OT: Florida Suspends Alcohol At Bars

Submitted by UNCWolverine on June 26th, 2020 at 11:54 AM

Florida is suspending the drinking of alcohol at bars, according to a tweet from Halsey Beshears, the secretary of the Department of Business & Professional Regulation.

The move comes as Florida on Friday announced a record-breaking number of coronavirus cases.

It also comes just days after Gov. Ron DeSantis threatened to pull the liquor licenses of bars that didn’t follow the state’s re-opening guidelines.

“If you go in and it’s just like mayhem, like Dance Party USA and it’s packed to the rafters, that’s just cut and dry. That’s not just an innocent mistake,” DeSantis said.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.

How is it that one side says follow science and the other side says ignore science and yet both sides are called extremist?   How is it that both sides are off the rails when one wants to flow facts and data.  Calling both as off the rails is BS.

And this isn’t really about extremism.  It’s about how to tap into extreme points of view to con those groups and achieve a personal agenda.

what part of science says it's okay for millions of people out in the streets protesting night after night during a pandemic? Quit acting like one side was playing by the rules when the reality is their leadership was every bit as bad pandering for votes and going against the "science" when it best suited them.

There's never been a bigger protest in this country's history then what we're witnessing nightly. You seem to be fine with that though, unreal.

Michigan and my state of New York finally seem to be well into the recovery side and I really feel like the cases exploding in the south are going to ruin it for us. Feels like no way it's gonna stay away from us

Its almost as if NY is the economic heart of this country and the entry point for most of the world to come to the US.  NY got hit hard early when we didn't know what we were up against, how quickly it could spread, etc.  FL and TX had 5 months to prepare and failed MISERABLY because they listen to the asshat in the White House claim its a non-issue and will go away.  Even today, the Trump acolyte in FL is still refusing to do anything beyond the absolutely minimum to try to help this issue.  He is trying to manipulate the numbers instead of instituting plans to try to stop the spread -- read his steadfast refusal to require people to wear masks

They didn't "originate" in NY -- they were spread there from Italy via the three international airports there and it then caught fire due to the population density.

DTW, too, has many direct flights to China and Italy. Oakland County got hit hard with CV due to the fact FCA is there and Fiat's HQ is in Northern Italy in Turin.

It took longer for it to hit Little Rock as they likely don't even fly Cessnas in there.

You are always very quick to drop to the demagogic lowest common denominator and make for a fine deplorable.

I spent three days in NYC last week and everyone was masked up when indoors as were 70% of those outdoors -- they have, as has MI, done a good job at quelling the outbreak but there will be flare ups nonetheless. Unfortunately, those from deplorable-ville have chosen not to learn a thing from NY and MI as coached by Trump.

I'm literally in Florida now to visit my Dad. I went to pick up lunch at a bar/restaurant, and I was the only person wearing a mask. Many of them looked like I was from a different planet. My hands are almost raw from washing after going in there. They are nuts.

The problem with others not wearing the mask is that they are more likely to get the mask wearer sick than the other way around. Masks are much more effective at containing the virus than they are for protecting. Putting a mask on is a simple selfless act that people refuse to do because so many cannot think about more than me, myself, and I.

I was just down there a couple weeks ago to help my mom come back up north. I tell you central Florida Wal-Mart was a trip. My 18 yr old son and I were one of the few who were wearing masks, but what's interesting is my friend who coaches in Boca Raton says everyone down that way were wearing masks where ever he went.

I'm probably gonna open up a can of worms here but... if you're both outside (say, walking your dog) and 10+ feet away from people sans facemask, how bad is that?  Generally that's what I see in my neighborhood and what I do, though I do carry a mask if I run into friends and stand around chatting with them for an extended period of time.  I'll 100% wear a mask when inside at a store or at work, or if I'm hypothetically ever outside and cannot avoid staying 10 ft away from people.

Probably not bad. I say that as someone who wears a mask every time I leave the house, even if just walking the dog. Most folks in my neighborhood aren't wearing masks 100%, but I do, mainly because it's hard to guarantee that I stay 6 feet apart in Chicago, and my neighbors are over 60.

