OT: Cable Cutting
In a fit of rage I cancelled Directv because they did not carry the British Open on NBC. While it felt good to break away from that big monthly bill I quickly realized that I need a replacement service.
What is everyone using that broke away from the cable? Directv was expensive but they pretty much had every college football game available.
I don't live in the US and I don't have cable and even I read this. Helps me to keep up with likely meaningless information that somehow pleases me to know. So thank you for the post. Also I think we all hate the inefficiency that is cable packages, so we are always rooting for something new to shake things up.
Thanks for the post...it's the sporting world dead season.
Maybe instead we could discuss the Corn Hole championship or the Little League World Series.
I use Youtube TV and have since January. Absolutely zero complaints and my overall bill (Youtube TV + Spectrum Internet) is half of what it was when I had Spectrum TV and internet and all of their devices.
Hulu TV! No complaints so far. And you get BTN even in California
I cut and went to PSVue but wasn't happy with it, now I use Hulu plus with live TV and love it,
Firestick, Then i got an IPTV service . Commonly (wrongly) known as jail breaking your firestick .
You are just putting apps on your firestick . The apps get the cable channel signals .
There are many free apps that you can get channels from the US and all over the world .
There are pay iptv that are more stable and cost around $10 per month.
You get live channels, PPV events , 24/7 channels. Access to old and current tv shows. Old and new movies . I have watched many movies that were in the theater or havent even been released yet .
It seems intimidating, and i am no expert, i dont have all the answers , but ill help as best i can . Anyone who is interested in learning more , just email me . [email protected]
Hulu Live. I have 5 TVs. Two are Samsungs and run the Hulu app. 3 have amazon Fire TV Sticks. Have had it for about 2 months now since cutting the cord. No regrets.
YoutubeTV
No offense but this must be the tenth thread here on cable cutting. Search function. Enough already.
Yeah, I rolled my eyes because it’s another cord-cutting thread. But nobody is obligated to click. I could have clicked on the dogs thread or one of the “There are...” threads or something, but I didn’t. And there are even different answers here than in other threads.
It’s July, it’s not a big deal.

Why didn't they carry the British Open?
The Open
I cut the cable about 7 years ago because of cost, excess commercials, and DirectTV doesn’t work worth a shit when it rains. I only stream sports during the CFB regular season, plus I watch some of the MLB playoffs and the World Series. Have a Roku 4K TV, but last year streamed YouTube TV through a Chromecast. Picture quality was excellent, as was the sports channel selection carried. Will probably go that route again this year, despite the 20% monthly cost increase of YTTV (now $49.99 per).
We just went back to Spectrum. Dropped DirecTV Now. Their price and channel line up has changed and sucks. Our price with Spectrum is less than using a streaming service.
honestly search the board. this has been discussed approximately 98385258345 times.
You better have good internet and enjoy saving $50 for a year before you have to start paying for higher internet prices and bundling all of the streaming services together which will eventually be more expensive than cable.
Then I'll go back to cable.
I was bouncing back and forth yearly between Verizon and Cox cable before anyway due to their pricing.
For some that may be true, but I don't do multiple streaming services. My wife watches a few stations and I watch sports. PSVue has everything we need. The last Cable bill I paid was over $200/mo a few years back (Note we live in an area where there's only one choice and they price accordingly). I haven't spent over $120/mo for internet and TV since we switched.
Hulu with live TV. We get all the channels we want and it's not that much money. So far so good.
Hulu Live.
After doing the research and spending time trying out different free trials, I am settled on Hulu live as I recently also jettisoned Directv.
Wow,
Do you always make brash decisions based on emotion? That channel comes free over the air. Use an antenna for the day and then you don’t have this dilemma. IMO, NBC doesn’t have much to offer. Certainly not worth tossing the baby out with the bath water.
I love Comcast and will never abandon them just to save a few bucks.
I love Comcast
Comrade, I'm worried about your health.
I steal cable from aliens
What's the lag time on that?
