I don't understand this thinking and I see no obvious downside for fans of opposing teams like ours.

OSU hired O'Brien, right? Even if that was a horrible decision and O'Brien is trash, their administrative load just went up. That's less time for them to coordinate NIL donations from all their fans putting off trips to the dentist.

I really doubt that O'Brien is a bad coach or that he would've been a bad fit at OSU.

To those who'd say "Imagine who they'll get with all that offensive talent!" I'd say "Presumably, that's what they were thinking when they hired O'Brien." Why would the expectation be that they'll automatically get someone better on the next try?

I think it was an odd fit schematically because Day and O'Brien have different ideas in terms of what they want to do offensively.  And either they were shifting their scheme or trying to run elements of both.  The latter seems to be a problem as Ohio State in general seems to be a bit unsure of what they want to be offensively.

Whether it's Chip Kelly or someone else the main question I have is what does Ryan Day want his scheme to look like offensively.  As last year they were all over the place.

I agree...last year OSU really seemed to lack identity. It's like a kid playing Madden who wants to get better and tries to run to have a staple, but can't do it well enough to use it as a staple so they resort to the pass when things get tough.  I think Day has been informed by Meyer that you have to run the ball to beat Michigan and he tried. BoB would've brought a run-oriented game plan, but also NFL conservatism and I don't know if OSU is really set up for either. No NFL QB for Day's preferred offense, and no OL for a dominating run game.

Chip Kelly is a smart offensive mind and him and Day have a long history together, so it might be a better marriage but I seriously doubt Chip Kelly leaves a head gig for a college coordinator job. I think he wants to be out of college more than he wants to be out of Westwood.

Day was perfect vs Don Brown. Not so much since.

Urban's go to "QB fall forward for 4 yards when needed" was a huge part of his success in college. It seems to simple but it really was. Don Brown was great for stopping that. So now its on Day to find the next move. You cant recruit and portal your way out of this day. You already had a stacked roster. Oline is more important that WR by a country mile. WRs are great for the oohs and the aahs. Catch for show block for dough!

I believe O'Brien was the key recruiter for the 5* 2024 QB (Sayin?) that flipped from 'Bama to OSU late in the process.  -- kid shows as a transfer on 247 since he was an EE at 'Bama so not sure if he could transfer without sitting out.

OSU was almost certainly going to see some QB attrition anyway this spring -- they signed Sayin and took the QB transfer from KSU after the portal window was closed for Noland and the other QBs on the roster -- and uncertainty and/or a downgrade at OC isn't going to help the situation.

Is this good or bad for us? I know a lot of people think O'Brien is trash but I disagree with that sentiment.

I thought he did very well at PSU given the situation and he's spent time under Belichick and Saban. Just because a coach has had one or two bad runs doesn't mean he's trash. It's all relative and circumstances matter.

Let's not go crazy here....they are still PSU, they still had highly rated players even if there were fewer of them, and the beat 2013 Hoke's Michigan team, as his best win in 2 years. Losing to Ohio, beating a number of Mac schools, Illinois, Purdue etc...let's not anoint him as a savant.

On top of that, you're basing this off of 2 years of coaching a decade ago, when there is plenty of more recent evidence that he is just a guy at best.

He set the Texans back a decade? They were great this year with a very promising young squad and had only 2 full seasons between the O'Brien years and this year.

Also, in 6 full seasons, he made the playoffs 4 times and had 5 winning seasons. They were 2-14 the year before O'Brien and he won 9 games his first year.

Personal take: I think O'Brien is a good and overly-maligned coach.  He did great at PSU considering the circumstances, and was my personal first choice for the Lions during the hiring cycle when they hired Caldwell.  He was a consistently good coach with the Texans, too.  I'm expecting him to do well at BC and parley this gig into a bigger one.

Feels like this prooobably isnt gonna go well for BC but why not

We should be quite interested to see who OSU hires as OC. A lot of our success recently has been Mac/Minters schemes holding Days schemes in check. This will be another step in ‘the meta game’ as Brian says

expectations are low at BC, so it will be fine. He could very easily still be there in 4 years, having done nothing of note and also not on the hot seat.

This is gonna be the real key. As far as anyone can tell, Ryan Day has been the offensive mind behind it all...and who is worth risking his job for? Will he get antsy and take back playcalling?

I honestly don't think it'll matter because their schedule is super-soft...they'll probably be #1 most of the year and riding high with great stats against nobody. And then the real test will be vs Oregon and Michigan.

BOB was a weird fit at Ohio State, but he's a great fit at BC.  That's a home run hire for the Eagles, maybe they won't be an afterthought in the new ACC.

Now we wait and find out what direction Ryan Day chooses to go next.  You would think that potential OCs would be drooling over all the talent they have *cough*purchased*cough* stockpiled on offense.

Our coach was suspended 3 games during a championship season for cheeseburgers. Sometimes I read these facts and dont even believe it myself. We dont have a Bball player and perhaps a head coach because of cheeseburgers and $900 in food receipts. It has to be great to be a bullet proof school like OSU, Bama, or Georgia but you can kind of see why we may be a bit bitter?

We are talking $15-30 mil in payoffs to players. Which is fine and dandy if it wasnt sandwiched (pardon the pun) between such ludicrous rulings.

interesting move.  i know many were pushing for al washington despite lack of successful coordinator run.  i actually knew al back in the day at bc and liked him - maybe the decision makers heard about his traitorous transfer to osu with mattison!

I highly doubt that, especially seeing as how BoB was specifically brought in to do a Wink Martindalish role for them - run the show for a year or two to hopefully ease in Hartline to eventually take over the reins.  They explicitly brought in a OC as playcaller so Hartline wouldn't have to.
