OT - Bedtime and wake time

Submitted by DelhiWolverine on March 25th, 2019 at 1:26 PM

After reading a number of complaints from various members of the board re: the 9:39pm EDT tip time for the game on Thursday, it got me curious about everyone’s normal sleep patterns.

So, the questions are: what time do you usually go to bed, and what time do you usually wake up in the morning on a normal weekday?

I have young kids and my adult time begins after they are all in bed - usually around 9pm. I usually get to bed between 12:30 and 1am and I wake up at 6:10am to make sure the big kids are up and driven to school on time.

only when i'm in trial do i cut down to 4 hrs a night (well, then and a certain thursday night last week).  the adrenaline of trial keeps me going just fine.  when trial is over i'll get some more sleep.  i can't fathom doing only paperwork on that type of schedule though.  good on you, glad you are almost done.  beer frame.

11:30 pm - 7:30 am is my optimal home model

I travel on business a fair amount so that makes it highly variable depending on flight times and time zones

Mid-30's with 2 young kids, so it's usually pretty hardcore kid time until around 8-ish, then I usually have an hour or two of work and then  relax for an hour or so before getting to bed around 12 am, maybe a little earlier.  I'm usually up by 6:30.  Nothing amazing, but it works for me.  If I plan on exercising in the morning then it's a little earlier, but I can't be one of those guys who runs 6 miles at 5 am and then works the whole day.

Late 30s, 2 kids under 10. I’m 11:30-530ish. Usually average about 5.5 hours of sleep during the week and 7 on the weekends.

Mid 30's and no kids. Go to bed between 10:30-11:30. Wake up between 6:00-6:20. That's my weekday schedule. Weekends I get to sleep in.

Typically 11-5 during the week and 8 or 9 hours on the weekend. Occasionally I'll get less early in the week and then one day crash at 5pm and wake up around 3 or 4 am.

My ideal is 8 hours but can't seem to get that consistently.

51, married, no kids - In bed 9:30-10:30 and up 5:30-6:30.  I was raised in Michigan, but have lived in ET/CT/MT & PT as an adult.  I love living where I am now, but don’t like being back in ET.  Denver was my favorite place for several reasons - MT being one of them.  Live weeknight sporting events really fit my lifestyle perfectly in mountain time.

I get up by 5am and go to bed when I'm tired (or if I brought work home, when that's finished.)  Kids are grown so the "when I'm tired" can be anywhere from 8 PM to midnight.  I will stay up for something exciting (Michigan basketball) but since I usually get enough sleep, the occasional late night is OK.

I am asleep by 1 or 2 am. I get up at 8:30 and I get to work by 10:30.

I get home between 7 and 8pm.

One daughter in college.

On the weekends, I get up between 10am and 11am.

I am not a morning person.

I have a one hour commute to and from work. Its better than 1.5 and 1.5 which it would be if I left at normal times.

Thank god for the flexibility software engineering.

Holy shit with you people getting up at 4 or 5 AM! I'd rather cut down on breakfast, showering, anything to sleep later.

In bed after 11 and up at 7:45 sharp. Breakfast and the 30 second commute to my home office. Weekends I get up anywhere between 8:30 and 9:30 unless I have a DIY project going.

My problem is sometimes getting to sleep can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours.

Home office for 15 years has been sweet.

Take one ambien and one trazodone at 10 pm,usually asleep 15 to 20 minutes later. Up at 4:30am every day. I have difficulty falling and staying asleep. I went to one of 12 scheduled sleep therapy sessions. Found out my insurance didnt cover it, cost me $500 for one session. I function very well on that amount of sleep.

I try to be in my bed by 10:00, asleep before 11, awake at 6:30. If I do stay up later it's almost always on a Thursday because actually being productive on Fridays is for children.

Go to bed between 9:30 and 10, wake up at 5:30. I hate how late games are, it's hard to sleep after games and to sit around for them for people on the west coast to get prime time viewing just doesn't make sense with rare exception.

Not a morning person AT ALL, but I also love sleeping.

Married, 37 years old, no kids....

