The legend of Shedeur Sanders was born tonight

Submitted by FrankMurphy on September 17th, 2023 at 2:30 AM

Hell of a game. Shedeur Sanders is legit, and so is Coach Prime.

CSU had a clear physical advantage and won in the trenches on both sides of the ball, but Shedeur basically carried the team on his back in the second half. Kid isn't just all flash and raw talent; he has good QB instincts and is clearly well-coached.

In any case, great game. Being a college football fan on the West Coast has some advantages, because it's still 11:30 pm here.

I don’t get why people need to constantly bring race into the discussion when talking about Coach Prime. My son (16) and I (47) are white. We both really enjoy what Prime is doing in CU and are kinda rooting for him as a fun second team this year. My son’s best friend (15) is black and can’t stand Prime because he says that Prime “acts like a stereotype” and is just annoying with his schtick. I don’t think there is a racial divide in whether people hate on Prime. You either like the brash, in-your-face self promotion, the swagger, the cockiness and the non-stop hype train or you don’t.

As an aide, whether or not you like his style, CU was the location for Gameday yesterday, which would not have happened with any other coach coming off of a 1-win season. He’s already tripled their prior season win total, and found a way to come back and win on double OT worhout his best player, so the guy clearly knows how to coach / motivate his players.

One of the first people I’ve heard who criticized Deion is Jay Norvell, who happens to be black. I happen to be white. I don’t know enough about Deion one way or the other to comment, except to say I’m interested to see what happens in Boulder, which hasn’t been the case for at least a decade.

It's because people brought race into it without being explicit. It's somewhat obvious to most and now we're pushing back on their attempts to pretend that race didn't influence them. Just because someone doesn't explicitly state they're being racist or biased doesn't mean they weren't. There's a wide body of literature showcasing this. Check into how skin tone impacts the amygdala for starters.

Absolutely happened. My dad would take me to Columbus Clipper games late eighties and early nineties.

There was no player only exit from the locker rooms, so all the fans would wait in that hallway for players to come out.

I had a card binder with most of the players autographs.  Brian Dorsett was my favorite and signed Acts 16:31.. if you memorized, hed sign a different verse.

One week Deion was sent down fron the Yankees.  We went and I knew he was in there. A loong time after everyone else was gone (players and fans) my dad wanted to leave but I begged him to stay. Eventually he opened the locker room door and came out with a lady friend.

I walked up and said something to the extent of "Mr Sanders I know your in a slump, but you'll turn it around".. he had a bad night that night.. dont recall the exact stat.

He took my card/s ( dont remember if it was one or many anymore) ripped in half, stated "f*** off kid" tossed the cards in my direction and walked away.

So no, I do not like him.

OL needs major work yes, but I have serious doubts that Deion is ever really going to care about that. I mean, the guy tells us with his actions all the time that he’s about the flash, and the QBs and receivers getting their’s.

I see no evidence from his past that he will invest to develop Olinemen. See if you can find a replay of last years HBCU national championship. Deion relied on deep shots and out-athleting them pretty much all game, while the opposing coach’s well coached Oline methodically beat him down the field each time they had the ball.

Deion is going to rely on big time transfers and whatever 5 star receivers, DB’s and QBs he can get.

If he does get some major Oline recruits, don’t expect them to be developed, because im telling you this guy sees those positions as expendable, it’s just who he is. He is flashy, and he will always gravitate towards what is flashy. He’s trying to build Rome in a day, and it will likely fail.

All that said, his son is very good, but also needs to eat some humble pie at some point. Look for the video of him poking a Colorado defender in the eyes.

I'm not an old white guy and I think you can separate him, the person, from his accomplishments. People do that all the time (or choose not to) with famous people, and mostly athletes. Lots of Aaron Rodgers hate on this board but you can't deny his accomplishments. You can't deny the football greatness of Deion Sanders but you absolutely can not like the guy and how he conducts himself.

FFS, he beat a very bad team that handed CU 181(!) yards in penalties. Also made some bonehead decisions and plenty of bad throws. He has yet to play a team that will likely have a winning record.

Colorado looked horrendous tonight. Pushed around on both lines by a Mountain West team (the worst Mountain West team, in fact) that doesn't have a single 4 star or better on their roster. CSU had 16 PENALTIES FOR 176 YARDS. That is unfathomable. Not to mention 4 absolutely brutal turnovers for CSU at the absolute worst times. I damn sure watched every second of it because it was entertaining as hell, but I cannot picture a world where either Oregon or USC are kept under 50 by that awful, awful defense.

Every positive comment, no matter how reserved the take, is being downvoted in this thread.  Every negative comment is upvoted.  Feels like a lot of people just dislike Colorado and aren't actually interested in the fact that they're a good team.

Sloppy game for sure.  Should Colorado have played better and won more handsomely?  Absolutely.  Did we not just see our favorite team play the same way against BG tonight?  Yes.  But are we giving Colorado the same latitude that we give Michigan?  No.  Why?  Because Deion is loud and people don't like him.

