Rank your Fanhood.

Submitted by Smoothitron on

I thought it might be interesting to see how people weigh their loyalties to the various teams they follow.

If you want something a little more concrete, rank the teams you follow in order of how happy you would be if they won a championship.  I'm thinking specifically pro and college big 4 sports teams, but feel free to throw in national teams or non-revenue sports teams as well if that's your bag.

For me:

1.  Michigan Basketball

Spending the late 90s and early 00s as the only UM basketball fan in my school was tough, but that makes the current success that much better.

2a. Indiana Pacers

Indiana kid's gonna Indiana.  I spend about 5 minutes as part of my morning routine seething about the fact Reggie Miller(and Austin Croshere) never got a ring, but I have that slight disdain for pro sports holding be back from calling them #2 alone.

2b. Michigan Football

I had the great pleasure of getting into sports right after UM won the football title in 97, so I haven't gotten the good pleasure of enjoying a championship as it happened.

4. Indianapolis Colts

Of course the team I care least about is the only one that has won a championship while I've been following them.  All hail St. Peyton.  All hail St. Andrew.

5. Any team representing the USA in international competition.

U-S-A, U-S-A!!!

Share yours so that I know who to downvote reflexively if you like teams that I don't.

The Tigers' lack of popularity is interesting. If I were a baseball exec (or especially, owner) I'd be worried. I come from the late baby boomer era and my first ballgame was opening day, 1966, at Tiger Stadium. My dad, who at 92 is still the greatest dad in the world (sorry other dads; you'll just have to fight over second place. That includes me) thought the perfect family outing was going to the ballpark. If you bought him a beer, he'd tell you how with his dad he saw Babe Ruth, probably in 1927 or 1928, hit a home run completely over the right field roof (which was 1 deck back then) and onto Cherry Street. That said, for me it's: 1) Michigan football 2) Tigers 3) Michigan hockey 4) Michigan basketball 5) Red Wings 6) Lions 7) Pistons 8) 6-nations rugby (Living in Europe will do that to you)

I think in a matter of decades it will be supplanted by soccer. Baseball is slow and that doesn't  mesh well with our fastpaced, everything-now, society.

Frankly, I only like the Tigers because I grew up watching it with my Dad and hearing my family talk about the 68' Tigers.  Even  then Michigan always came first.

Baseball has a lot of history and that is cool. But the game itself is just so damn tedious to me.I appreciate the skill, but it's too slow.

Soccer is much more fun to watch for me.

Baseball could fix its problems by allowing aluminum bats. That would raise the BAs across the board and address the stifling effect of relief pitching. I realize it would create a breach in the rule books, but why should a dying sport care about that? I used to love watching college baseball, with two, three or four 400-hitters in a lineup--anything could happen. Come to think of it, that sounds a lot like the 1930s--the last time baseball was really exciting to watch.

If I had to choose a top five:

1) Michigan football

2) Michigan basketball

3) Detroit Tigers

4) Detroit Lions

5) Detroit Red Wings

I would generally say "Michigan sports and Detroit sports", but if I broke it out, well, that's what it would look like at the top.

1. Michigan Football

2. Michigan Basketball

3a. Detroit Lions

3b. New England Patriots

4. Indian Cricket

5. Detroit Tigers

6. Detroit Red Wings
(I actually like ice hockey far more than baseball. It's just that baseball is played during the offseason of every other team so I end up following the Tigers far more than the Red Wings)

7a. Indian national teams

7b. US national teams

All of the a and b are teams that I would be equally happy if they won a championship, but if the two teams are pitted against each other, I'd root for the a team.

5. Detroit Tigers

I consider myself equally dedicated to the football and basketball teams, but basketball gets the edge if pressed because - well - I like Michigan basketball fans more than Michigan football fans. It's always felt more like people who really care about Michigan, with bandwagoners weeded out.

1A)  MICHIGAN FOOTBALL

1B)  DENVER BRONCOS

2)  MICHIGAN HOCKEY/BASKETBALL

3)  DETROIT RED WINGS

I hate the NBA with a passion and don't ever watch the games and can't say I'd sit and watch MLB by choice.

Before having to explain, born in CO and bleed Orange and Blue since childhood ...hatred for the Raiders in my blood akin to some who view OSU the same.

GO BLUE!  Fall Saturdays are the best ...folllowed by Broncos games at Mile Hi