In bed every night around 9pm usually tinkering around on my laptop or watching something on the tube with the wife, but we both usually are lights out no later than 10pm.

Alarm goes off at 7am, and I am typically out of bed and in the shower at 8 (after pooping of course).

I used to be able to stay up until 11-midnight, but too be honest, there really isn't much on TV and I'd rather be comfortably lying in bed early.

I guess all of the weed helps me fall asleep too :)

People vary with the amount of sleep they need and this variation changes with age.

A simple but accurate way is to see how long you normally sleep when not using an alarm clock - Some people need a full 8 hours and others do fine with just 6 hours.

If you have responsibilities - like kids or certain job schedule you'll have to accommodate or course, but when you have an "off" day, check and see.

I love this thread because I love sleep.  I am grateful that I can fall asleep within 10 minutes almost anywhere and anytime.  My weekday schedule is 10 - 10:30 bed, 5 - 5:30 wake up.  On weekends, that normally shifts one hour later and I almost always take a 30 minute nap (one of my greatest pleasures in life).

When the 3 kids were babies and toddlers, I barely survived on 5-6 hours but always found time for naps.

I'm 53 and have an 8 yr old (no, I will never retire), so adult time starts around 9:30 - when he's (finally) in bed and sleeping.  Bedtime is anywhere from 11:00 - 00:00, we have a crap load of dogs to sort out before bed.  I'm up at 4:50 AM every day for work, with a ~75 minute drive.  I'll eat a breakfast-like substance while driving...  Makes for a long week, and the after lunch siesta is a struggle!  But it works...

I'm usually asleep anywhere between 10-12, depending on how tired I am. 2 kids that I have to drive 45 minutes to school have me up around 5:30-6. Weekends I sleep in though, at least on Saturdays. Sundays it depends on which service i feel like getting up for

In bed around 10:30, up at 6:00. Drop the kid off at school at 7:30 and to work by 7:45. On days the wife drops her off I’m at work by 7:00. Upside to that schedule is you can get home early to make some dinner, get to the gym, and be home in time to still have the kid do the homework and I’m bed by 8:30.

As an MGoDoc, I do a about a 28 hour shift every three/four days depending on vacations/other stuff in the call pool. Generally if I am at home, 11-5/530 is the usual. Any more sleep than that, I just don't get everything done I need or want to do.

No kids (yet) but that’s bound to change at some point. Mrs. Perkis and I are in bed by 9:30, I usually turn over at 10, and she’s out somewhere between 10:30-11. I wake up around 5:45 to go to the gym before work, and she is at 6:45.

Works for us. I always feel like in the morning that I don’t get enough sleep, but I could go to bed at 8 and I’d still feel the same way in the morning. The hardest part is just rolling out of bed. Once I put my gym clothes on, load the car up and go, I’m ready to start the day.

I'm ancient but drive 95 miles to work ( except when too tired and I work from home remotely) so I get up between 3 and 330 AM so I can leave by 430am and.get to work by 6am.  I leave work at 3pm then back another 95 miles home. In order to maintain this I sleep between 8 and 9 pm.  I usually catch up on my sleep bank by naps Sat and Sun.  So the game Thurs will be at 639 PM out here in CA, I might make it thru the game but if I do it will be an intense caffeine filled Friday.

Since high school my motto has been "if it's dark, my ass isn't getting out of bed unless it's absolutely necessary".  We have a toddler and I enjoy alone time for a few hours after she has gone to bed, even if said time is 11:30pm.  I have been fortunate to have jobs that are flexible and allow me to get to work as late as 10 or 10:30am.  That said, I still average in the 6 hour range of sleep per night.

Night time has always been the right time for me.  Whenever I woke up before 7am, even after getting at least 7 hours of sleep, I felt like crap the whole day.

I never would have guessed this topic would have spawned so many replies. Biggest thing I learned is I am either a freak to be able to make 5-6 hours of sleep a night work for me, or else there is something seriously wrong with me.

Well, I’m going to quit drinking and head to bed. Good night, MgoFriends!