Wearing a mask isn't a huge issue and it helps, so I do it.

Saw a tweet to the effect of "If there was a medication that made you 5x less likely to get Covid you'd take it right? That medication is a mask".

Doesn't hurt to wear yours.

I’m a big fan of and advocate for masks indoors and in crowded outdoor situations, but the risk of transmitting covid outside as you walk past someone is quite small.  When I am outside, I have a mask to put on if need be, but i’ve yet to run into a situation walking my dog where I couldn’t give people a wide berth.    While biking, the 1 or 2 seconds I may be within 6 ft of someone is highly unlikely to be enough to transmit the virus.

I think obviously if we all put plastic bags over our heads we’d slow the spread more than just cloth or disposable mask wearing.  This is to say, what you’re doing sounds like a reasonable balance of risk vs life. I believe, from what I’ve read, is the major spread is indoors in groups of people. I’m assuming if everyone were acting as you describe above, the Infection numbers wouldn’t be growing like they are.

That's a reasonable approach. When I walk my dog or go for a run I don't wear a mask. I give anyone I cross paths with ample room by running on the grass along side the sidewalk while they walk on the grass on the opposite side. Or I hop onto the road real quick until we get further apart.

Been wearing a mask 100% of the time when indoors in public areas, even if its to pick up a to go order. Have seen plenty of people not wearing masks indoors like last weekend when I had to run to Home Depot for some stuff to fix the house I'm moving into. Probably 4-5 employees not wearing mks and another dozen or so people without them.

It's a mild inconvenience (the masks) but it's what we have to do right now. I hate it and my wife (who has asthma and has parents with a lot of pre-existing conditions) and I complain to each other about how annoying it is to wear, but damn it if I'm going to be the one that brings it home and potentially hurts my family just because I didn't want to wear it while standing at a checkout to pick up some light fixtures.

Kroger - Higher likelihood of women doing grocery shopping from all walks of life. Middle/working class. Higher/lower education. Everyone needs food.

Lowes - Higher likelihood of men shopping for home improvement projects. What's the demographic of men who will take on a home improvement project? Probably more working class, trade guys. Also Lowes is a bigger store in general. They're warehouses so people might no think it's as cramped as when you're in a grocery aisle grabbing some cereal.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  I will say that wearing a mask all day inside is quite annoying (and sacrilege! I do remove it at the office when isolated to drink water, snack, and to enjoy not having the fucking thing on my face)

Also, for any MGoWomen reading this, I have to imagine this like a small, small approximation of what it's like when y'all endure an ill-fitting brassiere all day, so my sympathies if not empathies.

I get a bit of a chuckle when I see folks out walking or even in their cars wearing masks.

Not to defend people in TX, FL, or AZ.....but please note that this is a 1st wave for us.  People just don't/didn't see the Coronavirus as a threat because the lockdown stopped us from seeing NY, NJ, or MI levels of cases.  For example -  as of 2 weeks ago only 0.1%  of people in my zip code had tested positive for Covid.  (Even with the surge it is still under 0.5%)

This leads to a lack of urgency by the general public - i.e. 1 week ago there were maybe 10% customers wearing masks inside public buildings or businesses .  Now the cities and/or counties have all mandated mandatory masks but enforcement could still be improved imo.

AZ might have been lacking in Covid response but it does have one of the best websites for tracking Covid data - azdhs.gov .  Some interesting data here -- i.e. if you are aged 20-44 in AZ and are diagnosed with Covid-19 there is a 3% chance you will be hospitalized and only a 0.2% you will die.  This does NOT exclude those with pre-existing conditions.  ( 32,251 cases, 1022 hospital stays, 80 deaths.)  Unfortunately those numbers are 21.7% and 13.6% if you are over 65.  (8383, 1822, 1147)

If you're outside and 10 feet away from someone then you're fine. I wear a mask every time I go outside in public to set an example and in case someone get's to close to me. But if you're at a not crowded beach 10 feet away from someone you're likely fine. I think it's becoming increasingly clear that transmission is much lower outside

Meanwhile, Desantis mentioned that Disney World is still approved for a July 11 reopening. Because...Florida.
