My guess is that a lot of these players are just trying to see what their worth is on the open market (NIL).  Which they should it just makes the sport absurd right now...

Not just Maliq Carr this weekend - 6 other MSU players as well, including starting CB Charles Brantley. MSU going to be an entirely different wretched pile of donkey poo next year.

was looking at 247 this morning and prior to Carr they had 4 enter the portal and 1 yesterday.  Carr and Kristian Phillips have them approaching TWO DOZEN DEPARTING .  This is a revolving door that Tucker created.  He tried to bring in 20+ a year through the portal.  What this did was disenfranchise the program guys that had been there.  So his lack of continuity led to the inevitable this year, enough guys to fill jerseys but ZERO cohesion, no program culture-or a negative one if any.

I checked Ourlads to see a projected depth chart.  Looks like 0 RTs, 1 RG who happens to be a RS Freshman. Smith has got a lot of holes to fill and a ‘current 24 recruiting class of 7 is not going to cut it.  I’m not sure how much he’s recruited this region of America, probably not much from OR State so he’ll be well behind the curve to close the 24 class.  So he’ll have to desperately recruit through the portal. What kid in his right mind wants to come to EL to get his teeth kicked in? Look at mid-season ‘24 for MSU: Ohio State, at Oregon, Iowa then at Michigan.

As for Chiles, I think he may have blindly chose to follow a coach not understanding the dearth of talent awaiting.  He better have serious wheels because that O line will have him running for his life.

Don't underestimate new coach smell plus immediate playing time. Whether patching an okay team together this year will even help them much on the path go building back up a program, I'm not so sure. Sure, you could get some mercenaries to patch holes, and then have the same issue next season. Might have to bite the bullet and bottom out for a few years.

My first instinct is to say "pass," he never really impressed me much other than being better than the rest of their unplayable TEs. But Barner didn't exactly get us stoked at first so if the staff sees untapped potential..

I believe there is plenty to say about team culture.  I may be going out on a limb here, but my impression of Sparty's culture is less than ideal.  Makes it tough for an individual to "put in the extra effort" when the world around him is a dumpster fire....

HOWEVER, the mental aspect of "buying in" to a winning culture makes it easier to hit the weight room harder; run some extra gasser at the end of practice; follow the lead of the team culture.  Winning is the ultimate team bonding...  This isn't Allen Iverson coming into the program, this is a young man that wants to play with his brother and is willing to buy into the winning ways.

Bottom line, he is going to truly learn what it takes to be a champion.  Immense talent, just needs to learn how to maximize it...
