OT - a new twist on our rivals... Who are your two favorite Buckeyes and Spartans?
Going into what will probably be a slow weekend for news, I jthought it woudl be a good time for an outside the box topic. We have plenty of well-earned negative board posts about our two major rivals but not too many "positive" ones. Here is one...
Question: who are your two favorite Buckeyes and / or Spartans?

I didn't realize Karsch was a Spartan Alum until seeing that piece on BTN(?) -- growing up a M fan with season tickets and heading back to AA to see many games while attending MSU.
I like the Owens and Spielman choices for OSU -- I would add my dad (though he is 50% Boilermaker also)

I have respected plenty of buckeyes. I feel like their football program historically has a similar mentality to ours. There is lots of mutual respect in that football rivalry.. It's mostly their fans that are the loonies.
MSU on the other hand, I can't think of a single one. Their fans are just as looney but the sports team tend to take on some of the toxic attitudes of the fans. I guess Gibson, but I was too young to see him at MSU.

I liked Winfield's game at osu, Still hated he played for osu.. I had visions of him being the corner opposite of woodson! He fit that hard nose mentality!

osu: William Buford (another toledo dude)

Spartan - Cassius Winston. Great player obviously, kept his head down and when all the Nassar stuff happened he seemed to handle it better than anyone at the institution including leadership.
buckeye - I’ll join the spielman bandwagon.

Spartan: Mateen Cleaves
Buckeye: None

ummmmmm.......
April 21st, 2023 at 10:24 AM ^
OSU - Chris Spielman.
MSU - John Smoltz and Steve Smith. I will never respect anyone associated with Staee football or basketball who voluntarily played for Tiny Tim or Mork.
April 21st, 2023 at 10:29 AM ^
Spielman and Jay Burson (hoops).
Steve Smith is one of my favorite college bball players ever. Gibby. Bad Moon Rison was fun to watch, along with Blake Ezor.

It's hard to pick favorites the realm of sports for obvious reasons, but outside sports can be easy.
OSU: Jeffrey Dahmer
MSU: Jemele Hill
/S
April 21st, 2023 at 10:32 AM ^
OSU: Spielman
MSU: Steve Smith, Shawn Respert, Jamie Wesley - I'll admit I was a basketball junky and just like the way they played the game. Never rooted for their success vs Michigan but watched them. Respert had such a smooth stroke.
Wesley was from my class D hometown and made it to MSU and scored 1,000 points and was All Big Ten I believe. Was a small town huge story and phenomenal basketball player.
April 21st, 2023 at 10:33 AM ^
MSU: Magic and Gibby (yes...LA fan and Vin Scully called him Gibby so he's Gibby). Sparty is undeserving of both of them.
OSU: John Cooper

I don't think anyone's yet mentioned Jud Heathcoate. His teams were well coached. His antics were so authentic I could never hate him. I laughed my ass off at him on the sidelines banging his head with his fists. Did not take a back seat to Gene Keady or Bobby Knight--true throwbacks of college coaching.
April 21st, 2023 at 10:33 AM ^
OSU - Troy Smith was really fun to watch play, I could not bring myself to hate him no matter what. I was a huge fan and really disappointed when he got mono while with the Ravens. I think he would have had a nice NFL career.
MSU - Mo Pete, sorry but I just like his game.....Adam Hall for hockey because he was a family friend
April 21st, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
OSU - Marcus Marek & Jack Nicklaus
MSU - Anyone not named Jamele Hill
April 21st, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
OSU: Garrett Wilson. Great WR and from all accounts a very impressive young man.
MSU: I hated when we'd play against him, but I never had anything but respect for Cassius Winston.
Least Favorite (or at least first ones that come to mind)
OSU: Aaron Craft and Mike Weber.
MSU: The Panisaulk and Bullough clans. Nick Ward, Paul Davis, Denzel Valentine. Draymond obviously (even though I actually respected his game when he was in college).
April 21st, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
Buckeyes: Chris Spielman and Antoine Winfield
Spartans: Rob Fisher, Ben Fisher, Abby Fisher, Scott Mitnick, Nicole Mitnick, and Emily Kopitz.
April 21st, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
MSU - Lorenzo White
OSU - Eddie George
Only because they played for my favorite NFL team (Oilers/Titans).

On a related topic...
What is you favorite STD - Herpes or Chlamydia?
What is your favorite cancer - Anal or Testicular?
What is your favorite terrorist organization - ISIS or Al Qaeda?
April 21st, 2023 at 10:46 AM ^
Made me lol literally.Thanks.
April 21st, 2023 at 11:12 AM ^
I'll play (since this creates less dissonance for me than the OP)
Chlamydia, it is treatable.
Testicular, is more easily treatable, and at my age, no great loss (ok, that actually literally hurt to type), and would allow a greater chance of a prolonged life caring for my family.
I guess whoever has the coolest uniform for the last question.
April 21st, 2023 at 12:40 PM ^
Chlamydia - easier to cure
Testicular - higher survival rates and as much as I like my cujones, I don’t need them anymore
third option - founding fathers
April 21st, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
tOSU - Jesse Owens, Jack Nicklaus
Staee - Dick Martin (Rowan & Martin), Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul & Mary)
April 21st, 2023 at 10:40 AM ^
Ohio State: Harlan Ellison. He only lasted 18 months at OSU. Was expelled for punching a professor. Go figure.
Ohio State honorable mention: Curtis LeMay.
Sparty: Kirk Cousins. I live near DC and he was the Redskins' (now named Commanders) QB. He was a solid solution at QB for them, but I guess wasn't flashy enough for Dan Snyder. Whenever he did an interview on local TV, he was humble and never threw anybody under the bus. I don't know him personally, but he seems like an all around nice guy.
April 21st, 2023 at 10:41 AM ^
Nicklaus and Gibson.
April 21st, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
OSU: Jon Sanderson & Mark Baker. Sanderson because he saw the light & joined the good guys. Baker is a former all Big Ten guard. Great guy, does a lot for the youth in our area. Played pick up hoops with him at the Y after he graduated. Once stole the ball from him, hauled ass down the court and ... missed the layup.
MSU: Magic & Scott Skiles. Was at the game at Crisler shortly after Skiles was arrested for DUI. Crowd was on him the whole game but he took it to UM & won the game. Really admired his effort that night.
April 21st, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
Easy question:
1. Chris Spielman
2. Magic
April 21st, 2023 at 10:46 AM ^
For active players, I'm a fan of Xavier Tillman. Seems like a guy who didn't get a lot hype (for a MSU player) and doesn't have amazing skills/measurables -- but he's just a smart, hard-working player who has forced his way to being a solid NBA player.
April 21st, 2023 at 10:47 AM ^
OSU: Chris Spielman
MSU: Joe Stewart, of course.

