I'm not going to pretend to know what Jim Harbaugh is thinking and I don't believe anyone else knows shit.  He doesn't seem like the type of guy to discuss personal business with others. I'd love for him to stay, but can totally understand why the state of college football doesn't look too appealing anymore. The NFL offers an even playing field which the NCAA can never achieve. Stay or go, I'll always being thankful for his accomplishments as a player and coach.

If Warde really is the egotistical prick that some here believe, then I have no problem with JH playing this offer like he is. Ono's only been on the job 18 months or so. I remember good leaders telling me in a manufacturing environment about the importance of NOT making any major changes (policies, etc.) in the first 6 months. Get to know people and build trust. In even bigger jobs (VP of Global Mfg, etc.), a good leader takes a full year before making changes. I believe Ono had a lot of unplanned stuff fall in his lap that led him to have to focus on settling big issues - like the grad teacher strike, the on-going Israel-Palestine riff that's spread to many college campuses, etc - that his decision to remove Warde has been delayed.

The best time to sweep this guy out is mid-January, post playoffs. Again IF Warde is really the jerk some people claim him to be. That would settle JH's dilemma and get him to sign a record-setting deal. It would also allow a hire of a new AD by March, in time to make a decision on Howard.

If there's one thing bigger to JH than being loved, it's the revenge factor. He may get some more punishment by NCAA but I think B1G is done with him for now. Beating Ohio again is worth more than anything he could ever get in the NFL (a SB ready team is not awaiting him). Every time we beat one of the anointed teams, it pisses off not only our B1G rivals but also most of CFB.

One question I have is.. what does Jim really love doing?   I think one of those things is.. developing young men.  Turning adolescents into men who are great at their craft - and “whole” - prepared to contribute to their family, community, and society.

He can do a lot more of that in Ann Arbor than he can coaching games on Sundays.

Hey, I've got an idea: Let's go on MGoBlog and argue passionately about shit we know absolutely nothing about!

"If you insist."

"Of course I insist! Because, passion, man! So what if I have no real inside information and am just guessing - if sports was about sanity, guys wouldn't be offered nearly a billion dollars to play baseball!"

Dude, why is this happening?

You have your team playing the most important game of the year coming up, you have potential recruits and their families watching, and potential transfers looking at what is happening. Why would you continue to be a distraction (especially this year with all the drama)? This team deserves better. Every year it is something new.

If you want to coach here, than be the coach and if it is him causing all of this, knock it off.

What ever happened to be honorable, and fulfilling a contract that you agreed to sign?

this is an interesting rant, given there's no credible information in the public eye that indicates he's doing anything other than 'honorably fulfilling the contract he signed'.    He is not currently doing anything 'to be a distraction'.  that there is reporting about conversations that are alleged to be happening as part of a contract renewal negotiation doesn't mean the Coach is "being a distraction".

It's a great offer.Sign the damn contract or leave after the season. A yearly flirtation with the NFL is just F*ing obnoxious. End this crap one way or the other. I love JH and want him until he retires, but a yearly dance with the NFL hurts recruiting and just feeds the the media objective to weaken UM.

lol, he has a current contract this is just an extension. This sign now or leave outrage is ridiculous. It’s as if some of you have no idea how Harbaugh operates. He is a different kind of cat and will never just fall in line. He has said he wants to be at Michigan. How about we take him at his word.

If only Don Vito Corleone was available.   I wish the best for Jim - and would love to see him receive an offer he truly couldn’t refuse.

Hoping he’s Michigan’s head coach until.. he doesn’t want to coach any longer.

Assuming this report wasn't completely made up, one side or the other leaked it, and that's not good news either way.  For the moment at least, Harbaugh has apparently looked at two truly huge contract offers and hasn't decided to pull the trigger on either one.  When you consider the timing (huge games approaching, transfer portal season), that's a big deal.

I love the Harbaugh era.  Coach has delivered everything Michigan fans hoped he would, and the team culture he has built at Michigan should be the envy of all college teams anywhere.  Noooobody has it better than us.  That said, I wouldn't want the university to offer those dollars on a no-strings-attached basis.  If that's the stumbling block, or if Harbaugh truly can't get the NFL out of his system, then we live with the results.  By all accounts, Michigan has stepped up.

Frankly, I am tired of this annual “will he stay or go” dance.  Just get it done, or move on if you want an NFL job.  I would hate to se him go, but this annual issue is not helping.

My 2 cents: I think Jim wants to stay, but he needs to keep his NFL options open because he doesn't trust that Warde will have his back against the NCAA. Partridge was fired because Warde interpreted what he did to be a violation of the language in his contract. Until the language of the contract with regard to future action by the NCAA is crystal clear, Jim is not going to sign because he doesn't want Warde to "interpret" anything as grounds for his dismissal as he did with CP.

This indirectly highlights the importance of acknowledging that none of us know what language is in the contract that he's (allegedly) currently uncertain about.

Yes, the pending out come of the NCAA investigation into the scouting 'scandal' probably weighs heavily here, as it should.  On one hand, without knowing what allegations the NCAA is likely to issue, all the U/AD can do is guess at potential allegations and their accompanying penalties.  As someone mentioned earlier itt, if Harbaugh were to receive a show-cause from the NCAA, it would make zero sense for Michigan to be paying 8 figures to a guy who's not allowed to associate with the program.  In that sense, Michigan has to cover its ass.   On the other hand, Harbaugh has to balance Michigan's need with his own - he doesn't want to be able to be fired for any/every action taken by the NCAA, especially given that they can't bank on the NCAA acting in good faith, in which case his fate would be determined by M's ability to make its/his case in defense, and have the NCAA find it reasonable.

There are no easy solutions here, and there's even less certainty about the specifics of the language being negotiated in the contract renewal.

If I were one of the key decisionmakers on the M side, I'd be offering Harbaugh the 12.5/yr number, with the condition that any penalty from the NCAA that causes him to miss more than 8 games would be cause for termination.  Michigan might even be of the mind that they'd be willing to pay him for a full year of not coaching, were he to be suspended for a year.   But any action that impacts more than a full season has to be M's line in the sand, imo.

since it's tangentially related, I figured I'd ask this question itt instead of starting a new thread:

Does anyone know if a copy of the full-text NCAA bylaws is available for online viewing? I've been able to find the Football Rules manual, but not complete text of the NCAA Bylaws.

Thanks in advance.
