This will be the thread for hot takes about the offense and offensive playcalling.

Less FGs and more TDs next time. Regardless of who the OC and / or QB we have the same style offense, they'll never run a spread or throw it outside.

Through 8 games last year, Cade had thrown for 1498 yds, 7 TDs and 2 INTs

Through 8 games this year, JJ has thrown for 1464 yds with 10 TDs and 2 INTs

Even with the caveat that JJ hardly played in the opener against CSU, this stat line so far hardly resembles the assumptions everybody was making about how much more potent our passing offense was going to be with McCarthy at the helm.

By far the more notable difference is in their rushing totals—last year through 8 games Cade had a total of 11 rushing yards; through 8 games this year JJ has 197 yds.

I don't remember many people saying our passing game would be much better, I didn't expect that at least. What I did expect, was for our running game, and offense in general to become much more efficient. That has mostly happened, especially the running game.

I think they're keeping some sort of "training wheels" on JJ until The Game, this year. Next year, I would expect the cuffs to come off entirely.

Rutger and Nebraska are bad, please practice passing during those games. Also, fix the RZ issues.

But hoooo boy does it feel good to beat those asses back to EL. GL on bowl eligibility asshats

I hope they figure out the red zone issues by Ohio State. This team can move the ball against anyone, but the red zone issues are a glaring problem. Barring a “game of the year” performance by the defense, kicking four or five field goals isn’t going to cut it. Especially in Columbus.

Luckily, they’ve got time to figure it out.

Blake Corum is a god amongst mere mortals. If he keeps doing what he’s doing, he will find himself in New York. Will he win it? That depends on what he does against Ohio State. But he can make it there by just doing what he’s been doing. He is the best player on the field almost any given week.

Roman Wilson started out the season going over the top. We don’t even do that anymore. I’m thinking the game plan is to run the ball and hit intermediate throws and our wide receivers are just uninspired and concentrate on blocking. Bell seems to be the only one who consistently gets open.

How do you know Roman Wilson isn't running downfield routes?

Seriously. If you watched on tv like I did, you don't.

We *can* see that MSU appears to be playing very safe coverage. Brian referred to this at halftime. It seems logical to me that what the coaches see in the all-22 is that MSU's defense was playing extremely soft, specifically to take away the deep ball. Not coincidentally, PSU did the same thing.

Teams still respect McCarthy enough to not let Michigan's receivers run free in single coverage. The reason is that a big play like that can be an instant TD. But even if you can't stop Michigan's running game (and nobody has so far) defenses are counting on Michigan getting into the red zone and then grinding down because once you're inside the 20 the deep stuff isn't available and they can attack the LOS.

So I highly doubt that Michigan isn't sending Roman deep; they're just using a philosophy that says "if they spend guys to take away the deep passing game, hit them where their numbers are weak." That is, of course, the running game. Which worked fine.

Where I disagree is that I'd really like them to attack the MSU secondary anyway, because it stinks, but Michigan didn't bother.

One play in the second half that I saw on replay was Roman Wilson running deep down the middle but the corner was playing soft and was able to stay close enough that he took the option away from JJ in that split second decision.  The last two games have definitely had the feel that opposing defenses are concentrating on taking away the long bomb and giving up the short stuff.  And that's fine because we are killing fools that way.  But damn, a 70 yard pass and catch would be so beautiful to see again.

Tuck losing. Beat his boys ugly.

Run the ball, relentlessly. Old school B1G football best characterized by the famous Lombardi quote: "three yards and a cloud of dust".

NB: we have a Red Zone problem. We will need to find a way to solve this problem.

This is classic michigan football.  Run all over them and pass when you need to pass.  I am very happy with the result against a rival that sees us as their biggest game.

The coaches need to get Anthony and Schoonmaker involved in the red zone with some jump balls (maybe Loveland or Clemons, too - I think both have burned their red shirts) and use reverses with Bell, Wilson or Henning. They have been too predictable but seem okay settling for field goals with the conservative play calling. It also seems like Edwards could be a much bigger weapon along with JJ’s legs. Corum and the o-line are great, but running up the middle into stacked boxes is not yielding TDs.

The WR don’t do much.  I can’t tell if it’s a JJ issue or something with them, but it’s a real problem and not just a matter of match ups or whatever sunshine people have been blowing.  The passing game does not threaten downfield.

O-Line: A+ Road paving beasts!

Running Backs: A+ Corum for heisman!

Tight Ends: A+ Schoonmaker is the only one on this team that seems capable of getting open for a pass and consistently bails this passing game out of jams.

QB: B+ JJ is a gamer and making plays, though he didn’t have a great passing game tonight.

WRs: D- Where the fuck are they?? Did someone bother telling them we had a game tonight? JJ can’t throw the ball if he doesn’t have anyone to throw to!

Passing Game Coordinator / WRs Coach (if we even have one): F- Sparty has one of the worst secondary’s in the country…what the fuck are we doing out there? The only target that ever bothers to try and get open is Schoonmaker. It’s beyond pathetic.

Offensive Coaching Staff Inside The Red Zone: F- - -

The play calling is abysmal. Holy shit it’s beyond bad. If we can’t run it straight up the middle in for a TD, we almost always have to kick the FG. What the actual fuck?

Hey, we won Paul B. back from Ol’ Tuck and we dominated the last three quarters of the game. Hell yeah baby!

But shit man, you can’t keep winning with a one-dimensional offense. If the coaches can’t field a competent passing game, at some point in the future we’ll be fielding walk-ons because no scholarship skill players will want to come here. No we don’t need to air-raid every game but damn it all, we look utterly inept if we have to throw and if the TE isn’t open, then there’s not a snowballs chance in hell. Why on earth is Jim Harbaugh so allergic to a competent passing offense??

If we piss away JJ’s talent it’s going to be one of the biggest feats of coaching malfeasance in 21st century college football.

Tuck Comin’ or Dumb Luckin’? Just like Frames Janklin, Tuck lucked into tens of millions by winning the lottery with a generational running back (Walker and Barkley).
