They definitely will be better. B1G is going to be brutal next year, especially with Oregon and uWash reloading at qb. Doubt usc is that good, but can be dangerous. And osu will still be a top 10 team at their floor, and it's on the road. Need some of the core guys to come back.

Yeah, Allen as a DC is really good.  He makes sense in that role at a top-flight school.  That said, if Allen is only going to be around for a year or two before trying to be an HC again this might not be optimal for PSU longer-term but in terms of next year they could do a lot worse than Allen.

Imo long or short term evaluation, player buy in and developing them are key.  It would be better if he adapted to what they already do well and bring his defense to that.  I believe that is why Jesse Minter did so well.  Yes his defense in large part is the same but it does have differences from what Mike MacDonald installed and ran.  That made the transition seamless is the same defense overall but adapting what he wanted to do and the players he had.  Tom Allen would be wise to talk to Diaz.

If you want to be a top flight school, I'm not sure how long-term you can really think when hiring coordinators. The most likely scenarios are you hire someone worth their salt who gets some HC looks in a couple seasons or someone mediocre (at best) who gets fired in a couple seasons. That just comes with the territory of being a top flight program.

Plus, I'm not sure Frames can afford to look too far ahead at this point anyway. Not that he is on the hot seat, but I'm not sure how many more seasons the crew in Happy Valley will be content with being second or third fiddle in the B1G, especially now with a 5-star QB on the roster.

I agree, but just saying that if Allen comes in for a year, changes the system somewhat substantially, and then bolts for a G5 job because he wants to be back at the top that's maybe an unnecessary cost for a program when you could, for example, promote from within and have more continuity.  Look at Sherrone Moore moving up from position coach to co-OC to sole OC over a couple of seasons vs. going out and trying to import a new OC once Weiss was let go.

Idk, I thought Diaz called a great game this year.  Imo I was surprised he didn’t match heavy with heavy in the 2nd half, but I think he still was concerned with a pop pass behind the secondary.  Still though, they are a dang good defense.  Franklin, had a good game plan, and only a couple obvious coaching mistakes but when it’s that close one or two is the difference.

Agreed. I'm not seeing how it will make much of a difference for UM.

PSU had a top tier defense this year. They were physical and flying around. Just like Ohio State. Nothing about any of Indiana's defenses makes me believe they'll somehow be more devastating. They'll be good like they were before. Good vs Good, someone will be better. Someone is us.

They had one of the best defenses in the country, and Diaz got rewarded with a great HC job.  In fact, for all of our sarcasm about Frames, who annoys the crap out of me, personally, PSU was unlucky to be as good as they were in a year when we were better. I always think it takes two years at least to put in a new scheme and acquire players for it, so I tend to welcome change at other schools while we seem to be maintaining continuity.

That would be a great hire. Indiana's problem was never defensive coaching, it was talent and offense (at least the years Penix wasn't around to bail them out). Add Penn State level talent and that's a great combination.

Great move if they do it,  though learning a new system always has more than a few hiccups unless you have a Hutchinson and Objabo as your DEs.  However, if Allen went and had a lot of success in his first year at PSU he'd likely get another shot as HC and more money somewhere or be poached by a better P5 team as DC.

They have a 5 star QB in Allar, a 5 star RB in Singleton, and rumour is 5 star WR Julian Flemming is heading there.  With the turnover at UM and OSU if Frames doesn't win next year he never will.

Xs and Os, Allen is fine.  I philosophically would have preferred PSU promoted Anthony Poindexter internally --- you're replacing 2 coordinators, having 1 outside and 1 internal hire seems a fair mix.  The new OC is external, from Kansas.  Internal hires are always good for morale amongst those who already are internal.

One potential watch-out: Allen does strike ms as a potential personality mis-fit.  Allen is ..... uh, he's always struck me as crazy and a bit insane.  Franklin's honestly pretty chill (probably too chill).

It's alright - I enjoy bait from time to time.

Anyway, if we're going to "muse (philosophically) about Franklin's previous comments" --- it's my opinion that it's not just men --- many if not most WOMEN ALSO respect a man more when they see he has a good looking wife or girlfriend.  And become more attracted to him herself.  Do you agree?

I'll lay some bait myself :-)
