in person but there’s no way I could afford that.

Not attending: too far to travel for a game best viewed on a comfy couch with snacks on demand, private bathroom with no waiting lines, and a superb ability to a) fast forward through commercials, half time, and b) mute talking heads. My presence at or absence from the game imparts no benefit(s) or issue(s) whatsoever.

My thinking? We got this.

Mulled it over until yesterday afternoon and decided to stay at home.

The combination of price and pain in the ass getting there was just slightly too much for the juice to be worth the squeeze.

Have safe fun everybody traveling and go blue!

Going with my son (flights willing).

In favor of us going

Me

-Student from 91-95 (2-1-1 vs OSU and ND, 1-1 vs UW in the Rose Bowl)

-7-1 in games attended since (1-1 bowl games, 2004 Rose and 2011 Sugar)

Son

-He started following UMfb in 2021, and is 2-0 in person

In favor of us not going

-Have not yet been cured of BPONE (in remission, but still in window for recurrence)

-TCU did not baptize him with UM fandom and I'm worried he's due

Games I’ve attended…

1997 OSU

2016 Citrus bowl

2021 OSU

2023 Penn State

I’ve had great luck at games. I have no ticket for Monday night, but if anyone wants to give me one for free and it’s a good seat, I will take one for the team and buy a plane ticket to the game.

I lived in San Diego (from 2008-2020 and was beyond bummed to not go to Rosebowl. Lived there 13 years and we didn’t even sniff it.

Watching from home.  Would have been awesome to do the Rose Bowl thing, but was there for the tour in '97 and the win on Jan 1 so kinda checked that box.

Wanted to do the NCG but just missed the cut for the MI tix and the price didn't come down enough while was in SanAn to warrant changing flights to stay for it.  May wind up wishing I'd just choked down the higher price tag but couldn't pull the trigger.

My partner will be at the game with the band--I'm holding down the fort here.

I will be in the black t-shirt and running shorts that have worked for the B1G championship and Alabama game.  That feels like the right gear for this win.

As a human, it is important for me to feel like I can influence events over which I objectively have no control.  Just because I'm a professor doesn't mean I can't be a mindless fan too.  :)

Staying home, unfortunately.

Was presented the opportunity to go, but I passed. We had to pay for a new furnace due to the old one breaking down right before Thanksgiving. Right after that, we had to install a new faucet for a kitchen sink, and then we’re about to start redoing our deck in a month or so after getting our insurance claim payout (tree fell on our deck during a monsoon and absolutely destroyed it), but we know we’re going to have to come out of pocket to do what we want to do instead of just rebuilding it back to the way it was.

So basically, it’s been a really freaking expensive last few months, and shelling out another few grand to go to this game just isn’t in the cards.

I have determined that I have watched all but one half of football in the last two years outdoors.   Either at the game or on my porch TV.    That half was TCU at an alum watch party and we realized as the half closed the last watch party we attended was 21 MSU so we politely excused ourselves and went home.

Went to Pasadena but NRG is indoors so will be watching on the porch no matter the weather.   Not to mention I also spent a billion dollars on the Rose Bowl.

And I’m not really superstitious but at this point why take chances.

This hits home for me...still mulling it over. I can swing the $4k (no humble brag), can always be spent on other things - but this experience doesn't come around often.

That being said, the flight from Chicago, being by myself, 2 kiddos at home (1 and 3, but have wife's blessing), logistics, lines, worse viewing experience. Potential for delays with weather.

Contrasted with electric atmosphere, 2.5 decades in the making, and some awesome eating...could out fly Sunday or Monday. It's really a 50/50.

I may try envisioning the whole thing, good and bad. I'm on the razor's edge!

I am watching from home for the best of reasons. In October 1995 I started an unbroken streak when Northwestern upset us on their way to the Rose Bowl. Since then it has been my misfortune to witness in person loss after loss, pretty much one each year for a decade or until I decided to stop jinxing the team and stop putting my butt in the bleachers. (You can't blame me for Rich Rod; he did that on his own!) Nearly 30 years without seeing a win in person!

But I am watching from home, and that in itself has a story. In '97, not only did I not attended any regular season games, I didn't watch any on TV live either. Work got in the way every Saturday and I only listened on the radio and/or followed the game summary on the interwebs. I was torn about watching the Rose Bowl given "respect the streak", but I watched, fingers crossed. We won, and I haven't been superstitious about watching since.
