If you haven't figured out by now at least some of our middling success over the past 15 years has to do with the fact that other schools, fanbases and boosters are way more invested in the success of their football teams, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm not saying that's necessarily a good thing, but it is absolutely part of the equation.

There were 23 tropical storms in the 1910's, and we were still able to deal with the Spanish Flu and WWI. If these kids can't deal with a pandemic and a hurricane simultaneously and still make it to practice, then what are we giving them athletic scholarships for. It may or may not be safe to practice during a hurricane. I honestly have no idea, because I've never experienced one and neither am I a meteorologist.

The problem is that by any measure I can think of, if it's not safe to have students go to class, it's definitely not safe to have students practice football. The fact that football is still happening despite campus being shut down very clearly says that 1) the school values football more than academics, and 2) the school values football more than the safety of those doing the football.

Now, maybe the whole thing is overblown, and it's perfectly safe to practice football during a hurricane. In that case, it's definitely safe to go to class, too, right?

On a more serious note, it does feel like 2020 is the year everyone just says "what the fuck is going on" in every American institution - politics, police, college sports, conspiracies, everything is totally batshit crazy upside down and I hope a lot of people realize how crazy this country has become.

I don't follow your logic with this statement.  So, in the time honored tradition of internet commenting, I will righteously flay you in a public place:

YOU IDIOT!  YOU THINK YOU COMMIE HILLBILLY'S SHOULD HAVE WON THE CIVIL WAR?  JUST BECAUSE GRANT BURNED THE SOUTH DOESN'T MEAN THE SOUTH SHOULD RUN THE COUNTRY!!!  WE DIDN'T MASKS WHEN IT WAS BURNING, SO WE DON'T NEED THEM NOW!!!!  WAIT, I'M FROM THE NORTH, BUT STILL...!!

(/time honored internet commenting tradition when you don't understand what was said, but just have to say something)

The hurricane doesn’t hit til tomorrow, guys. They have PLENTY of time to get in at least two more practices. They might even use the hurricane for an epic weather conditions practices opportunity. Kick field goals and throw passes in 80+mph winds!  I bet the kicker makes a 95 yarder!

seriously, though, this is batshit. Get the fuck out.

Any chance that might be because (a) it's easier to manage and shelter a group of 250, than thousands of individuals; (b) Marco is currently expected to brush Baton Rouge with <40mph winds and the threat has been decreasing; and (c) Laura isn't yet a hurricane, shouldn't arrive until Wed-Thurs (so there's time to take action), and is currently forecast to arrive with 25-35mph winds?

I just don't yet get the feeling that "lives are in danger", to quote Colonel Jessup.

What Pompano Jack said.  If that storm makes a slight turn towards Baton Rouge it hits with full force - and with no time to evacuate thousands of students, many of whom will not have transportation.  And many of whom will have parents coming to town looking for them, or having already evacuated somewhere else.

Better safe than sorry.  I can see keeping the football team around, though.  Much easier to corral a couple hundred into a secure building than thousands...

It's one thing to shelter in place. It's another to keep practicing during a tropical system. The threat of a major hurricane was never there. The threat of tornadoes are still there, and being on the east side of both of these storms, only increases those chances.

It'd make sense to practice Monday before the storm gets there, and just ride out the next couple days until Laura passes by. Better to be safe than sorry.

This is why we will never compete with the SEC.  Football is religion down there. It takes priority over everything.  Even health and safety.

Yeah? Does it bother you? Is it a problem it means more to them rather than some teams and conferences? Good for them. They at least get to enjoy some football.
