Ohio St DC Kerry Coombs role with team changed
Ohio State football demoted defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs, giving play calling duties to Matt Barnes
Matt Barnes is the secondary coach.
--2019 hired from Maryland by Ryan Day as assistant secondary coach and special teams coordinator
--2020 given the title of safeties coach and special teams coordinator
--2021 named the secondary coach
It seems, just from watching Ohio St's defense, their biggest problem on defense is the secondary coverage. Ryan Day must see something different. We will see how things work out as the Ryan Day experiment continues to unfold.
Video of three Cleveland.com reporters, after the game last night, talking about the Kerry Coombs move. One of them's pretty animated about it: "This is a huge frickin deal!"

Their run defense has been shit as well. Not sure this changes much. Shows me Ryan Day may be panicking this early in the season.

Now we know where Frank from American Pickers went.

Is that maurice clarett?

After three games Buckeyes defense giving up:
29 ppg (13th), only Illinois is worse
471 total ypg (13th), only Illinois is worse
182 rushing ypg (13th), only NW is worse
290 passing ypg (13th), only Illinois is worse
Even their vaunted passing attack is taking a backseat to that of Nebraska, Maryland and Purdue.
It's still early, but something seems broken and very un-Ohio State-like.

i hate to back them, but they are also one of a few teams to have played multiple P5 teams. makes a difference in these types of rankings in only three total games.

Ryan Day does not equal Urban Meyer by any stretch. I’m definitely seeing a regression at Ohio State. Not sure how far they regress but I’m loving it.
September 19th, 2021 at 4:53 PM ^
I suppose you give Day some credit in that he doesn’t sit on a problem and let it tank a season or seasons.
Changes like this mid season however have risk. Looks like the 1st at bat was a fail.
September 19th, 2021 at 4:53 PM ^
I wonder if he believes this is a big freaking deal?
September 19th, 2021 at 4:55 PM ^
Just fire him then. This demotion thing is way more humiliating
September 19th, 2021 at 7:26 PM ^
Either they don't wanna pay him to go away or Day wants to humiliate him. I wonder if Coombs came back because Urban was still there.
September 19th, 2021 at 9:57 PM ^
I don’t think it’s that evil, I think it’s just that he doesn’t want Coombs to take his Cincinnati recruiting prowess to Michigan or Notre Dame
September 19th, 2021 at 5:19 PM ^
It will work out for OSU because things always work out for them. Even if they end up losing another game or two they aren’t losing to Michigan.
September 19th, 2021 at 6:06 PM ^
Nothing is inevitable, things only seem that way. If OSU doesn’t fix their D this could be a down season for them. They will have a very hard time with PSU and MSU, and maybe IU.
And yes, we could possibly beat them.
September 19th, 2021 at 7:51 PM ^
MSU has beat no one.
- NW lost again.
- Miami’s dole won was by 4 points to App State.
September 19th, 2021 at 5:55 PM ^
He's been coaching at Ohio State and still pitching for the Red Sox, that's impressive
Day must be worried about Akron
September 19th, 2021 at 5:57 PM ^
Fuck em
September 19th, 2021 at 6:11 PM ^
Seems like making a change just for the sake of making a change to appease the fanbase. Results were pretty similar against a subpar team that hasn't had much success in its history.
September 19th, 2021 at 6:30 PM ^
None of this matters Unless Michigan Hangs 60 points on the buckeyes and limits them to 100 total yards in offense
September 19th, 2021 at 7:23 PM ^
No one is limiting OSU to 100 yards of offense.
September 19th, 2021 at 6:44 PM ^
Coombs bleeds scarlet and gray, but if Fickell stays at Cincinnati (not likely) and can hire Coombs as a DB coach/co-DC/lead recruiter, UC locks down about a third of the top HS talent in Ohio. This is kinda bad for M, but terrible for OSU. So… here’s to a bunch of 2- or 3-loss seasons for the Bearcats!
September 19th, 2021 at 8:09 PM ^
What's terrible for OSU is great for UM...
September 19th, 2021 at 6:57 PM ^
ok, not too concerned about what OSU is doing at this point in the season
September 19th, 2021 at 7:16 PM ^
So a secondary coach called defensive plays and they gave up 400+ yds in the air. Must be hell of an unselfish guy to give all the defensive credits to the front seven.
September 19th, 2021 at 8:27 PM ^
I don't get it either. The secondary has not looked good with Matt Barnes coaching it. So I don't see why the promotion. I mean, is it possible Ryan Day doesn't know what he's doing when it comes to defensive coaching?
September 19th, 2021 at 7:22 PM ^
Day may wanna reconsider if Barnes' called defense is gonna give up 500 yards to Tulsa when they dont even have their best WR playing.
September 19th, 2021 at 7:48 PM ^
The Empire is crumbling. It has begun. ?
September 19th, 2021 at 8:24 PM ^
So, if things continue to deteriorate with Ohio St, and Ryan Day is fired, who will they hire as his replacement:
September 19th, 2021 at 8:50 PM ^
Rearranging deck chairs like Mike Dantoni used to do.
September 19th, 2021 at 9:14 PM ^
I halfway expect this to be “the missing piece” to the puzzle and this will immediately turn everything around for OSU. They’ll get right back to everything always working out for them.
September 19th, 2021 at 9:34 PM ^
Urban Meyer no longer lives in Columbus or works for OSU. Coincidence? I think not.
September 20th, 2021 at 12:20 AM ^
Exactly.
Ryan Day is getting his baptism into how hard it is to be a head coach.

When It Rains It Pours

Ryan Day is the next Larry Coker and I’m here for it?
September 20th, 2021 at 7:21 AM ^
Wondering too why they don't make Larry Johnson the DC. He is the defensive Line coach and assistant head coach. He has been highly regarded as a defensive coach, why not make him the DC?
September 20th, 2021 at 8:36 AM ^
That’s what I was wondering as well. LJ has been passed over on PSU and now OSU’s staffs. He can’t catch a break.
September 20th, 2021 at 11:42 AM ^
maybe he's just like Coombs, just better off being a position coach
Some coordinators are horrible head coaches, some position coaches would be horrible coordinators.
September 20th, 2021 at 8:58 AM ^
During the Oregon game the announcers mentioned that the OSU defense plays very "static". Coombs probably thought they could just out athlete everyone on the defensive side of the ball - which works for lesser teams but if you dont have movement you get exposed.