technically it would be my father, but i'll put out his best friend at MSU, and who also played football with my father, glen johnson. glen also played baseball at state and is in the michigan sports hall of fame as a golfer. a 'guys guy' from that greatest generation - funny, gracious, charismatic and talented. he and dad went off to war together, dad got P-51's and glen flew bombers, the B-24. he would complain (with a smile on his face), "your dad got P-51's and i was a [expletive] truck driver!"
MSU Football Player (1941 - 1942, 1945)
About Glen Hamilton Johnson:
Glenn Hamilton Johnson
Amateur Golfer
Michigan State Football Player (1941 - 1942, 1945)
Glenn Johnson was born on Grosse Ile, Michigan and was a very good athlete at Grosse Ile High School where he earned nine varsity letters in football, baseball, basketball. He attended Michigan State and played quarterback in the early 1940’s as well as serving in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot in World War II. Johnson took up golf upon his return from the military and was the Golf Association of Michigan’s (GAM) Golfer of the Decade in the 1950’s with his five Amateur titles, a GAM Championship and several other accomplishments. He also qualified for 17 USGA championships, including five U.S. Amateurs and four U.S. Opens and was low amateur in 1981 at the U.S. Senior Open at Oakland Hills. Known for his keen wit and wearing colorful attire, he was one of Michigan’s truly great golfers. Glenn Johnson was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. He passed away on December 14, 2014 at 92 years of age.
we always called him 'uncle glen' even though he wasn't a true uncle. he passed 3 years after dad. the greatest generation, indeed.

JT Barrett seemed like a "give my all for OSU" kind of guy, which I respected. I also liked Chris Spielman.
For MSU, I would say Ryan Miller when he was a goalie and Matt Ishbia. I reckon I'd try to pay for coaches and players at Michigan in today's climate if I had his kind of money.

I really liked MSU football growing up - not as much as Michigan obviously, but I loved a lot of those players: Charles Rogers was probably my favorite (his two catches against Notre Dame were all-timers, in my opinion). TJ Duckett, Herb Haygood, Plaxico, DeAndre Cobb, Drew Stanton... but once Dantonio got there and they got really good is when my hatred began.
As for Ohio State, Ted Ginn, JT Barrett, Chris Gamble, Olave... I kinda like Marvin Harrison Jr. right now.
Now that I think about it, a big part of my college football fandom is based on which players I like, and who I think is great. I usually rooted against Oklahoma, but I loved Jalen Hurts, so I was a Sooner fan for a season. I don't genuinely like any players on MSU now (and it's still too soon for KWIII), so I hate them. OSU has had some dudes I genuinely think are great and fun to watch.
I'm not as much of a lizard-brain when it comes to basketball, at least I like to think I'm not. So I always root for Michigan, but I don't hate State like I do in football. Kalin, Summers, Cassius... and if you go back to Mateen and MoPete... all fun guys to watch.

Buckeye: Jack Nicklaus
Spartan: ironically and seriously, my little brother

This has to be a Michigan only thing because I never thought of Sparty as a rival. It was Ohio and Notre Dame and now I feel it’s Ohio and Penn State.
Buckeyes: Scary Terry and Chris Spielman

JT Barrett. I rented him his apartment when he was at OSU. An absolute genuine dude. Very good guy. Dontre Wilson was also cool. I do like Day as a person. Off the field he’s a caring guy. Though, it may be clouded vision since he looks like a stand out human being compared to the previous coaches.
April 21st, 2023 at 11:51 AM ^
At least JT wasn't short on the rent, amirite?
We tend to demonize our rivals without considering their history & challenges. Day's father committed suicide when Day was 8. Would not wish that on anyone.
Tressel was a phony and a hypocrite. Urban was a scumbag. Day, on the other hand, seems like a decent dude.
Of course, it's a little difficult to separate our impressions of these guys from their records against us.
April 21st, 2023 at 11:05 AM ^
Spielman feels like an obvious choice for good reason.
For Sparty, I do really like KWIII. Well "like" might be a strong word, maybe respect is better. Kid is a baller.

Error 401 Not Found
Mostly kidding...
MSU - I really liked Cassius Winston for some reason. And Spielman obviously.
OSU - Nah.
April 21st, 2023 at 12:21 PM ^
Missed the era when Spielman was @ MSU.
Cassius Winston is kind of babyfaced and has a 'good guy' look to him, so he's tough to hate. He's also never had legal or personal issues like so many other Spartan athletes.
Also, his 19-year old younger brother died after being hit by an Amtrak train, which was tragic.

But I guess an easy one for Sparty is Sparty women, who also happen to be easy.
