Just saw the blurb while watching the bowl game.

RIP Mr. Madden, you'll be missed.

I recorded the doc on fox but haven't watched it yet, will watch with a different mindset now.

Legend of a man, commentator, and coach. Sheronne Moore better save that text forever (I was honestly sort of surprised to hear anything out of Madden with his age, I’m glad some of his final moments of his words being spread on a national stage were high praises of Michigan, Harbaugh and the Oline).

I’ve missed his legendary booms, mindless and awesome rants, and of course his timeless schematic screen drawings overtop of replay.

Let’s all eat some Turducken sometime this week in honor of the Legend

Growing up, John Madden was one of the first people in sports in general by whom I was transfixed. I would listen intently to his explanations / teaching during games and I would get a little excited when he would make use of the telestrator. It is, in part, how I first became familiar with basic strategy for football.

Very sad news actually.

Really sad to hear this news...

Stands out a little more since he took the time to congratulate Coach Harbaugh and compliment the OLine following the OSU game.

Condolences to his family and friends.

It's been a LONG LONG LONG time since I've heard Madden call a game (I also don't play video games), but I can still hear and see his voice as I type this.

Legend.

RIP. Thanks for the memories.

Edit: I'm young enough (40?!) to only remember him in the booth.

Edit #2: I just realized he retired as a coach at the age of 42.... Puts "Life" into perspective if you look at my first edit.

Condolences to his family and friends

Madden was mighty young to retire, but the stress ate him up (ulcers and burnout).  I imagine a big part of it was his fear of flying which got worse as he got older.  The NFL is no place for a head coach who doesn't fly.  Thank you (and Pat) for the many wonderful broadcasts, Coach. RIP.

A legend. Won a Super Bowl as a coach, perhaps the greatest color commentator ever, and revolutionized sports video games, remaining attached to the biggest American franchise to this day.

Quite a portfolio.

This is sad news. His love of football was infectious. Thinking of him calling a game makes me smile. I'm sorry that he's gone but happy that he lived a long life.

A further thought: his boundless affection for the game combined with his appreciation for the absurdities of it (he wrote a book about football called One Knee Equals Two Feet) made him a singular figure. There was sometimes a twinkle in his eye that seemed to say, "Can you believe we get to do this for a living?"

RIP.  Your memory will forever be a blessing for so many people.

Everyone should watch Frank Caliendo as John Madden on David Letterman for a good laugh tonight

I became a John Madden/Oakland Raiders fan back in my high school and college years when I needed some relief from the everlasting frustration of being a Loins fan, and Madden and his crazy wild Raiders provided that entertainment for me.

Here's a revealing description Madden gave of himself many moons ago while coaching the Raiders:

"Coaching isn’t work. It’s more than a job. It’s a way of life…no one should go into coaching unless he couldn’t live without it…Football is what I am. I didn’t go into it to make a living or because I enjoyed it. There is much more to it than just enjoying it. I am totally consumed by football, totally involved. I’m not into gardening…or any other hobbies. I don’t fish or hunt. I’m in football.”

RIP to a true giant of the coaching profession.
