Michigan under Harbaugh: 1-8 when allowing 30+ points

Submitted by Bambi on September 23rd, 2019 at 12:16 PM

The only win was a 48-41 2OT win in 2015 vs Indiana. There was also a 45-28 win over Colorado in 2016 that almost counted but even then 14 of our points were special teams TDs and one of the TDs given up was defensive TD.

The point being in 4+ seasons under Harbaugh (55 games) our offense has definitively won us one game? And even that one required 2 OTs and a game tying TD as time expired to break 30. Obviously the more points you give up the harder it is to win but shouldn't we expect our offense to be able to bail our defense out even 2% of the time?

For some context, Lloyd Carr was 9-18 when the other team scored 30 points.   Yeah Harbaugh should be better than 1-8, but Michigan football has never intended to get into shootouts.

So Harbaugh's winning percentage is worse than Carr's, despite the fact that Harbaugh is an offensive coach in an era when scoring 30 is now the new norm. Who cares what Michigan football has intended to do in the past, our past 15 years have been dreadful. Maybe we should change our plan?

You're right, this is a fine metric by which to measure a head coach. Jim Harbaugh is the worst coach in the history of Michigan football since Kipke (with Bo Schembechler close behind); Brady Hoke was the best. Hoke was even better than Jim Tressel; I can't figure out why we ever fired that guy.

Yes, the offense sucks ass we’ve seen a million of the same posts. Part of me thinks Harbaugh knows this is his last season and is headed back to the NFL and that’s why he gave up play calling duties. I’m not ready to give up on this team yet. We looked like shit last year too, and responded with 10 straight wins after the Notre Dame again. I think we’ve seen enough of Josh Gattis. Harbaugh needs to take complete control of this offense and not be a emotionless spectator. No doubt he’s lost this team as of now. Still scared as shit of the post Harbaugh era, if he couldn’t bring M back who can? No big time coach is leaving their current job for a Job you’ll get fired for averaging 10 wins.

W-L of 1-8 is 11% of the time.  Quit bitching.  Fact is Man ball is what Tressel and LLLoyd used and they didn't pull off that many routes either.

Look, Michigan is 0-142 in games in which I have not played for the team and they lost.

I'm just waiting for the next statistic someone spouts to highlight our ineptitude as a program and doesn't rationally include the pros.

We're not allowed to show disparaging stats against Harbaugh.  It's not fair.  He took us to national relevance again.

Which, btw, how as Haruabugh actually done this?  We see all these stats on how poor Michigan is on the road, against better or equal foes, against ranked teams, yadda yadda yadda, and yet, people say he took us to relevance.  I don't think getting our butts handed to us by better/equal competition is being relevant.  Michigan/Harbaugh is the butt-end of jokes nationwide.  No one takes Michigan serious.

Sure, Harbaugh recruits well....so did Hoke.

Hoke has been no different than Harbaugh, other than we have a slightly more competent offense and can put away lesser opponents.

Harbaugh 's defenses have only given up 30+ points 9 times?

Wow, Oklahoma did that 7 times, just last year!

Of course, this is just another reason they are going through the transition nightmare, so they can be a team that has a Dynamic offense and win shootouts.

What do you know.  When your opponent scores a lot of points they tend to beat you....

Everyone knows Michigan's offense under harbaugh is a plodding disaster. That is why falling behind early is so demoralizing.  It's been this way for 5 years.

After Taylor broke that 70 yard run I knew we were going to lose.

Data like this requires context for analysis.  Lloyd Carr went 9-18 over his career at Michigan when the opposition scored 30 or more points over 13 seasons.  Much smaller sample size for Harbaugh, and i’d Put my finger on our QB injuries as being a significant contributor to Harbaugh’s numbers.

This is a ridiculous analysis. Of course we lose most if not all games where opponents score over 30+.  Do you think even Saban won over a fourth of his games his first 5-6 years at Bama when he gave up about 30+ points?  Not a chance.
