I'm trying to figure this out myself. Is Jim a man of his word, but UM is taking advantage of that by not giving him what he deserves? That would make me change my approach as well. There's also the other side that is him in his mind trying to scratch that itch just ONE more time and never again, but good luck convincing recruits of that in the future.
He hasn't thought this all the way through; really wants to get in the NFL and is willing to sacrifice UM a bit for it; or this is a big ploy to get a massive contract. Or some combination thereof.
What's clear is that this will impact Michigan football for the next 5 years no matter what and after getting Michigan into the elite status, he's put us back into 2nd tier status again no matter what the outcome of his decision is.
I don't remember the timeout situation, but the theory is, if they're 2 yards from scoring, your biggest enemy isn't the score, but the clock. Say you stop them twice (Michigan would have been fine with this) but the clock still runs or you have to use up valuable timeouts. They're likely to score anyhow, so would you rather they score with 2 minutes left or with 30 seconds left? You have better odds of scoring twice with more time on the clock.
I sometimes wonder if Harbaugh was thinking along these lines a few years ago when he brought Gattis on. This is not saying he did or that I believe it. I just wonder if he came here with the idea that he would want to go back to the NFL once he righted the ship. ?♂️
OR, Elston knows that IF Harbaugh leaves there’s a contingency plan in place and he’s comfortable enough with that contingency that he still wants to coach at his alma mater no matter which way Harbaugh goes. ?♂️?♂️

It’s also easier to do when you played 4-6 snaps the night before rather than playing 40-60. It’s not to say that it’s easy in general, but there’s a reason THESE guys were able to practice rather than, say, Haskins, Corum and Johnson. I play semi-pro football in the summers on both sides of the ball and believe me when I say that my Sundays are spent doing one thing: nothing. ?
Your comment would be accurate except for Harbaugh’s pro-style offense looked similarly lost, confused and slow when he was running it. No other team I know runs 30 seconds off the play clock when they are down 10 with 7:00 left in the game. It’s not a switch in the offensive philosophy that’s the problem. It’s the way Harbaugh coaches, gameplans and “Adjusts.”
I don't think Fleck would fit here, culturally. I'd love to just promote Gattis. Seems like Harbaugh is the one with the issues and it looked like his old offense yesterday. Give the keys to Gattis and let him hire his people. I don't think there's any other way you'd keep from having a drop off in recruiting.
This is the way it should work in my opinion. South Dakota should handle things much differently than say, California, Due to population densities, etc. Wayne County is different than Charlevoix County, etc. Local governments ought to be more empowered than distant governments.
Comparing this to drunk driving is a massive stretch. People that drive drunk are incapable of being in charge of their faculties and making well thought out decisions. Also, if I know that Main St. is a hot spot for drag racing, I am capable of making a wise decision to avoid going near that area when racing is common. In other words, if I want to play football this year, and understand that someone else might be stupid and pass on the virus on to me and know all the possibilities that come with, yet I'm still wanting to play football, why can't I make that decision for myself? Why do others get to think they know more and make a decision for me by telling me that I can't?
Just to be clear, you’re ok with making that decision for them? You are willing to tell them they can’t coach if they want to? You are telling them they can’t look at the data themselves and make a decision about their own life if they’re in a high risk group?
I'm surprised he didn't say that Biden might claim that his opponents want to put black people back in chains. I mean, that would be an over the top thing to say about a career politician.
