OT: Yahoo Report now ties MSU Asst. Dwayne Stephens to ASM via Email

Submitted by WorldwideTJRob on

This is a new report that just dropped moments ago, and it is starting to get harder and harder for the MSU basketball program to deny they did anything improper. The new report shows and email Christian Dawkins sent to his boss Andy Miller detailing that Stephens wanted to "trade" Miles Bridges & Gary Harris(assuming this meant Izzo or Stephens would convince them to sign with ASM) for the chance of obtaining Brian Bowen. It is a slow drip, but I have a feeling Yahoo Sports has a lot of these documents up their sleeve that they will reveal over the next few weeks leading up to March Madness.

He and Ira were talking about why Bridges came back to MSU. He was careful to say he didn’t know anything, but he asked Ira to imagine a situation in which an NBA player who’d been part of the same AAU program as a college player had been giving the college player benefits. I looked it up, and Draymond Green and Bridges were both part of The Family. I’m not suggesting this proves anything at all. But I doubt Sam asked Ira that as nothing but an academic thought experiment.

Dealing with a Larry Nassar is not. The NCAA has a lot of problems investigating reports of improper benefits. When the information is handed to them by the legal system, they do respond.

No one wants them involved in investigating Nassar and MSU. Whether they should punish MSU based on the Michigan AG's report will be debated even if it is damning.

At this point I think Izzo is going all in for one last title run. He won’t suspend Bridges for any games. However at this point Bridges should be suspended for the rest of the season.

What will the Vegas influence be on this whole scandal? You can’t tell me NCAA brass isn’t somehow in bed with them.. Vegas would lose a fortune if they refused to put a line on these games where the stars may or may not play, but also would risk major insider betting based on intel regarding who will play or sit due to scandal. The seeding could be royally screwed up and if this leads to less betting TV ratings will take a big hit. Could prove rather costly next round of negotiations. Not sure how the inner workings will shake out but let’s be real- the outcome will be determined exclusively by financial consequences/ considerations at NCAA and nothing else. Justice, fairness, values- none of it means a thing here, just greedy rich arseholes in major CYA mode to keep their scam alive and well as long as possible

Does Vegas have an inside source of information with the NCAA? Probably, Is the NCAA  brass in bed with them and makes decisions with Vegas in mind? I find that laughable.

As far as the TV contract goes. It's good for the NCAA that it's not up for renewal now. It runs through 2032. I don't think they are too worried about that next round of negotiations right now.

Lastly, the NCAA has very little control over this breaking story. Look at how much has changed in the last 24 hours. They don't know what's going to happen next or when the next big news will drop. They'll hold the tournament, but they are going to be reacting to news events, not orchestrating them. There really are are no immediate finacial consequences for the NCAA. How they handle this might have a big impact on their future though.

Two Big Ten teams...

“Dwayne Stephens – Trying to close the deal on Brian Bowen for Michigan State. Trying to do a trade deal for (Spartans) Gary Harris, Miles Bridges, etc”

“Chuck Martin – Trying to close the deal on Brian Bowen for Indiana. I told him if we can work together and if he can push for us to get (Hoosiers) Thomas Bryant and OG Anunoby two projected first rounders from IU this year we can work something out.”

One coached by Izzo, the other coached by Crean... are we surprised?  All roads do lead to Rome...

They’re actually very solid on the investigative journalism front, as unlikely as that seems. The first big sports scandal I remember them breaking was the improper benefits to Reggie Bush‘s family that started the USC/Pete Carrol downfall.

They may have made a deal with the devil to get sports scoops in exchange for giving voice to the absolute bottom of the barrel dregs of humanity on their comment boards. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy than Yahoo comment sections.

which is, more or less, the original sin of the internet (finding out what other people are thinking), but there are definitely degrees. And Yahoo comments are the purest distillation of racism, misogyny, and general-purpose villainy I've ever seen. At this point it may just be Russian troll-bots talking to each other.

My granddaughter has been accepted and will attend in the fall. She also visited and applied to MSU, my only question to her when i found out she was on her way to EL for the visit was WHY?

My son and I recently discussed this curent state of affairs at MSU, we both agreed we are very fortunate she got into UM so we didn't have her deciding between MSU and one of the other three other schools she applied to and was accepted.

I agree, but a big issue with the Nassar case was the failure of administration (not just in athletics but academics because he was also a professor). I don't have a daughter, but I wouldn't want her to attend MSU in its current state. The administration there has clearly not made (female) student safety a priority. That's not to say any school is perfect in that regard, even M, but with MSU's abysmal track record I wouldn't feel comfortable with being a female student at MSU or the parent of one.

I dont think that comment was intended in a political way. Huckabee Sanders is a well-known example of someone whose job is to put a favorable spin on shady dealings and outright lie to the press to protect her employer -- something MSU is desperately in need of right now.

The MSU assistant was offering to steer Bridges and Harris to a different agency in exchange from a top recruit being steered toward MSU?  Is that right?  If that is the case, is that an NCAA violation?  It sounds shady as hell, but I honestly don't know if it violates anything.  The recruit and is family aren't getting any improper benefits or really, anything out of this, and Harris and Bridges can go with whatever agency they want to go with.  Again, it doesn't look good, but I honetly don't know if it violates the NCAA rules, in terms of the recruit himself.

