Question: Will You root for Jim / Jim’s team if he leaves Michigan for the NFL?

Submitted by Late Bluemer on January 7th, 2024 at 10:50 AM

I know at this point it’s a hypothetical question, but it’s something we’ve been discussing in the family.

I am torn but probably will. On the one hand, I would love to see him go back and succeed in the league and take care of unfinished business. He deserves our loyalty for all he has done for the program and he definitely left the program in much better shape than he found it.

On the other hand, no one likes to be jilted so I will also be a little bit salty in that regard.

To some degree in the long run it will depend on how well Michigan does in the aftermath. More B1G titles and CFP appearances will certainly help sooth the pain of losing him.

Of course everyone will. He achieved everything we wanted.  Took back state, knocked MSU back into oblivion, took control of BIG, took control of OSU rivalry, and knocked OSU back.

Of course. Especially if it's the Chargers or Raiders.

I didn't root for SF when he was there, but it we could feel different now, especially coming off a national championship.

But then again, I'm the sentimental type who always lives in the past. For example, I root for the Rams just because of Stafford.

I am a long time giants fan. They have been absolutely abysmal for the past decade. I still root for them but as a result I am checked out of the NFL by like week 7-8 every season (other than fantasy leagues). During the Brady years, my wife and kids and I actively rooted for the pats and then, when the left the pats, for the Bucs. But our fandom was only to see the goat continue to cement his legacy. His retirement left us looking for a second team to actively root for. Wherever Harbaugh goes will likely be our second team.

The timing of this question couldn't be much worse -- I suppose you could post this during the game tomorrow, but still.....

That said, there are a lot of replies, so okay. Detroit is my favorite team, Baltimore (not because of Harbaugh) is my AFC team. As long as he doesn't go to a rival of these teams, sure, I'll root for him. What I will do, however, is treasure him like no other Michigan coach save coach Carr for '97.

I'd rather have him stay, but it's clear we're doing to do the NFL shuffle again, despite what he said last offseason.

Just win Monday, Jim, and then go do what you will.

Nope. I was a big Seahawks fan until the NFL did what it did toward Kaepernick. They could have been a leader in addressing the issue and instead silent-blacklisted him for a silent, peaceful protest. That was the end of my NFL fandom.

And Harbaugh leaving after twice stating he wouldn't is a significant integrity issue; hard to get excited about someone doing that.

If it’s the Chargers, then yes.

Our infant - despite not knowing what’s going on at all - gets so excited when she gets to wear her chargers onesie.

We aren’t even chargers fans, we just went to SoFi for a tour and she got super excited with the lightning bolt plush toys, and so began her love of a team which will always hurt her.

No. No bitterness there, but he would no longer be Michigan’s HC and a competitor with the Lions.

Hire Kalen DeBoer. If Warde tries to go the Sherrone route he needs to be run out of town.

I can tell you wanted Harbaugh fired in 2020.  Look at you.  Can Kalen DeBoer be as effective without a generational talent like Penix?  The verdict is still out because his offense as is is very unsustainable.

The smart hire is Sherrone.  He can recruit, he can retain players, and coaches.  He has become a Michigan man.

Honestly not keen on Moore as Harbaugh's replacement either as I think he would essentially be what David Shaw was to Stanford. Solid offensive coordinator that can coast on the fumes of Jim's system and structure for a few years but unable to maintain the momentum.

But Kalen DeBoer? First off, why would he leave Washington? Second, he develops quarterbacks but has no defenses whatsoever. Do we really want a Ryan Day clone that produces a Death Star offense but neglects physicality and defense?

Let's worried more about the National Championship and worried about this afterward... We do not know what he will do but I just want to enjoy this journey...

Just for transparency, I believe he is staying for some reason.. Family is all in Ann Arbor (and just moving seem hard for the kids)... I think the big difference is Warde and how many returners.... At the end, he has done what he promised to do... Let's keep supporting him to the end (and future)...

This is easy for me since I don't have any strong NFL allegiances. I'll root for Jim for the rest of his life. If he decides he needs to go win a superbowl, I will yell my heart out for him to get it.

I would certainly support him and wish him well. His team would probably become my second team after the lions.

hes done so much for Michigan football that he does hold a special place for me.

Agreed. I will be mad, and will continue to be mad, unless we are lucky enough (like oSU a la Tressel-Meyer, but without their faults) to get a better replacement.

I heard a funny thing the other day from an oSU fan, he said in regards to Day "we are going through our RichRod/Hoke phase". My reply was, "I wish our RichRod/Hoke phase included going 11-1 (reg. season), signing elite prospects and multiple top recruiting classes". Talk to me when your season wins are less than double digits, and the loss numbers are consistently higher than the number in the wins section!

The thought of Michigan going back into the dark ages is what concerns me the most. And of course when that happens, then all of the oSU stupid fan $hit talking happens again for the next 20 years....

I will root for any team Coach Harbaugh coaches from now until the end of his or my life. I love that man and desperately wish he would end his coaching career at Michigan after coaching our team for another 20 years.

Why anyone would want to coach in that cesspool of a league is beyond me. It's like coaching in the Big Ten if the Big Ten were run by people even more incompetent than the people who run it now.

I have an ex gf who is a good person, and I'd hope it works out for. But she's not in my story anymore so emotional involvement is not relevant.

I will always root for any Michigan alum in the NFL.  Unless they're playing the Lions.

Jim Harbaugh, JJ, Blake, whomever.  I'm your fan for life.  Losing once a year to the Lions won't really hurt your career.  :)
