Reading Harbaugh Tea Leaves: Todd Anson Edition
It seems as though Harbaugh's good pal Todd Anson believes all of Harbaugh's antics are related to his UM contract negotiation. This is one tweet, but there are more like this from his Twitter from yesterday.

I'll take it. Bend Warde over and get that deal, Jimbo.

Yeah, let's get him back for all those year he was a little hard on the Beaver

I am impossible to offend but have to question the necessity of this.

I believe 10-years, $125 million would make Jim the highest paid in college (at least until Kirby’s next extension). Essentially a few more than Jim’s paid now. Totally worth it because winning at this level in the north is so much harder. Even mediocre coaches in the south can stumble into national titles ex. Miles and Orgeron. Jim is worth his weight in gold.
January 9th, 2023 at 6:46 PM ^
Recent gold price is $22,372 per pound. To ensure we miss on the high side, lets assume a weight of 225 pounds, which would yield just over $5 million.
So I think it is safe to say Jim is worth more than double his weight in gold, per year (!!!)

Guy can't expect to live on 10M. Pay the man.
January 9th, 2023 at 1:31 PM ^
Have you been to the grocery store lately? The guy needs to feed his family. This is not just about what he’s worth, the guy is near the welfare line on only the lowest possible annual 8-figure salary.
January 9th, 2023 at 1:32 PM ^
he has almost as many kids as Nick Cannon to feed!
January 9th, 2023 at 2:19 PM ^
It’s a banana, how much could it cost, $20?
January 9th, 2023 at 1:38 PM ^
Harbaugh makes a lot of money, but he spends a lot of money.