I steal cable from aliens
It all depends on who owns your local stations and who retransmits the signal My brother called the other day from Texas indicating he no longer get NBC on Directv. Just this morning I tried to turn on CBS here in SE Michigan and got the message that it was removed from DirecTv. He gets what I don't and visa versa.
I went out today to pick up a indoor HD antenna to try and pickup local CBS. Where I live it is inconsistent and I was losing the picture so it is going back. They better relieve this fast. I am not paying for CBS All Access.
As mentioned above, the problem lies at the feet of Nexstar.
They shut off our local ABC station from directv on the 5th of July and it has yet to be restored.
I'm hoping they get this bs resolved soon as the college season is only a few short weeks away.
Do you have a metal roof? I looked into getting an HD antenna and some website said my metal roof would likely cause problems for it so I didn't get it.
HDTV keeps getting better and better. 4K, good audio. etc. I get wanting to save a buck but not if you get a compromised viewing experience in terms of picture/sound quality.
If you live near a city and can get a good OTA with an antenna experience with no compression of signal, that's the best but short of that, it's satellite or cable.
I like HGTV too.....;-)
I got YouTube TV and like it a lot. However, at $45/month, I am not really sure if it’s actually cheaper than what you might get from a cable company. Benefits are 1) not dealing w the cable company 2) cancel anytime 3) dvr works well and 4) i can watch tv channels on my phone
$49? Isn't it $50/month? I started off as an early subscriber at $35 and was really annoyed when they moved everyone's rate to $50. But not annoyed enough to cancel.
I had YouTube TV and it was...okay. We're in a very urban area with high-speed internet (FiOS) and it still was a little jaggy and delayed. We moved and I signed up for the FiOS + cable and it's been pretty good. I'll be honest - I'll cut the cable at some point, but every streaming service really does need a high-quality internet connection for reasonable performance and the ISPs know that and price accordingly.
I guess my general rule is when it becomes excessively expensive to have cable + internet from a provider, I'd drop to just streaming. But if you can price shop around a bit (which may not be an option for everyone), you can usually get some rate for a bundle that meets your needs and isn't demonstrably different in price.
I used to have PSVue. Pretty solid service though in my market, some of the main networks were not 60 frames per second (absolute must have for sports). Switched to YoutubeTV and could not be happier. All channels are 60 fps, loads quickly, UI is the best I've used. Best part is that in April as soon as college basketball finished, I put my account on hold until football starts, so I've saved around $250 just in the past 5 months.
YouTube TV. It’s $50/ month and carries all of the channels that I like.
Unfortunately, Spectrum has an internet monopoly in my city (NYS) so I get boned if I don't bundle
Bundled Spectrum: $70/cable, $50/internet
Unbundled: $50-70/streaming service, $80/internet
If there was a single other internet provider then I might have some leverage
I don't know how long it will take, but when 5G is available nationwide, cell companies are going to offer wireless internet service, and the cable companies will all be in trouble. Supposedly. And hopefully.
YouTube tv. Although I’m not a fan of the recent price increase.
I've been using PS Vue since 2015, I've been very pleased. Never missed a Michigan game and I can't think of any sporting event I wanted to watch that wasn't available.
Same here. Price has been increasing but $50 is still less than the $70+ I was paying with dish.
Direct tv promo
threaten to cancel in a year
repeat as necessary
should be everything you want for $60
no reason for buffering streaming BS
Buffering isn't a problem anymore (in my experience anyway), and there have been a few published stories recently explaining that threatening to cancel doesn't work to lower your bill as well as it used to. Margins for satellite and cable TV are smaller than the margins for streaming and internet, so providers are happy to let low-margin customers walk.
Here is one such article, talking about cable:
If you can't tell from the date of the article, this is a recent development, so your long history isn't relevant. Maybe the article doesn't apply to you or your situation, but it's the new reality for a lot of people.
PS Vue for 5 years now.
Also buy a leaf antenna in case internet goes down.
Google "reddit stream <insert game here>"
I feel zero% guilty for getting a free stream/license infringement for waching games that way. Especially when one considers how many times I got fucked by NHL Center Ice, that I paid for, blackouts.
