OT: Kentucky QB Gunnar Hoak to grad-transfer to Ohio State

I've learned that Gunner Hoak, the former Kentucky QB from Dublin, will be transferring to Ohio State. The expectation is that he will compete with Justin Fields for the starting job and not just be an extra roster arm, though Fields is obviously the front-runner.

Kind of a follow-up to previous board discussion of OSU's backup QB Matt Baldwin entering the transfer portal from an already depleted QB room from a depth perspective.

This will give Ohio State 3 scholarship QBs going into the 2019-2020 season, and the drop-off is pretty steep.

  1. Justin Fields
  2. Gunnar Hoak -or- Chris Chugunov (former grad-transfer from WVU)

Yeah, I did a quick google search out of curiosity and boredom.

Sounds like Gunnar Hoak (RsFr.) narrowly lost the starting QB job at Kentucky to Terry Wilson (RsJr.) before the 2018 season. Hoak was even put in for a couple games early in the season when Wilson struggled.

Wilson eventually solidified his starting position, and decided to return for this redshirt senior season. Now Hoak is grad-transferring with two years of eligibility left.

Low 3 star with MAC offers and a Syracuse offer coming out of HS and he got no run at UK. He's not competing with Fields no matter how hard they try to sell that.

I realize that you’re an Ohio fan, so mostly likely a fucking retard, but Harbaugh had a long career before coming to Michigan. A career in which he developed many good QBs.

Peters didn’t work out, but he got Wilton within inches of beating a great Ohio team. A shitty QB coach can’t do that.

I'm sure he'll enter in the second half against us for an injured Fields and proceed to drop a few key third-down dimes while leading the Buckeyes to yet another impressive victory.

They also took a preferred walk-on 3 star with one FBS offer (from South Alabama). So their QB depth chart is:

1) True Sophomore with 42 career attempts in his first year in the system.

2) RS JR with 26 career attempts who couldn't beat out a JUCO transfer with 11 TDs to 8 INTs at Kentucky last year.

3) RS SR former walk-on transfer from WVU.

4) Walk-ons.

Yikes.

but it's Ohio State so we know how it will go. Either Fields plays at a near-Heisman level all season and is never injured or he is injured, one of these back-ups enters and plays miraculously well for them, and once they graduate will never play a second of professional football anywhere

I prefer talking smack when we actually accomplish something rather than chirping as April B10 champs.  Adding gasoline to the narrative of a cocky and arrogant UM team that hasn't put much of a whisper in the W column in the last 2 decades and then losing to an unknown coach without a preseason functioning quarterback doesnt have a nice ring to my ears.

Despite that being a strength, I hope they don’t let him run.  It takes a QB a full year to learn the offense.  Two grad transfers in their first year with the program are not going to be a serviceable true backup. Chugunov enrolled early but he still won’t be fully up to speed.

Knowing our luck, Fields gets injured and Hoak ends up being Hiesmen level talent...don't worry he too will get hurt...but then this Chugunov kid will end up being the best of three...for about 4 games...which inevitably will include a beat down in Ann Arbor...I'm gonna go cry at the thought of it now.

So here are Gunner Hoak's Kentucky stats from last year:

4 games  13/26 = 50%  167 yds  2 TDs  1 Int

Maybe we should hope he wins the job, with only a month of practice to learn the system  ;o)