If everybody could relax and understand that, while Colorado isn't as good as the media would like us to believe, they're not a bad team.  They're probably accurately ranked right now.  20th feels like exactly where they will end up at the end of the season.  After going 1-11 the previous year, that's a massive improvement.  Deion has done a tremendous job taking kids from all over the country and putting together a solid football team.  And everyone hates him because he likes to brag about his accomplishments.  Ridiculous...

If you pay close attention, the criticism isn't remotely targeting the CU players.

They're the ones getting fucked the most by Deion's bullshit. If you're recoiling saying "what bs?" - you're not keeping your eyes open.

Putting Travis back in reeks of ego and trashy coaching.

You should ask yourself why measured criticism of observable faults in a HC make you so angry.

1. CU players playing their hearts out and deserving success.

2. Deion being a bad person and sometimes irresponsible head coach.

Both of those sentences can be true at the same time.

Hmm. Deion's not the first coach to put a hurting player back into the game and he won't be the last.

I don't know what happened on the sideline that led to that. Maybe we'll find out and maybe it will be questionable, maybe it will be atrocious and worthy of our scorn. You've already decided, that's fine.

As I said in the game thread, between CSU and CU, CSU was the one who looked like the cheap shot team to me.

The players are getting fucked by Deion?  I guess that’s why so many of them followed him from Jackson state to CU?  I’m sure they hated being the location of College Gameday yesterday. And I’m sure they hate being regularly featured in nationally-televised games that are drawing major viewership. And on sportscenter. Yeah, it must suck to be playing for a coach that takes you from 1-11 to 3-0, all while instilling a culture of confidence and swagger in a beaten down program. I get that Deion’s self-promotion can be over the top, and some of it is schtick, but I cannot fathom why some people despise him so much.

We didnt like (late career) Brett Favre or Tim Tebow. Too much coverage for too little results. We didnt beat UNLV in double OT and if we did we wouldnt be celebrating either. Its tedious listening to people brag endlessly about themselves. But I guess we have to love him and embrace him or be afraid of being labeled. What a strange world we live in.

Colorado is fun to watch on offense. Shedeur Sanders is pretty good. Prime can pound sand.

And everyone hates him because he likes to brag about his accomplishments.

His style is grating, but it might have more to do with his sketchy practices like running scholarship players off the team or illegally contacting players at other schools to actively convince them to transfer. But no, none of that matters, it's "loudness" people don't like.

The thing that you have to know about Deion is that Deion has always cared only about himself.  Although, now it appears he also cares about his kids - as vehicles to bring attention to himself.

If you told him that Shadeur would win the Heisman, but in exchange Hunter would have to be seriously injured, he probably wouldn’t hesitate to take the deal.

CU has made a lot of improvement and quickly infused some serious talent with Sanders and Hunter.

Each week seems to be a lot of drama and attention gathering. Deion actually said “keep the cameras rolling,” so naturally many people will see the hype and question it. I cant blame him for leveraging his relationships with stars to garner attention for the program, but last night reflected a fairly undisciplined culture. There was a lot of jawing and actual fighting among the players. Some of that is on CSU players and the rivalry, but something just felt unruly.

Having some players get unruly is one thing, but I’d like to see Shedeur be a calming force for the team rather than running toward a player to trash talk with the potential to fight and get ejected.

This has nothing to do with race for me....just my gut reaction to hype trains. Prime is earning $29 million this year and a bigger amount from his national advertisement haul....why do we need to do more PR for him on this site.  Sure, if he was a good character, I could understand, but at every step in his career it has been about him at the price of those around him.  Lying to high schoolers that went to his school expecting scholarships and getting courses not recognized by any university, throwing the Colorado kids under the bus when he arrived there.  It's all about Prime.

The thing is they aren’t really a good team though. They are the definition of a paper tiger. They barley beat a bottom feeder team, barely.

Nebraska sucks and turned the ball over many times

TCU was clearly overrated and not that good.

Their defense isn’t good, their Oline isn’t good, and again, they barley beat a team when they were favored by 4 scores. This is the equivalent of our 2013 Akron game. I can actually see Sheduer having a Devin Gardner-esque season once they really get into PAC-12 play.

make no mistake, this is a bad team with a hype coach and some good athletes.

I don't disagree that there are people who just don't like Colorado because of Deion. But I also think comparing Colorado to Michigan is kind of apples and oranges. Two different circumstances. Harbaugh's been with the program for 8 years. He's a built a program that made it to the CFP in the past two years. We've seen the progression and the team has earned the latitude. A "wait and see" attitude towards a first year coach who hasn't gotten to the meat of the order yet is completely reasonable.

Feels like a lot of people just dislike Colorado and aren't actually interested in the fact that they're a good team.

This is why people dislike Colorado. If you call out that they haven't beaten anyone good yet and are getting the hype as if they just beat the #1 team in the country, then you're a "hater"
