Offensive Gameplan vs Washington

What do you guys think is the best game plan for attacking Washington's defense?

I'm personally getting flashbacks to TCU with everyone talking about how we should be able to pave this defense. I worry about us being stubborn with the inside run game when Wash inevitably gameplans to put 7-8 men in the box and also does various run blitzes, and then we get behind because drives get derailed because of it. We gotta take what the defense gives us, similar to what we were doing early in the year when defenses stacked the box against the run game so we passed with ease downfield.

If we win, we will need to post a "TCU Game Appreciation" thread.

I can't say for sure what the game plan will be, but I can say for sure that it WON'T look like the TCU game plan.

We had something like 13 Tackles For Loss against us, by Pickett's Charging directly into run blitzes.

That is a lesson learned.

I want a similar game plan that we used against Bama that included a lot of motion and playaction. The one difference for this game, I want us to use JJ’s legs at least 3-4 times a half, whether that’s for designed runs or to roll him out and see what happens. Look what that did to Bama in the second half when JJ got that big run to the right. It also opened up the running game even more for Blake to seal it.

60-40 run vs pass. TOP will be very important for the offense against Washington. We'll need a few quick strike scores to 1) keep their defense honest and 2) build and early lead and then maintain it.

If Michigan has that 2 score lead during the second half, then keep running which also tired out that Washington-D in which Bake and Donovan will have even bigger chuck plays. Donovan will get his first "house call" Monday night.

Remember, this Washington-D is ranked in the 90s so we're not playing the likes of Penn State, Iowa, Ohio Sate or 'Bama. (Didn't we win all of those games?)

I think the parallels to 97 are interesting. Playing a team from Washington with a Heisman finalist quarterback and a bunch of weapons at receiver. They'll be going up against our outstanding defense.

Michigan's well balanced offense will be the key.

1. Play a clean game—no special teams screw ups, no turnovers.

2.  Control the clock and stitch together long scoring drives.

3.  Play defense like we did against Stroud and OSU and avoid giving up long TDs. Make them earn their points.

I haven't seen anyone mention that TCU ran a 3 man front that we had no answer for regarding the run gun. They plugged the middle and LBs crashed hard.

1. Run Corum in Duo, counters, pin and pull, power, etc.

2. a lot of play action.

3. Challenge their weak corner in the passing game.

4. Run Corum and Mullins when in short yardage situations.

5. Don’t need trick plays. Misdirection- yes . But not trick plays with big downside if ball is dropped.

6. avoid turnovers and sacks. Stay on schedule.
7. get Edward the ball in space in passing game.

Line up in goal line.  Like when we went for it on 4th and 1 again Bama.  That huge Oline surge got 5 yards.  Keep doing it to UW until they show they can stop it.

Don't get obsessed with trying to outphysical Washington like you did with TCU.

If they're handing out first downs through the air...gladly accept and keep the ball moving.

I feel like the worst thing that happened was that long Edwards run...it's like it reaffirmed the thought that we could just run TCU over.

And maybe we can run Washington over, we'll see how they play us. But if they're loading the box and playing their corners off...just let the WRs catch and run. Play action and hit Loveland over the LBs.

Don't fight it. Be water.

I have no doubt, the OL will be fired up to play the Huskies. The motion and formation scheme that we saw against Bama was a work of art.  Michigan averages 32 minutes possession a game. I see this encreased.  The Sugar bowl saw the Huskies with 12 more minutes possession than Texas. That is brutal.  Both teams had 10 drives. Texas punted 5 times and Washington 3.  We need to stop 2 more drives or cause 2 FGs instead of TDs. Michigan will score more than 30 on these guys. The Pack 12 Ds are not Big Ten ready IMO.

Our Corners need to press the receivers. Oregon laid off and got receiver screened or shallow crossed.  Minter will have our guys playing outside leverage on the deep fades. Vance Bedford said they run around 8 per game and complete 40%. Stop 2 or 3 of the deep completions can make the difference.  Oregons D was awful in their championship game. I stopped watching it after  becoming accustomed to ours. There is no comparison. Even Texas front end the the long horn D are slow and lack lateral speed.  I’m excited and confident about the championship game. GO BLUE!
