OT: Will Coach Prime be successful at Colorado?

Submitted by dmoo4u on December 5th, 2022 at 3:58 PM

I am curious to hear what folks think about Coach Prime's chances of being successful at Colorado? I think clearly he is going to be able to improve their recruiting. However, at Jackson State he was able to recruit FBS talent to come to an FCS program - which gave his team a huge talent advantage over the competition. He's not going to be able to do that at Colorado. Even if he gets very talented classes, he is only going to be on par with some of the other Pac 12 programs (although it helps him that USC and UCLA are leaving). Point being, I don't believe he's going to be able to create as big of a talent gap over his competition as he did at Jackson state. So it will really come down to coaching. He's going to have to hire a very talent coaching staff.

Some other food for thought: Will his style wear on the fan base and administration? As much as he says he wants to create attention to benefit the players, I have a hard time believing it's that altruistic. He's always been someone who relishes the spotlight. I was a little shocked at the way he talked to the team - basically telling them all to jump in the transfer portal so he could make room for his guys and introducing his son to the media by saying "here's your quarterback". Additionally, he has made some comments about not really embracing NIL (I want the kids to think about N-F-L and not N-I-L). One thing is for sure - it will be entertaining!

"You don't want to be the guy who replaces The Guy. You want to be the guy who replaces the guy who replaced The Guy".  Dorrell was replacing the legend Mel Tucker and his *checks notes* 5-7 record, how could he have possibly filled those shoes? He was destined for failure, now it's Prime Time's time to shine.

I watched most of the video not appreciating they were 1-11 this season. I initially expected he was going to talk about how excited he was to be there, looks forward to getting to know the team, they can build together, etc. Instead, it was a master class in how to get the attention of a group that has underachieved. I started envisioning the fissures in the team. Those that take offense and say F-him and try to bring along as many allies vs those who are willing to buy in.

Who knows if it will be successful, but he certainly put himself out there and ignited the change from day one. A very intentional speech that took some combination of courage, ego, and confidence.

It will be an interesting experiment on leadership that we’ll have a front row seat for given his penchant for social media.

So one thing I haven't seen anyone speak about w/r/t his hire is the absolutely INSANE talent discrepancy he was able to create at JSU. Not to discredit any of the coaches in the SWAC but he's going to be going up against other programs with equal or at least comparable resources. IMO this means that he's going to have to have analysts and position coaches as good as what USC, Oregon, a resurgent Washington, Utah, and an Oregon State team that finished with the same record as Oregon. Factor in that Wazzu and ASU are all going to be tough as hell this means that it's going to be a bit of a climb for Prime in Boulder. I wore #21 as a player because of Prime, but I do not know if CU can actually return to the levels they were previously at. Colorado and Nebraska both feel like fish out of water in terms of a conference/recruiting footprint dynamic.

Preach!

Some of those kids look flat scared.  I think he's going to be successful.  I'd send my kids to play for him in a heartbeat.  And I love how the congregation joined in.

#primecoming just sounds better than that other thing.

I think he will be successful. Colorado just spend $250 million upgrading their facilities which are very, very nice and the campus is beautiful right next to the Flatirons.  Deion does not have to be in a recruiting hotbed.  He will recruit nationally.  A recruit will get excited if they hear from Saban, Harbaugh, and yes, Coach Prime. Those are the types of texts you show your football buddy and brag about.  Sanders is more of a project manager, recruiter,  and leader as a coach.  He lets his assistants run the offense and the defense. I am assuming he will be able to bring is some great coordinators. Willie Taggert was on campus today.  He is going to play a roll in some capacity with the CU program. Of course, it depends how you define success.  If he goes 6-6 next year and makes a bowl, that's pretty darn good considering the dumpster fire of a team they had this year.  My prediction 6-6, 9-3, 10-2, and then he moves to the SEC.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan, but I think he'll do quite well.  He'll have a lot of things to sell -- NFL coaching, P5, presumably NIL$$$, quality of life, opportunity.  He's going to have to turn over most of the roster so it may not be overnight, but if he gets three years we'll have a good idea if it is going to work.

I doubt it. He is riding the hype train and will be able to recruit. Probably better recruiting than Colorado has ever gotten.

But going up against better competition takes more than just coaching. It’s team chemistry, program attitude, buy in at all lvls etc.

Look at Urban Meyer and Saban going to the NFL where the talent is more lvl. Not even close to the success they had in college.

I keep seeing people say that Colorado does not have football talent.  Aside from a handful of players in the state, this is absolutely true.  Do you really think Sanders is going to be recruiting regionally?  No way!  He is going to be pulling players nationally from California, Texas, Ohio, and the southeast. There are too many get off my lawn old guys saying they wouldn't play for him. Maybe 1980s kid from the suburbs is not interested.  Today's kids want to go to a place with swagger. I am thinking 1980s Miami Hurricanes.  Deion will be successful.

Nick Saban is either a robot or a time-traveling alien, and Dabo Swinney is the goofiest dude in football. Neither of those guys exude what I would call swagger (at least not dark-sunglass-and-jewelry-wearing-attention-seeking-publicity-stunt swagger in the vein of Deion Sanders). And yet, Alabama and Clemson are the most successful programs of the past six years or so.

