No deal has officially been signed yet but Michigan and Wisconsin DL coach Greg Scruggs are heading towards finalizing a deal in the next 24-48 hours

This could actually be a an upgrade as far as recruiting is concerned.

Not getting hopes up yet, but this would be one of those big time hires if it happens. I mean that is a top notch coach and recruiter. This is a big time recruiter and many said was a catalyst for a lot of the success at UC.

Home Run hire. Good work Moore.

I'm a little more bullish on Wink than a lot here, but I have to say even if there are reservations there, the moves Moore has been able to make have all been good so far. Campbell I think is a young star in the offensive game planning department, Newsome has been touted for his growth and potential since he joined the staff, Wink is an architect and he has the personnel to be able to step in and run his system like Don Brown did in '16, and lastly this Scruggs hire is the best of the bunch.

I guess one of the upsides to hiring Wink as DC is that other defensive coaches have a pretty straightforward path to a promotion in a year or two.

assume that's part of the pitch?

I think Wink Martindale is going to be a bigger draw for coaches then people are expecting.  He's fairly well respected in the coaching community and many that studied under him have been promoted to high levels. With the copycat format of the NFL, more teams will start implementing this style of defense if Seattle and LAC start having success. Everyone will put thier own twist on it, but many base principles remain the same.

If this is a guy Fickell has had with him since his Cincinnati days then this is a very big hire. I'm sure Wisconsin will have a chance to put together some kind of counter-offer, but Michigan has more talent to work with, can draw better talent, is fresh off a national title, and given that Wink is almost certainly not going to be here more than two years, there's a pretty clear path open to a DC role within the next few years. That has to be extremely enticing for anyone Moore is reaching out to.

I have to give Moore some big props here. He's taken some big body blows in the last week or two with losing both Herbert, Elston and Moore. But he's getting right back up off the mat.

Good hire. His DLs were very good at Cincinnati and even though Wisconsins last year was disappointing that isn't really his fault since he was working with basically none of his guys

Man, it must absolutely gall Fickell that after all these years he still coaches a program that's a feeder for bigger programs.  So sorry man >:)

Didn't realize this was a done deal, but deal is done. Living in columbus I cannot tell you all how big of a deal this is. Dude is absolutely a one of the top recruiters in the national and a defensive mind.

This guy has a ton of potential and can/will continue to move his way up. He is the type of dude that will probably give us two years and UM will need to do a lot to keep him or he will have the ability to be promoted.

I'm super excited about this. It's not often you can replace an Elston type with this type of talent. I chalked up that as a net loss no matter who was hired...not the case.

Big and needed win for SM.

He's pretty young so he doesn't have the experience of Elston but players absolutely love him and he has a nose for talent. Fits the mold of what UM does and isn't star struck, but finds the guys that are 3 stars that turn into 5 star freaks. And again, players kill for this dude.

I wonder if the few poor recent hires that became issues and firings/resignations in the football organization have led to a more stringent and more drawn out background check process. i.e. Shemy Schembechler is the one coming to mind, but I thought there were a couple where folks questioned the vetting process.

Seems possible, and it may be why deals sound done, but official announcements lag behind.

Seems like a good hire. Cincy had some good talent on D when he was there and working with the Jets is good too since they have a good DL and defense.
