Orange Bowl Snowflakes: Special Teams

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

Here's the place to have some special teams discussion that might be pertinent to our bowl game.

Made me appreciate Peppers on punt returns.  Quite a few of those mediocre punts he would have run at full speed and fielded and made 7-10 yds.  In a close game like this it would matter.  Kenny Allen is the man.

That last kickoff return, devastating.

It was the kickoff coverage that cost us the game. Wtf was everyone doing? How was Glasgow the only one in position to make a tackle? Kinel was right there and looked to be doing a slow jog behind Glasgow. Fuck...

the critical kickoff - while Bama and the other top trains would have 3 five stars converging on the runner. That is the difference this year and the old "depth" that people reference with great teams - just need a couple more classes with fast & aggressive recruits. We need 85 great athletes. We will get there with guys like Metellus who stepped up big time. Thank you to Kenny Allen - a walk on who delivered the last two years.

Kickoff coverage team looked asleep on that last one, much like most of the team was all night. For whatever reason, they just were not mentally ready to play tonight, and really did not deserve the win, although they SHOULD have won anyway. Very disappointing, but team still took a step forward with their season.

A bunch of those low, short punts that Lewis caught on the run would be ones Peppers would be trying to return. Really could've used the extra yards he surely would've provided on punt and kick return

And that finally kickoff was brutal. The second guessing as you leave the endzone almost always means you're going to get tackled inside the 15. Collosal mistake. Whoever #29 was had him and just bounced off the returner

it figures that Kenny's leg was worn out and couldn't get one last touchback when we needed it most...and randomly, I wonder how many teams have returned two blocked PATs for points in the same season?

bad special teams play which was kind of flukey, (that play is almost always a disaster for the receiving team).  That's the importance of special teams.

Believe 100% in my heart if we stick FSU inside their 25 there they don't reach midfield.

It is amazing to see anyone bash Kenny Allen.

Instead, these same people defended the punter from last year who actually did lose the game on his own.

but it marks a true return to form of the Michigan Fan. You know, the ones with all the answers about why we lost a game and calling for some coach's head. In this regard, and only in this regard, it was better when we were bad - fans were almost more sensible then!
