Wow, kid kinda looks like Grandpa. Niiiice! Thanks for the info!

We'll all have how he complemented Coach Harbaugh on the O-line, 'as good a performance as he's ever seen', after the beating the Buckeyes
December 28th, 2021 at 7:20 PM ^
Interesting that he and George Foreman probably made more money on consumer product NIL money than during their actual career.
December 29th, 2021 at 4:50 PM ^
Those are two of the names that stick out, but they're far from alone. Michael Jordan (his branding is so widespread his logo is on our football jerseys), Tiger Woods, etc., have made far more from endorsements too...
December 28th, 2021 at 7:20 PM ^
God Bless, Coach! Transcended 3 generations of football! Boom!
December 28th, 2021 at 7:21 PM ^
Thoughts and condolences to his family. A heck of a contribution to football in his career. RIP Mr. Madden.
December 28th, 2021 at 7:21 PM ^
Just saw the blurb while watching the bowl game.
RIP Mr. Madden, you'll be missed.
I recorded the doc on fox but haven't watched it yet, will watch with a different mindset now.

The fox doc was great. RIP and condolences to the family.

Apparently he was an avid trout fisherman. I knew the realtor (he's gone too) who sold him his cabin near Grayling, MI on the Au Sable River, who said he was a really nice guy and maintained a friendship after the sale. He said he would drive there in his RV.

That’s amazing! I’ll think of him the next time I’m on the Holy Waters
December 28th, 2021 at 10:05 PM ^
You'll love it. It was wonderful. Although you could definitely tell his voice was getting weak in his advancing age.

Whoa Nellie!

Pssst... That's a Keith Jackson line...

DOINK!!!
December 28th, 2021 at 7:23 PM ^
His career was getting some attention lately, can't remember why, but very sad. A legend. RIP, Coach.
December 28th, 2021 at 7:23 PM ^
At least he got to see a dominant OL performance one last time. RIP Coach.
December 28th, 2021 at 7:34 PM ^
Really cool for those Michigan coaches and O line guys to have that accolade from him right near the end of his life.
December 28th, 2021 at 7:24 PM ^
Legend of a man, commentator, and coach. Sheronne Moore better save that text forever (I was honestly sort of surprised to hear anything out of Madden with his age, I’m glad some of his final moments of his words being spread on a national stage were high praises of Michigan, Harbaugh and the Oline).
I’ve missed his legendary booms, mindless and awesome rants, and of course his timeless schematic screen drawings overtop of replay.
Let’s all eat some Turducken sometime this week in honor of the Legend

One of the ultimate figure heads in football. I’ll drink a few for you tonight, Madden, and may even play some Madden on the PS5 tonight. God bless and guide you, sir!
December 28th, 2021 at 7:25 PM ^
Growing up, John Madden was one of the first people in sports in general by whom I was transfixed. I would listen intently to his explanations / teaching during games and I would get a little excited when he would make use of the telestrator. It is, in part, how I first became familiar with basic strategy for football.
Very sad news actually.

RIP to one of the best coaches in NFL history
December 28th, 2021 at 7:26 PM ^
Really sad to hear this news...
Stands out a little more since he took the time to congratulate Coach Harbaugh and compliment the OLine following the OSU game.
Condolences to his family and friends.

John Madden & Keith Jackson... they were the voices of football at their respective levels. No flash, just substance and character. RIP & condolences to the family.
December 28th, 2021 at 8:01 PM ^
Wait - what happened to Keith Jackson?
December 28th, 2021 at 7:28 PM ^
An absolute Legend
December 28th, 2021 at 7:30 PM ^
It's been a LONG LONG LONG time since I've heard Madden call a game (I also don't play video games), but I can still hear and see his voice as I type this.
Legend.
RIP. Thanks for the memories.
Edit: I'm young enough (40?!) to only remember him in the booth.
Edit #2: I just realized he retired as a coach at the age of 42.... Puts "Life" into perspective if you look at my first edit.
Condolences to his family and friends
December 28th, 2021 at 8:36 PM ^
Madden was mighty young to retire, but the stress ate him up (ulcers and burnout). I imagine a big part of it was his fear of flying which got worse as he got older. The NFL is no place for a head coach who doesn't fly. Thank you (and Pat) for the many wonderful broadcasts, Coach. RIP.
December 28th, 2021 at 11:38 PM ^
Not a big deal if NFL coaches don't fly. They can always drive home the next day. After a pit stop in (Cayman) Nebraska. #Urban'd
December 28th, 2021 at 7:31 PM ^
Simply the best color analyst in the history of sports.
After being one of the top five coaches in NFL history.
RIP, Big John.
For several generations, he WAS the NFL.
December 28th, 2021 at 7:34 PM ^
A legend. Won a Super Bowl as a coach, perhaps the greatest color commentator ever, and revolutionized sports video games, remaining attached to the biggest American franchise to this day.
Quite a portfolio.
December 28th, 2021 at 7:35 PM ^
This is sad news. His love of football was infectious. Thinking of him calling a game makes me smile. I'm sorry that he's gone but happy that he lived a long life.
A further thought: his boundless affection for the game combined with his appreciation for the absurdities of it (he wrote a book about football called One Knee Equals Two Feet) made him a singular figure. There was sometimes a twinkle in his eye that seemed to say, "Can you believe we get to do this for a living?"
December 28th, 2021 at 7:40 PM ^
RIP. Your memory will forever be a blessing for so many people.
Everyone should watch Frank Caliendo as John Madden on David Letterman for a good laugh tonight

RIP Coach. The world is a darker place without you.

I became a John Madden/Oakland Raiders fan back in my high school and college years when I needed some relief from the everlasting frustration of being a Loins fan, and Madden and his crazy wild Raiders provided that entertainment for me.
Here's a revealing description Madden gave of himself many moons ago while coaching the Raiders:
"Coaching isn’t work. It’s more than a job. It’s a way of life…no one should go into coaching unless he couldn’t live without it…Football is what I am. I didn’t go into it to make a living or because I enjoyed it. There is much more to it than just enjoying it. I am totally consumed by football, totally involved. I’m not into gardening…or any other hobbies. I don’t fish or hunt. I’m in football.”
RIP to a true giant of the coaching profession.

RIP Coach Madden ?
One of the greatest of all time coaches turned announcers.
Loved watching his Raiders play back in the day, especially against the Steelers.
