OT: Vasectomy advice

Submitted by Bo Schemheckler on August 1st, 2019 at 9:48 PM

Tomorrow, after 3 kids, I will be retiring the ol'  huevos. It's been a good run but 3 kids under 4 is enough and it was time for some heavy risk reduction. Who has been snipped and do you have any advice for the next few days that I should know about?

It’s not a big deal. You might be a little sore the first day after. Take some down time. Sit on some ice. In a day you will be fine. It also takes nothing away from your sex life either.

When those three kids ultimately lead to your divorce, the vasectomy will be the best thing that ever happened to you. You'll start tearing through Tinder and Bumble like a madman and, once you trade the STD tests, hoo boy, the road to glory runs straight through Bareback City.

Had two vasectomies as the first one didn't take.  NOT how I wanted to be associated with the 1%

Both procedures were completely different experiences.

The procedure the first time was actually not bad at all.  The recovery was pretty common, although I wasn't expecting so much bruising.

The second procedure was not fun at all.  A lot of pinching, pressure and pain.  But the recovery was a breeze...actually mowed the lawn and put together some wood furniture the next day.

I  had the non scalpel procedure and it was painless.  What wasn't painless was playing mini stick hockey with my son 4 days after the procedure and wearing a wrist shot to the area.  That hurt but the frozen peas to the area can also go wrong.  I did the trick of putting them in a ziploc bag but it was so much freezing that it essentially caused slight "freezer burn" to the area.....that was the worse part.

1. no mini sticks

2.wrap peas or freezing of choice in dish towel

You should have scheduled during Masters weekend or the NCAA tournament so that you could sit on your ass and watch your favorite sporting event guilt free.

'Cojones', rather than 'huevos'...you aren't getting scrambled. As for advice, I offer this - the longer you sit/lay still and the longer you cycle that bag of frozen peas, the better off you will be. Don't get snipped on Friday and play hoops on Monday, unless you are into discomfort. If you can take a few days off the week following your appointment, do it. Best of luck.

I did it when I got divorced. The notion of paying child support to two different women was not going to be in the cards for me. I drove there, got snipped, and drove home. Not a big deal at all. Just do exactly what the doctor says (put a bag of corn or peas on your nuts for 48 hours). Pissing the first time scared the hell out of me, but it was a nothingburger. Easy peasy. Go get it done.

The whole procedure took less than 15min. Urologist even let my girlfriend observe, but she's also an MD, so maybe that's why. Anyway, frozen peas were the best. But I only needed them for a day and a half. Truly easy peasy.Hardly any little swelling or pain. Doc suggested no sex for 5 days and that I probably wouldn't feel like it, but did on the third day with no problems.

Did it 30 years ago. It worked. Had some laughs with friends afterwards about how soon we went biking or skiing after the procedure. Ice baby Ice is correct. Everyone reacts a little differently.

I ended up reversing the procedure for a one-time operation to have our fourth. We were blessed, all healthy - all good. Highly recommend it.

One of the best decisions I ever made.  Gonna be sore for a couple of days.  Get some frozen bags of peas/corn.

Most important - SHAVE.  I cannot stress this enough.  My Dr. said not to and then put surgical tape from hip to hip.  Worse part of the entire thing was trying to cut the tape free of my short and curlies!

Got mine done about five years ago.  Local anasthesia, which led to this exchange on the operating table:

Doc:  Your member is not cooperating with us today [was flopping around].

Me:  How do you think I got here in the first place?

The nurses chuckled.  Then I smelt something being cauterized.  Strange experience.

Took about a month to recover.  Learn from my mistake and don't play pickup basketball for a couple of months.  Frozen peas helped.  Have not regretted it since.

I feel kind of bad for ya'all.  I had an 8:30 appointment and was back to work behind my desk by 10:15.  No real pain, just a little uncomfortable.

The actual surgery was a breeze except things shrunk up a bit because the room was so cold. When tugging on the vas deferens to cut it I swear I could feel that pressure all the way up in my chest.  Not painful, just weird feeling.

The bonus was my wife wanted to see the incision the next day and things got a bit carried away after that.  Everything functioned as it should!!

Take it easy, ice the boys and don’t go on a ladder on the roof no matter how good you feel. I did this and spent the weekend on the couch with an ice pack

My wife and I knew we didn't want kids but I still waited until I was in my mid-30 thirties to get mine done.  Happy I did it.  I'm a Family Med doc and I have seen a couple of patients where it didn't take.  In both cases, they also didn't do their post-vasectomy sample.   The only problem I had with pain was trying to go mountain biking about 2 weeks later- Bad idea!

Best of luck w the procedure. I did it 10 years ago (after 2 kids) and have zero regrets. It’ll be nice for your wife to have a choice whether to continue using birth control.

Had it done the day before we lost to Toledo. Good news was that I saw kickoff and the meds knocked me out until the final minutes of the game so there was minimal suffering. Experienced minimal pain during the procedure and recovery. However, should you ever want it reversed, you are looking at minimum $10,000  - $18,000 out of pocket (vs $20 co-pay for the snip). Swelling and pain is far worse also.

As one of the few Mgoladies on this blog, I have to admit that I found this thread pretty entertaining. Try being exposed to everybody and their mother during a delivery, then we 'll talk.
