META: Number of points to start a thread

Submitted by Julian on

I and many others believe that the amount of points needed to start a thread should be raised. That troll just showed us how easy it is to create an account and, in thirty minutes, gain 100 points to start a ridiculous thread, which caused me to start trembling for 15 seconds. My suggestion would be 1000 points at the bare minimum. Hope you guys will be open to changing this. Thanks.

I say 25,000 points minimum. Also to celebrate capitalism and the death of net neutrality, each member creates an mgowallet and a dollar is drawn for each post. But a cheap ass, one dollar post is put at the bottom of the page. Higher paid posts go to the top.

Most of the useless posts about the Ole Miss transfers should disappear in the coming days, likely replaced with similarly innane posts about something else.

As I've learned, just ignore the board with topics that sound like they'll annoy you and you'll be happy.  I'll admit that once a couple of the worst offenders were sent to Bolivia, I've found the board to be somewhat reasonable.

Man... it’s amazing how much you just forget with the passing of time. Wow. I think (not 100% sure, though) that it was the “+1 insightful” era that ended the lose a point of your own thing. Whatever happened to the system when that happened (I remember it being down for a day or two and it was cataclysmic). What a trip it’s been.

Once in a while I would take screen shots of comments if they had useful info like how to embed videos and so forth, and save them in Powerpoint.

When I look back at these, it looks like you got a point for a coment somewhere around 2009, but the ability to Pos and Neg other people's comments, and give them points or take away points, did not show up until somewhere in late 2013.  Something like that.

There have been all kinds of iterations over time on how the board works.

to weed out troll posts is have new account posts moderated for 3-6 months.  I volunteer to do this for free.  If your comment doesn't appear on the board then there is a reason.  Trolls live for the here and now of stirring the pot.

If we can weed out the peiple with multiple accounts this would solve a lot of the problem...I think we all can list multiple people who troll under a bunch of different handles. The 1 year time frame.would also stop probably 90 pct of the shit topics

I Get so upset when I see a discussion topic on the side of the webpage that I don't care about. There are an infinite amount of things I would rather dedicate those milliseconds to rather than attending to, and making the conscious decision of either clicking or not clicking on that topic. I say we abandon the discussion board format altogether and stick to draftageddons!

If anybody accumulates more than -50 (negative) points, Brian posts their email address and all other personal information he's got on the poster.

Anonymity is what makes the internet and social media the stinking shitholes they frequently are.

There is a pretty knee method to combat these thread starters...ignore them.

Problem is so many jackasses are here and either love to post IBD or some witty comment. These people are just encouraging the trolls and dumbasses to keep it up.

I feel like this is exactly the reason this board has seen so many trolls. Once this board collectively lost its shit over them it has only encouraged the behavior. If people would have just left WD, Franklin Hatchett, God, and Bando alone they wouldn't have continued their annoying behavior

with specifics.

You were better off with the post about enjoying the fireplace, with a nice brandy, while your wife decorated the tree, and your son was out caroling with the choir.

It was screamingly obvious not one word of that was true.

Raising the number of points and/or duration of participation sounds fine to me.  Another way to weed out trolls is to post an edited summary of their "contributions". The mods can then do whatever they think appropriate.

As a long-time lurker and infrequent poster here (account almost 8 years old but only 90-odd MGoPoints), I disagree with raising the point threshold too high. There are better solutions already in use in places like Wikipedia, which as you all know has its own problems with vandalism. A better idea would be to add some kind of time-based restriction(s) to the 100-point threshold. For example, an account must be 30 days old and have 100 points to make posts, or something like that. This could also be done with stepped thresholds as well: for example, 500 points/7 days, 200 points/14 days, etc.. Alternatively, here's one the mortgage-loan-officer crowd can go for: some percentage of the 100 points must have been held for at least a week or two. As I said above, there is a reason loan officers usually want 60 days' worth of your bank statements; the thought is that anybody needing to borrow a large portion of the down payment is courting trouble, so they want to see that you've had the money for some time. So maybe something like "at least 50 of the points must have been held for two weeks" could be viable. The poster's sign-up date is already displayed on every post he/she makes, so I can't imagine this would be too hard for Brian and/or the hamsters to implement. What say you, MGoCommunity?

You should have to be a member in good standing for a month.  Then you can start a thread.

Most of the bad troll threads are by drive-by accounts, often by rivals after a Michigan loss.

They won't bother if they have to wait.

However many points I have, plus 1. I don't think I've ever started a thread on any board that I didn't end up regretting. Plus, if you don't keep me in check, I'm probably going to start in-depth statistical discussions about NFL quarterbacks and Katelyn Flaherty's three-point shooting.