January 9th, 2023 at 1:29 PM ^
if you're Warde, how do you not just back up the dump truck of cash? the man is delivering. You saved money the last couple years with his contract. Now it's time. I don't understand why there needs to be any kind of posturing with the relationship they supposedly have.
January 9th, 2023 at 1:42 PM ^
What if he's already done that and it isn't about the money for Harbaugh? What if Harbaugh really wants to be in the NFL?
January 9th, 2023 at 1:47 PM ^
who invented liquid soap and why?
January 9th, 2023 at 2:12 PM ^
Exactly. If this were about working out a deal, we would hear about it. Info would be coming from the AD and potentially others. It would benefit them to do this so recruits and current players feel more confident that he’ll be here and it would indicate to NFL teams that he’s no longer on the market. It’s quite clear that JH doesn’t want to be locked up by M until he has exhausted his NFL options. (See example from 1 year ago)
January 9th, 2023 at 2:31 PM ^
What if Harbaugh wants Warde out? Warde is the jackass that screwed him after 2020. And didn't fix the situation after 2021.
Maybe Harbaugh knows what we have all known for a while... Warde needs to go.
January 9th, 2023 at 2:43 PM ^
And didn't fix the situation after 2021.
Harbaugh signed a new contract in 2/2022. Yup, I’m sure Harbaugh wants Warde out too. Harbaugh is thinking, “I really want to stay and not tank this recruiting class but let’s fire the AD and conduct a search for a new one before I sign anything. That’s a good idea.” Try and keep up even though I’m sure uninformed posting is really fun.
January 9th, 2023 at 2:13 PM ^
guessing he's already done this, and harbaugh is either negotiating or truly is waiting on nfl offers.
other possibility is warde is still getting boosters in line to pay up
January 9th, 2023 at 2:45 PM ^
Dude Harbaugh made 10 fucking million this past year.
That’s right up there with Saban and co
January 9th, 2023 at 1:31 PM ^
Love to negotiate in a way that torpedos my own recruiting efforts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
January 9th, 2023 at 1:33 PM ^
Yea this doesn't make a ton of sense if this is all just a negotiating ploy. Also, that narrative doesn't fit what others have said that Harbaugh is not that motivated by money. I think the NFL interest is very real and the Jim is gone if he finds the right fit.
January 9th, 2023 at 1:51 PM ^
He doesn’t have to be motivated by money to expect more. It could be principle. He knows he’s worth 9M/yr or more. He may view his salary as a signal of how much they want him or what they think of him. The salary sends a signal as to how valuable they think you are. If that doesn’t match with what he thinks he brings to the table, then he could walk, and it doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that he wants the money itself.
January 9th, 2023 at 1:42 PM ^
That is the most mysterious thing to me. A couple of things have to be true of all this...
1.) Jim must realize the impact that yearly NFL flirtation/rumors might have on recruiting.
2.) Warde must realize that Jim is delivering as head coach.
None of this has to be navigated in the public sphere, Jim's agent just calls Warde and says, "Hey, Jim is killing it, in light of his previous concessions, we'd like to revisit his current contract to better align it with his results and coaching tier". Bingo-bango, make it happen gents (in a way that doesn't torpedo momentum from back-to-back college football playoffs).
January 9th, 2023 at 1:49 PM ^
They had last off season and all this year to sign Harbaugh to a contract that could’ve taken care of this.
January 9th, 2023 at 1:53 PM ^
Harbaugh signed a new contract last off-season. He could have made clear what was necessary to avoid another dalliance with the NFL. Instead, he signed the deal and said it was a one-time thing.
January 9th, 2023 at 2:33 PM ^
It's very possible he's made recruits aware of what he's doing. Last year he was open about exploring the NFL with recruits and it's possible this year he's told recruits this is all just for contract leverage. Top RB target Jordan Marshall is visiting next weekend which would seem odd if he didn't already know what Harbaugh is doing
January 9th, 2023 at 1:33 PM ^
I really wish Warde would be the one to find a new place of employment.
January 9th, 2023 at 1:50 PM ^
Kevin Warren to Chicago Bears
Warde to B1G Commish after he signs Jim to what he is worth to the UofM - I mean how much does any extra $5MM-$10MM annually really move the needle on the amount of cash the money cannon is about to start shooting at the B1G? Retire here with your parents next door and kids raised in the wholesome wackiness that is Ann Arbor.
Let the AD debate begin. Michigan Men and Women all over the sports world in various roles that could be lured home
January 9th, 2023 at 2:18 PM ^
I like this option over firing Warde. Although, I would take firing him if this isn't workable.
January 9th, 2023 at 2:36 PM ^
Lloyd Carr is coming out of retirement to be the AD. He was the assistant AD once, now it's his time to shine.
January 9th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
It's getting frustrating. He's slow on the draw on basically everything
January 9th, 2023 at 1:35 PM ^
A week ago Anson denied the reports that Harbaugh had NFL interest. Now he singing a slightly different tune.
But I do tend to agree with his take on Warde Manuel. Warde is reactionary not proactive. He has no apparent fire in his belly. This is especially true as it relates to NIL.
January 9th, 2023 at 2:01 PM ^
I didn't know who Anson was before last week, but his performance as an insider strikes me more as TMZ than Bob Woodward.
January 9th, 2023 at 2:15 PM ^
Definitely. Anson seems like he enjoys the clicks more than anything. If he was really Harbaugh’s friend, he’d be keeping his mouth shut like all of his actual friends. This guy knows nothing.
January 9th, 2023 at 3:03 PM ^
If he's truly a friend of Harbaugh, wouldn't Harbaugh tell him to STFU on Twitter? Does Harbaugh need his help? He has an agent now. Seems like a lot of game playing to me, if this guy really does know what's going on.
January 9th, 2023 at 1:38 PM ^
If Jim leaves I think he looks bad in court of public opinion per what his words have been to this point. I do not believe that is who Jim is at all. I think he is mostly upfront, honest (except for burgers) and tried to do what he believes is best for himself and Michigan. Wouldn't blame him at all for leaving if his goal is win a Super Bowl but if that was likely I do not think he makes the statements he has up to this point. From my view his agent is working to get the deal Jim deserves and I even bet a dollar that makes Jim uncomfortable doing this.... That seems to be who Jim is to me....
