Is lack of NIL hurting Football Program

Submitted by GoBluePhil on January 19th, 2024 at 9:41 PM

I’m just curious if the board believes that the lack of a strong NIL program will hurt the football program moving forward regardless of the fact we won the National Championship.  Why are we not in on any of the big time players in the portal?  Why are we not getting our doors knocked down by players?  Just looking for opinions.

I don't believe NIL is hurting Michigan, I believe NIL is hurting the landscape of college football. It is literally a free for all right now. The NCAA wants to talk about level playing fields and competitive landscapes but right now college football is quickly becoming the haves and the have nots based strictly on how much money can be spent on buying players. It really is a mess. There's a reason all of the major sports have salary caps and until the NCAA gets this thing figured out it's only going to get worse.

I love the " regardless of the National Championship" portion of this post. Yes, if you ignore all the good things that have happened on field the past 3 years, you may have a point.

NIL is likely a factor, but the academic aspect of transferring into Michigan as an undergraduate are probably still our most limiting factor.  When a kid comes in from Stanford, and most of his credits don't transfer, there's a problem.   I'd like to see Ono get this fixed.

The top players want money. So, we are not getting the top 100 payers. But the staff does a good job finding those 3 stars, who are more like 4 stars and developing them. I think University will have to change and put money up front to attract the top talent. However, it does not always work out as TAM has shown.

OSU is pulling in studs because of money, no other reason. They have reloaded and we're taking on water. The uncertainty of the head coach is part of it. Michigan's academic standards towards transfers credits is another, and the lack of an organized NIL initiative is another part. I wish JH would make up his mind and Warde would just leave. We need stronger front office leadership that would be taking advantage of the fact we just won the Natty. We are getting no credit for it, whatsoever.

The statement "lack of NIL" is just plain incorrect.  Michigan has an incredibly strong Name-Image-and-Likeness program.  What is differentiating the Miami's, Texas A&M's, Georgia's, Alabama's, and now it appears OSU's is our lack of an illegal pay-for-play program.  The NCAA has really lost control of college football and needs to be replaced with a governance board that will lobby to establish a level playing field vs. focusing on who zoomed into a workout session during COVID or bought a cheeseburger.  It is coming, but there are going to be a lot of wild swings in talent migration as boosters learn their lessons. Watching a kid grab $1M from you and then not work for it will eventually reset how boosters approach the market.  Texas A&M has really backed off after their plethora of five stars grabbed their bags, under-achieved, got their coach fired, then eventually all transferred.  If you are going "cheat successfully", then I would agree with a model where you are paying a known commodity such as a Caleb Downs vs. unproven high schoolers. If that means recruiting four stars and developing them vs. five stars who are a coin toss whether they will care enough to develop, then supplementing by paying known talent to transfer, so be it.

You'd have define illegal, because, at this point, the NCAA has not.  You can't pay players to visit, but you can "show" what they can have if they come. OSU has restocked, apparently solved their qb problem and are bolstering their interior lines thru the portal and NIL. We are keeping a few from leaving. Half of this roster or more is going to the NFL and we aren't bringing in comparable replacements to keep up the level of play or stay up with the competition. Next years schedule will be brutal.  Texas, USC, Oregon, Washington, OSU just to start with. If JH doesn't make a decision in the next week and we don't try to get some of t hese portal kids, we could be looking at a 7-5 season next year.

Keegan said he was getting $225k-$500k this year per SI (RIP) and that is almost certainly much less than Corum, so that doesn't sound that bad in terms of keeping players.

I think it is just the inducement stuff that we are missing and honestly, you can't blame kids who want a paycheck.  As others said, we can't do that right now even if it seems like virtually every other major program is doing it.

Yes, I am in the camp that believes our NIL program should be the same or similar to the top five programs. You have to have talent. Not every diamond in the rough works out, a lot don't.

As many have said already, two main differences with NIL at Michigan:

We don't offer inducements to come here but instead take care of you once you're performing

Warde is not particularly supportive publicly but that could just be due to his resistance being much of a public figure.

There was an insider piece last week that talked about Champions Circle already having raised $5 million and Hail over $1 million.

I think our transfer portal silence is much more related to the coaching uncertainty for now

Does anyone have an authoritative listing of NIL money? There isn't any that I can find at least - other than speculative On3 estimates of worth. Please comment back with links to others.

The NCAA is going to put up a spreadsheet this year. Oh boy... that is going to do nothing but is the right idea. Getting federal oversight is even more painful, but needed IMHO. The NFL gets free development at no cost for that matter. They could possibly drive change as well. But change is the only constant. Every year is an adventure.

I don't think there is much to this type of talk other than anxiety for the time being. Once we get things settled we will likely see movement on all fronts. I would expect the Michigan portal will be active in the spring both incoming and outgoing depending on coaching changes mostly due to the windows and delay from the championship run.

The fact that Alabama is not the old Alabama says the system is changing. Michigan will never win on any system based on money under the table. We did that once. I don't think there is any desire to go back to that. Lowering any standards is off the table as well.

We just need to be Michigan in facilities and staff. We need to recruit athletes who want to do the work. Most success comes from the work anyhow, not raw talent. We are Iowa with an offense, and that is where I want to be for now (except in Hockey - where I just want to pummel Sparty any and every way possible.)

It’s gotta be either NIL or the constant “should I stay or should I go now” song that Harbaugh  sings every year.  We’ve won the B1G 3 straight years, beat OSU 3 straight years, been had a chance at a Natty 3 straight years and won 1 Natty…what school other than Georgia can come close to that?  But yet, we don’t even get a sniff from these big time players in the portal. Not only that…when was the last time we had a legit shot at a 5* in the last few years?  Meanwhile, the Fucknuts from Ohio keep pulling in 5*s from both recruiting and the portal. What gives?

When was the last time Michigan had a more talented roster than O$U?   According to 247’s Team Talent Composite - it would have to be before 2015 (that’s as far back as currently published data goes).

Brown bagging has been in style for a long time - and, though NIL is here - there’s a reason or two why certain programs recruit like they do.  It might be the scheme / system - it might be the bag - or a combination.

Many look for - or want - five star players.  Michigan has shown this season that having a more talented or expensive roster - doesn’t necessarily win all the time.

I hope Michigan can sustain its culture - and the key elements of the program - S&C, NFL schemes, development - and the commitment / character of the roster and staff.