Football and basketball players lose all their remaining college eligibility the second they hire an agent.

Meet with an agent or come to an agreement with an agent and you are done.  For coaches to play inelligble students is 100% a violation.  Plus, you are ignoring the exchange of money from the agents to the players.  How do you think the agency could $teer Bowen anywhere?

Say goodbye to your plausible deniability. Just sit back and watch the show.

But that is not what is alleged to have happened.  Steering someone to an agency is different then that player hiring an agent.  I didn't see anywhere that said Harris or Bridges hired an agent, it is saying an assistant said they would steer them to the agency.  This doesn't mention anything about the players themselves having any idea any of this was going on, right?  Again, I read the article as an MSU assistant agreed to have Harris and Bridges go to that sports agency in exchange for a recruit being steered toward MSU.  It doesn't mean shadier shit hasn't or isn't going on, but this article isn't that damning as some are making it out to be.

Momma got an 'advance.' HC's are aware that their prized recruits have received impermissible benfits  and still let them play.Even after Yahoo report, these schools (except for S.D.St.) have said they will still let these players play. It's been going on for for decades.

How could an agency steer a recruit at a coach's behest if the player had not selected an agency and/or were not receiving money?

How could a coach request an agency to steer a recruit their way unless they were aware and choosing to be players in the game?

You are either willfully ignorant or just being difficult and ignoring the other reports out there that make it clear what was happening.

It let's simplify this We have a "business deal" here where Broker A (ASM) is working on behave of 2 interested parties (Bowen and Sparty) The broker is out looking for the best deal possible between the pool of interested parties (a HS Seniors and College Basketball programs). From the sheer intent, the Broker (ASM) is representing the HS Senior. That is like automatically eliminate the Senior's eligibility. It also represents the College Basketball program entering into a "business transaction" for a recruit which would be illegal. And this does not even get into the point that when a College Basketball program plays said recruit that is ineligible from day 1. That's wrong. And there is no deniability on the College Basketball program's part because they took part in the brokering deal. Broker deals are about exchanges of value between all parties. The HS Senior has the Agency work out the best deal for him. The College Program works with the Broker to get the best player and the broker gets the benefits of either party providing something in return (future clients either the HS Senior OR College Alumi) So it is a business transaction all around which laughs at the notion that College Athletes are amateurs.

Let’s go behind the curtain for a second.... Bowen was alleged to be given $100,000 for his services at Louisville. You really don’t think this “trade” situation was just involving signatures being exchanged. Bowen was going to the highest bidder. MSU was more than likely going to fork over cash to Dawkins and ASM in order to get him on campus. Then in exchange Stephens, Izzo, etc. would try and persuade Bridges and Harris to sign with ASM. Which leads me to believe this probably wasn’t their first rodeo involving these type of transactions.

that all of that is possible or even likely, but the article doesn't go into that.  It doesn't say MSU offered Bowen any money, or that Izzo even knew of the agreement.  Completely agree that it is for sure possible other shit has gone on and is going on, but that is not what the article went into.  People are acting like this is some seriously damning report that Izzo cannot possibly survive, when, in the end, all we for sure know happened was Miles Bridges's mom getting just under $550 for something, and that an assistant of his tried to negiotate a tit-for-tat trade of MSU getting a recruit in exchange for them steering a few players to a sports agency.  This could obviously only be the start of something much larger and worse for MSU, but right now, as is, it's bad, and raises more questions, but isn't terrible to the point that MSU would consider getting rid of Izzo.

You are refusing to acknowledge that MSU was actively and knowlingly recruiting a player represented by an agent.  An inelligible player and a player they knew was inelligible.

Add to this the revelation that Bridges was inelligible.

Just read this link.

Couldn't they just say the agent was acting as an advisor?  Listen, I know all of this is bullshit and has been going on forever.  I'm not refusing to acknowledge anything, and Bridges, apparently isn't inelligible.  This is an FBI investigation, that is going to take more time to conclude, and then, after they are finished, the NCAA can look into it.  That doesn't mean shit wont come out and coaches can get fired, but the NCAA isn't going to be able to actually sanction anyone or team for a while.  Whatever happens between now and then is going to be a preemptive measure by the school.

Im not sure if its against NCAA rules but influence peddling is a crime and the FBI is involved. Im not a lawyer so Im hazy on whether this would apply in sports. You usually hear about it in the political arena. It does seem reasonable though that to trade a prospects commitment for two players signature on a contract fits the definition.

I would be amazed if Izzo makes it out of all of this with his job. Between the sexual assault stuff and now this, it would really be indefensible to keep him around. It will be another black eye for MSU and their brand.

A couple years ago there was a post on the board about a Chicago high school coach that was retiring...someone interviewed him about dirty coaches and he named among others Tom Izzo ..i k ow this is kind of vague but my thought back then was we'll see what happened..now things are coming out ..an example to me would be Broke in abruptly ending his recruitment of Cassidy Winston and signing Simpson..did he want money

The story was Cassius had a visit lined up but last minute he wanted to reschedule due to a HS function. Meanwhile, Zavier was ready to commit at that moment. So rather than wait for Cassius who might say “no”, Coach B opted for the sure thing. It does make you wonder though what other factors could’ve led to Beilein choosing Simpson over Winston, being that Cassius and Miles were considered somewhat of a package deal.
