PSA: Get your flu shots

Submitted by Gameboy on December 18th, 2019 at 2:24 PM

I wish Brian a speedy recovery, but he also serves as a great reminder for rest of us to get flu shots. I got mine and it is not too late.

I'll wash my hands. But deprive myself of one of the few solitary pleasures that remain to me? Not on your life!

EDIT: Which reminds me of a story. My daughter goes to a great school where there are some autistic kids, as is now more common in some places, integrated as much as possible into school life--I am all for it. She was in the lunchroom the other day when one very sweet-natured kid of her acquaintance sneezed profusely into a white hanky and then proceeded. . . to each the contents. She was proud of the fact that all of the kids handled the incident so well but confessed to pushing her pizza to the side.

Never have got it and probably never will. If millions of people start dying and there is a proven vaccine then yes, I’d get it. Usually the flu vaccine is just a best guess.

I have never the shot either and I have only had the flu 3 times at best in the last 10 years or so.

Read up on journal articles if you can handle/understand the scientific jargon.  It is absolutely a “best guess” since the virus can mutate substantially faster than a vaccine can be created.  A highly educated guess but still a best guess scenario.  It is usually between 50-85% effective, depending on how lucky the scientists and their computer models got.

I am 100% pro-vaccine, to the point that I believe parents should be held criminally and legally responsible for the end result of their decisions regarding vaccines, but the flu vaccine is nowhere near as effective as the typical vaccines we all get (or SHOULD) get.

Caveat: I HIGHLY recommend getting the flu shot if you are immune compromised or elderly.

I’m immunocompromised and I still am not getting it. There’s not enough research on the downsides, and it’s a product of big pharma to make money. I don’t trust the research. In some vaccines, double blind studies haven’t been performed. Look up what’s Dr. Shiva has to say, who has researched it extensively.

I’ve had the flu about 4-5 times in my life, the best defense for me has been diet, exercise, etc. I’m willing to take the risk.

Don't be a dolt.

The immunosuppressed, elderly and exceedingly ill CAN'T RECEIVE THE VACCINATION!

It is one of the very important reasons why those of us who can need to get vaccinated, to help protect those who can't. Herd immunity is about limiting the spread of a disease and therefore the risk to those already at risk.....not to mention the benefits to the person actually being inoculated, specifically the elimination of the chance they will contract the disease, or in the case of the flu a greatly reduced chance of getting it AND the proven likelihood that if by chance you do get it out will be significantly less severe in terms of symptoms.

Take the "me/mine" out of your vaccination decision and think more "we/us" with a focus on the most vulnerable among us you are helping to protect, v those mentioned above and infants too young to be vaccinated.

I guess because they stop you from catching the flu and sending it on to others.  Respiratory illness is dangerous and skipping the flu shot incrementally increases your and your surrounding people's risk of getting it.

There is an insane amount of RF passing through all of your cells every second, most materials around you are firing ions into your body, weird chemicals coarse through you and billions of organisms are living happily inside your body right now.  Since you live in the West, one of your cells just mutated from alpha particle impact due to the ambient radiation emanating from earth herself.  It's all good, you will be fine even with all those things happening to you all at once.  Respiratory illness puts the simultaneous combination of all the unhealthy things you do to shame.  Listing chemicals is not moving the needle.  Avoiding vaccines is incrementally increasing the chance someone who encounters you dies early.

- aluminum: the amount used as an adjuvant in vaccines are safe

- antibiotics: trace amounts from manufacturing vaccines.

- egg protein: if you don't have egg allergies, you have nothing to worry about.

- formaldehyde: you get more of it from eating an apple than from a vaccine shot.

- MSG: your body makes MSG.

thats the point of the post.. thanks for noticing.

that is basically the backbone of his argument for MSG, gelatin, and whatever else, being okay to be injected

then the article for MSG actually says "an MSG like substance" is in your body.. so not MSG. and that seems to be one of their main points for why the article claims MSG is okay...

thats the only article i clicked on in his post because i thought it was interesting to hear MSG isnt bad for you. of course when i clicked on that link i got one of those pop-ups that take over your entire screen and says you have a virus.. so im guessing its a reputable site

overall, i am not trying to argue whether MSG is good or bad for you.. i am just pointing out that part of his arguments are that something exists in our body so its okay.

The post was to point out the chemikills the person listed aren't something to fear just because it sounds sciency and artficially manmade. Because if he understood that he wouldn't have posted it in the first place.

And no, you don't want to inject something into your bloodstream because your body happens to make it. Ex) air bubble.

So your standard for truth is "publicly available"?  Explains a lot.  So much batshit insane stuff is publicly available.  The Protocols of Zion is publicly available.  QAnon/Pizzagte etc. are publicly available.  Flat earth is publicly available.  I could go on and on.  You really need to stop believing whatever insanity you happen to read on the internet.  No hard feelings if your head is up your ass.

So, this used to be my attitude 100%. I'm a healthy 32 year old. No kids at home, etc. Nothing to worry about! However, the flu shot is not about you. It's about helping limit the spread of the flu. If I get the flu, I'd be just fine - it'd probably feel like a bad cold. If I got the flu, felt like it was a head cold, and went to visit my 91 year old grandma and I got her sick, the flu could kill her. Herd Immunity FTW! Protect everyone else, and get a flu shot.

Several years ago I neglected to get a flu shot, and I got it THREE TIMES!  Apparently that's a thing when multiple influenza A & B strains are circulating.  One of them caused me to miss an entire week of work and the other two were no picnic either.

So I always get a flu shot now.  Although last year I didn't get it early enough and got the flu in October.

Luckily there was a new antiviral out called Xofluza that my doc gave to me.  I was better in 48 hours.  So ask for that if you get the flu.

Not all flus are created equal.  Some flus feel like a bad cold.  Some flus pretty much incapacitate you.  Rare forms of the flu kill you, even 32 year old healthy people.  It's true that sometimes the efficacy of the flu shot is not as high for some seasons, scientists sometimes guess wrong when developing the flu shot.  But the cumulative immunity you build over time from annual inoculations will ultimately decrease your risk of becoming ill....and you'll be protecting your 91 year old grandmother too.

Get a flu shot...every year.

This is completely untrue.  The antibodies your body produces from the vaccine last at most 10 to 12 months.  That is why you need to get the flu shot every year.  What does build a lifetime of immunity is natural exposure to the influenza virus.  Once you get sick from that strain you will never get sick from that strain ever again.

What about the years where the vaccine offers no protection? I guess i was just lucky. I think a lot issues stem from how people treat their bodies and what they put into it. Eating right, exercising, and a good nights sleep will go a long way in preventing illness. I'm not anti-vaccine. I get all of my shots just like everyone else. Even had to pay $150 last year for yellow fever so i could travel to South America.

Got a flu shot for the last four previous years got the flu the last four years including 104 degree fever for 32+ hours. All previous years no flu shot and no flu. No flu shot this year so far no flu.
