Phase 2 of Harbaugh's SEC Invasion near completion. Phase 3 play @ UAB?

Submitted by RED DAWN on

Good Article on my go to website for all things Harbaugh....Al.com

You may not find whining very attractive, but clearly, you're a big fan of needling. In your short time as the Michigan head coach, you've managed to get under the skin of everyone in the Southeastern Conference from Nick Saban to Gus Malzahn to Greg Sankey.

You've drawn more blood around here than a deranged mosquito on Red Bull.

Satellite camps in Alabama, Florida and Texas. Spring practice on spring break in Florida. What next? Your very own Michigan Media Day in Hoover? A Big Ten spring meeting in Destin?

The article suggests play at UAB, the school Alabama trustees tried to prevent from playing football.  Maybe a two in AA, one game there might be a good schedule pickup?

Any other suggestions for Phase Three of the Invasion?

I think he needs to actively campain for a home and home with one of their biggest and baddest (Auburn, LSU, or Bama) challenging them to come play a november game in Michigan.  They will never accept, he can use that as a recruiting advantage -- basically, SEC schools don't want to get you ready to play cold weather football, so come up here where we will.

you might find a  tough game or two noncon but for Decades their records are padded with East West South North Louisaiana...thats why they always have bowl eligible teams and proclaim how great they are because all 14 teams get 6 wins...its a Scam and a joke

Harbaugh has been more than a few steps ahead of everyone. He's completely changing the game. Urban Meyer and Nick Saban better get used to sleeping in bunk beds at recruits' houses or get used to losing recruits. Harbaugh already has phase 10 planned, and I cannot even imagine what it may be. Will he be piloting a zeppelin across the country? Having practice with NFL teams? Only time will tell.

Undoubtedly it would lose money, but this what is known as a "loss leader". The best example of a loss leader is a coupon. Stores issue them for cheap items that generate little or no revenue, then offer a price reduction that further lowers the margin of that item in an attempt to lure customers in with the goal of selling other items with larger-margin items as well.

You take the financial hit one year with the goal of getting exposure to recruits in the area. Maybe even get the bonus of the recruits going to see the game by getting the other school to spring for an official visit (which also reduces the talents OVs and limits others ability to recruit said talent). Not likely, but theoretically possible...

in Tuscaloosa. Then they can look forward to coming up and getting massacreed in Ann Arbor. We'll show them the nicest college town in the country, then when they go back they can explain why a recruit might even want to get the f out of any and all SEC towns to play in some city that has a soul. The mystery of why the lose players to "the snow" will have been resolved.

UAB would be the real financial loser.  Sure, they'd sell out their stadium, but think about the check from Michigan they'd have to forego.

As an alternative, is there anything in the rules preventing two programs from having a combined practice with perhaps a scrimmage?

OVs for the other team is a big stretch. UAB only gets a limited number and they aren't likely to be recruiting anyone we would consider taking. They're not going to host a bunch of 5* and 4* kids under some illusion that they're interested in UAB. We play at most one out of conference road game a year. We can find a better recruiting area for us and far, far better opponents. Most of our exposure is going to come from TV anyway. If we want to do UAB a favor we can offer to hold a joint camp with them down there.

It would basically be the equivalent of Alabama playing at EMU  just to get in a dig at us. I'm pretty sure the universal reaction would be to laugh at them. We'd generate the same reaction playing there.

Yes, very unlikely an OV happens that benefits UM, but not outside the realm of possibility, not to mention the idea that any legit target of the school would see UM, and maybe UM can get a feel for some back up options if guys higher on the board go elsewhere. Either way the door is open for additional exposure in the region.

I do like the idea of a joint practice and scrimmage too though. Since the SEC is more concerned with protecting its perception as he unquestioned alpha conference, no one in the conference will risk a loss by scheduling home and homes with teams in Power 5 conferences unless absolutely have to (eg USC & Clemson or UF & FSU). So get a game down south and schedule in home visits for Sunday and Monday with guys in the area. Even if UAB gives up a paycheck to get the home game, getting a school to come to their stadium will help with their recruiting as well. Everybody wins...except maybe the SEC

RR was pushing for NCAA to change that rule while he was here.

You're wrong about the SEC schedules. Look at what they have coming up this season. The opening weekend has Bama at USC, LSU at  Wisconsin, Georgia at UNC, Ole Miss at FSU, etc. That's better than what the Big Ten is foing.

I still see no advantage whatsoever to playing at UAB. How is this better than just playing a one off game at an SEC school, Miami, a Texas school, etc? It's 100 x worse than the home and homes we have scheduled already. Alabama is never going to be one of our main recruiting areas.

It was just a joke in the first place.

I can readily admit I don't know very many NCAA rules and I don't generally pay attention to SEC scheduling, so maybe they are mending their woefully inadequate non conference schedules. Good for them. I am not saying a 2 for 1 with UAB is the best idea ever, but I do see some merit to the idea of getting a game down south. Would the SEC even care if UM scheduled them? Probably not, but I don't think it would hurt UM or UAB. Just my $0.02

Spankey should just be happy that a northerner invented air conditioning, thus making the south habitable.
