Rank your Fanhood.

Submitted by Smoothitron on

I thought it might be interesting to see how people weigh their loyalties to the various teams they follow.

If you want something a little more concrete, rank the teams you follow in order of how happy you would be if they won a championship.  I'm thinking specifically pro and college big 4 sports teams, but feel free to throw in national teams or non-revenue sports teams as well if that's your bag.

For me:

1.  Michigan Basketball

Spending the late 90s and early 00s as the only UM basketball fan in my school was tough, but that makes the current success that much better.

2a. Indiana Pacers

Indiana kid's gonna Indiana.  I spend about 5 minutes as part of my morning routine seething about the fact Reggie Miller(and Austin Croshere) never got a ring, but I have that slight disdain for pro sports holding be back from calling them #2 alone.

2b. Michigan Football

I had the great pleasure of getting into sports right after UM won the football title in 97, so I haven't gotten the good pleasure of enjoying a championship as it happened.

4. Indianapolis Colts

Of course the team I care least about is the only one that has won a championship while I've been following them.  All hail St. Peyton.  All hail St. Andrew.

5. Any team representing the USA in international competition.

U-S-A, U-S-A!!!

Share yours so that I know who to downvote reflexively if you like teams that I don't.

which part confused you? instead of listing the same list as 95% of the rest of the board thus contributing nothing i thought id make fun of a frontrunner fan that i know. certainly most everyone should know someone like that, unfortunately.

1) Michigan Basketball: High-5 OP! (And any NBA team where Michigan players are featured)

2) Michigan Football (And any NBA team where Michigan players are featured)

3) Patriots (Yup, big Brady fan. Also I am from Maine)

4) Celtics (The Truth! Err... maybe check back about this one in a few years)

5) Warriors (I watched Klay score 37 points in like 4 minutes. The players were having so much fun that the Warriors vaulted up to number 5 on this list. This is a bandwagon thing, so they will probably drop back down)

6) Pittsburgh Pirates (My grandfather's team)

  1. Michigan football
  2. Red Wings
  3. Michigan hockey
  4. Michigan basketball
  5. Michigan softball

Also Team USA, but I don't think national teams are similar to college or pro teams.

Four and five depend on circumstances. Basketball is more likely to be on a big stage so I put it first.

If it is based on how happy a team's championship would make me, but not necessarily the order of how passionate I am about the team, then:

1. Chicago Cubs
2. Michigan football
3. Michigan basketball
4. Green Bay Packers
5. Chicago Bulls
6. Michigan hockey
7. Chicago Blackhawks
8. USMNT World Cup
9. U.S. Hockey gold medal
10. Any other UM sport winning a national championship

1. My computer.

2. Michigan Football.

42. Pro Football if its a game I REALLY want to see.

43. Michigan Basketball.

Its astounding how much Michigan football dictates my state of mind.  Yes, I do reach a point where I can disengage entirely when they are terrible, but I love Michigan football.

In the 80s and 90s basketball would have been number 2.  But, all those years of crap diluted my love I guess.

Pro baseball, basketball and hockey aren't really on the map anymore for me. I just don't have the time. Wife, kids, very demanding job,, etc..  I haven't watched a pro hockey game in a decade.

Fanhood = fandom plus manhood?

Anyway, for me at this point it's Michigan football and basketball far above everything else.  My interest in pro sports has really diminished.  Even if the Detroit teams come back into prominence, I don't know if I'll get into them like I did before.

Mostly I was reacting to the Red Sox and Bills part, given the AFC East rivalry between the Bills and the Pats. There are countless ways that I could explain your particular mix of fandom: Are you from Buffalo, but dislike NYC baseball teams so you root for their rival?

Also, listing a British MMA fighter really expands the scope of your list. I resisted including Roger Federer on my list because the OP specifically asked about "teams." I'm not actually that fussy about this type of stuff, but your post just struck me after reading all of the other posts which primarily included mid-western American sports teams. Anyhow, I immediately thought of that Dirk pic.

And respect: Fallout is arguably the greatest series of the 2000's.

Most of it can be explained by the fact that I grew up in Hawaii, meaning I could pick & choose what teams I wanted to follow w/o adhering to geography. Michigan: my dads best friend "uncle" bobby was from the state & wanted me to follow all things Michigan/Detroit. Only the Wolverines took. (This was during the Fab Five, Grbac, Desmond, T-Wheat years) Buffalo: they were in the midst of their four SB run when I first really started watching the NFL. Hasn't been that fun since. Dirk: NBA being such an individual sport, I mostly follow players. Dirk being super humble & super likable appeals to me. I'll probably stop watching NBA ball after he retires. Red Sox: I hate the Yankees, I count this as my most bandwagon type follow. Didn't really start rooting for them until 2003. Bisping: ultra heel personality appealed to me in the fighting world Nelson: the every-man Fallout: I just want to start a flame in your heart....

Anything that the university of Michigan competes in. Michigan football would be my favorite sport after that I root for anything that Michigan is involved in. I'd even root for Michigan if they were playing somebody in checkers. Maize and blue blood and a heart filled with love for my school and the block M.

1. Michigan football

2. Michigan men's basketball

4. Detroit Lions

5. Detroit Pistons

6. UConn women's basketball

7. UConn men's basketball

8. New England Patriots

9. Detroit Red Wings

Lived in Connecticut for 6 years, so that explains that.

I won't follow the other Michigan sports, but if they're doing well, I will watch and cheer no matter what the event.

1. USMNT winning a world cup. That would be epic for so many reasons. 2. Detroit Lions. Because the State of Michigan would shut down for two weeks if the Lions won a Super Bowl. 3. Detroit Tigers. Normally, I'd put this around no. 4, however, the window is closing quickly, and I want a WS now. 4. Michigan football. For obvious reasons, and so that we can tell OSU and the SEC to suck a long one. Normally would be higher. 5. Detroit Red Wings. Because the Stanley Cup is the greatest trophy in sports. 6. Detroit Pistons. NBA titles were fun back in 2004. 6. Michigan Basketball. Not ment as an insult, I'd just rather see other championships. 7. Grand Valley State Football. Got to rep the undergraduate school.

Fascinating to see Tigers so low on so many Michigander lists.  Especially when they draw 3M a year. I enjoy a game at the ballpark but too many games and pace is too slow so that is why I was curious how people would rank it

For me

  1. UM football
  2. College football in general - Saturdays are just a lost day in the fall for me
  3. Detroit Lions - if they didnt treat me like shit for nearly 40 years they'd surely be #2
  4. Any array of soccer matches but specifically interleague events (Champions League) or international events (WC, European Championships)
  5. UM basketball (but not in Ellerbe era)
  6. Any non Lions NFL football

(Soccer and football are the only sports I will sit down and watch 2 teams not from Michigan play)

  • "Special one off sports events" ala Olympics, Masters, Kentucky Derby, Wimbeldon
  • Red Wings

Then a big drop off to pro basketball and baseball for whatever reason.  When the Pistons are good I am a bandwagon fan otherwise I watch almost no NBA but a lot of people have said on the board the product is a lot better than 5 years ago in terms of motion offenses and not just pick and roll with your 2 superstar players every damn time down the floor, so maybe will wean myself back.  Baseball is just too slow for my attention span - again a bandwagon fan when Tigers go to the playoffs.

I will put a special place somewhere higher up the tote board for "random NHL hockey playoff OT" - I think the best section of any sport because you literally cannot look away for more than 10 seconds without the game potentially being over instantly.  Awesome drama.