The swagger narrative about "today's kids" is overplayed. Yeah, Prime might be able to land a few recruits that Colorado might not have otherwise landed, but by and large, elite recruits want to go to places that have proven track records of winning and producing NFL draft picks. Their decisions are based on maximizing their chances of success. Very little has changed in that regard, "swagger" or no swagger.

I personally don't think he will be successful. He was successful at Jackson St recruiting better than the SWAC teams he was playing against, but he still only had a handful of good players. I think Deion is in for a world of hurting when he starts coaching against PAC-12 teams. Colorado was 1-11. Deion thinks bringing in his son and few top 100 guys is somehow going to make Colorado worth a damn

His so-called coaching career is a gimmick, and Colorado buying into it is a desperation move. He'll either flame out or decide he's had enough and go back to doing whatever it is he did before launching this gimmick.

I've been paying more attention to Deion these last few years and have been overwhelming impressed with him on and off the field.

Colorado just became a program that will expect to win 9 games every season and will likely be league champs after the LA schools leave.

Coach Prime ?  What the heck, he isn't a steak.  It's PRIME TIME.... yet the media always called him Neon Deion which he didn't like.

And I bet he makes it.  To take Jackson St undefeated so fast, is impressive.

I also just realized that their schedule next year is a real doozy. highlights include:

  • At TCU to open the season
  • At Oregon
  • At UCLA
  • At Utah
  • At Washington State

Home game highlights include:

  • Oregon State, USC, and Nebraska

I’ve had the same thought about the talent gap he created that he won’t have at the P5 level. I also think coaches in the P5 level are better than the SWAC. We will see how good of a coach he really is

He seems a little all about himself to me, and calls himself Coach Prime which is very “un-adult” of him. The best coaches are pretty boring adults in the room.

He also has some massive and somewhat shady failures with his charter/prep school in Dallas. He was accused of choking 2 people. He’s in a BRIGHT spotlight in a position of maturity with real accountability from the media and the University. He hasn’t been in the biggest spotlight since his playing days when many things are pushed under the rug, and he’s been a Big fish in a small pond since his playing days where he likely had little accountability. Maybe he’s changed, but then again, he still refers to himself as Prime and he’s a grown ass man

I think he'll be a success, he's a great coach

The "N-F-L not N-I-L comment is both on and off. Buffs might be a program it's more off

Succeed? Yes, initially. Everyone will hail any and all success, and that can be achieved. From there. . . success will breed some success. More than 4-5 years has be be anyone's guess. How bored will he get?

Yes, people are talking about CU, that's already more than anything else they've done for a decade. He doesn't have to turn them into a 10 win team or anything to be a success, just get enough talent to drag them out of the gutter.

five-year contract worth $29.5 million before bonuses and incentives. Sounds like they signed him to a Jim Harbaugh like contract.

300k buyout from Jackson state.

That's a steal In todays market.. I think he  turns them back into a respected program.

This will be interesting to watch.  His teams at Jackson State did well, but those teams were also more talented than his competitors.  In fact, his JSU teams had more four and five star players than Colorado did this past season.

Recruiting, development, scheme, and quality of execution.

Prospects will be interested in what he has to say - and, how they compete in the near / mid term against USC, UCLA, Utah, Oregon, and Washington - will make for intriguing Saturday night west coast football watching.

P.S. JSU is an FCS program in the SWAC.  This year, according to 247, JSU had a more talented roster than Kansas State, Wake Forest, and Tulane.  Can he win with lesser or equal talent is something we’ll see.

If I had to guess, he certainly couldn't do much worse than they did this year.

In all likelihood, he'll improve them marginally for a couple of years and they'll end up with a good season but not CFP good. Because they really only can go up from here.

He'll then get coach of the year and go to a program that demands the highest level of  outcome and not deliver.

Deion is a narcissistic ass.  I hope he fails miserably. He's got that condescending prosperity gospel huckster persona. It's like your watching a poorly scripted football movie designed to amp up 13 yr old boys complete with all the re-run platitudes their heart's desire. Incredibly cringey and contrived to adults, but maybe impressionable college kids will find it compelling.

I think he'll be fine; he'll probably get them to a bowl in the next 3 years.  But he's absolutely looking for his next stop and it'll be interesting to see how he handles losing some games and not being able to out talent people.

I also think he's going to rub a lot of people the wrong way and if this goes south they won't think too much about dragging him on the way down.

EDIT:  I'll also add that his ability to attract transfer talent in Jackson Mississippi (where Jackson St. is) is different than Boulder Colorado.  There's simply not as much local talent in a place like Colorado as in the South, and so while he may be able to recruit some kids there it'll be interesting with the portal just how much he'll be able to retain.

If my memory serves me right, Deion Sanders played in the Big House with FSU in the mid-1980s in a game where he was pretty much rendered ineffective and wracked up a bad penalty while Michigan rolled to victory.

PAC12 is brutal. Maybe the third-best conference, but any one of them is capable of playing spoilermaker.

Is 9-3 successful for CU? Probably
