Juwan's clock is ticking

I'm sure I'll get negged, but this has to be said. Between the temper, the complete lack of team effort, inability to adjust, inability to teach guards to feed the post, no obvious development through long stretches of practice, and just awful strategy, he's on the hot seat.

I doubt it. If the team does not make major improvements next season, then I could see the seat getting warmer next year. This season will have to be one of steady improvement for a near .500 B1G season. May be we can reach the NIT?

Very premature.  I recall everybody wanting to fire Beilein after an injury plagued subpar season and Harbaugh a couple years ago.  That being said, I also have a few concerns after the start this season (and the Wisconsin altercation).  But he's earned time to right the ship.  Some bad luck has left the team ultra thin at PG and most of the rotation wasn't even here last year.  There's still plenty of time for this team to improve.  And Coach Howard will likely to continue to learn from any mistakes.

To those advocating an assistant staff turnover (ala Beilein), where is the evidence that Howard even listens to a staff? Saddi Washington watched Coach Beilein manage a roster and substitute effectively, is it likely he hasn't mentioned things to Coach Howard? Martelli was a head coach for 20+ years, and although he only had talented teams once or twice, he at least should have developed some ideas of roster management and substitutions.

This is Howard's show. After 4 years, we'll know the quality of coach that he is. That will be 4 years of on the job training. If this team is still a shitshow in March, if this team is still barely above .500 in March, if this team is one and done in the BTT, if this team fails to make the NCAA's, then we know, assuredly, that he's not a good coach for this program. With 3 hostile incidents, 2 bad seasons, and a downward trend, there will be enough evidence to move on.

Hunter needs to decide whether he’s going to continue playing indifferent basketball and going to Skeeps and Ricks 3 nights a week or whether he’s going to fully commit on the court and in the weight room. His act is wearing really, really thin.

yup. I'm completely sick of the guy. He has the potential to be consistently good, but he isn't. IMO, he's been in decline since his freshman year. He talks a bunch of trash and then doesn't back it up. Honestly, I wish he would have left.

For the look at Beilein and Harbaugh as examples crowd there is a big difference, those two were established coaches who came as close as possible to a championship. Juwan was an assistant in the league where coaches matter the least. For every Beilein and Harbaugh result there are 50 coaches who sunk programs. Is it premature to fire Juwan? yes, but it is not unreasonable for conversations to begin.

Juwan’s job is safe this year as long as he doesn’t cross the line again in an altercation. This team is trending toward missing the tournament. They have an uphill battle and need to finish above .500 in Big Ten play to have a chance. I don’t see that happening given they have played several tight games against what should be far inferior teams. They are poised to lose games against some of the worst Big Ten teams. If Juwan pulls a rabbit out of the hat and this team makes the tournament, I’d say he performed at level this year.

If he doesn’t make the tournament this year he is on a warm seat. If next year goes poorly as well he’s on the hot seat. Having two bad years in a row in years 4 and 5 is a bad sign because it’s entirely his roster at this point.

This roster has been poorly constructed. There is limited depth at the center and the guard positions. The team has a bunch of forwards that barely contribute. This is a problem that won’t fix itself this year, and likely won’t be fully resolved for two years. It won’t be easy for Juwan to right the ship here.

He's been a pretty big disappoint for sure. The team looks worse than ever and there doesn't seem to be much hope in sight. I'd be totally fine firing him if/when we miss the tournament this year. More than likely he will get next year and then it'll be done after that.

People comparing him to Beilein's early years don't make sense to me. Beilein took over a mediocre/bad B1G program and Howard took over an elite one. Howard was supposed to be maintain and he's not. We have a good offense in in concept that creates a bunch a good looks but he consistently has players who fail to do anything with it. We probably have more talent on the team in regards to rankings than ever before yet we can't play defense or grab rebounds or shoot 3s or do anything besides hope Hunter scores and Jett pops off.

I highly doubt Hunter comes back, and Jett will enter the draft. This upcoming recruiting class doesn't seem like it will fix any of the issues currently on the team. So next year looks bleak once again.

Logged in and surprised to see this tread is so heavily upvoted. I agree with the OP, the luster is diminishing on JH. I hope he can turn things around, but I am doubtful.

I have seen some people talk about how Beilein struggled early on as much as Howard, but there are a couple of big differences between the two situations:

-I'm pretty confident this has been brought up several times, but Beilein was given an absolute dumpster fire to work with. He had to turn a program upside down, given little fan interest and not a ton of support from the administration.

-The part that probably doesn't get talked about as much with this comparison is that you could SEE the changes on the court that Beilein was bringing. I was in the absolute minority during Beilein's early tenure that he could get it done, because I saw the massive changes in the way the team looked on the court. Howard's teams have been largely static- not great, not bad. I am very concerned that in the 4th year, we are talking about how this team, at home, is being outworked by an inferior CMU team. I also don't really know what this team's identity is. They can't shoot. The plan is basically throw it to the big guy down low and see what happens.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned.

If he had a temper and was winning, no issues. Temper+losing, bad combo. He's setting himself up for a major blow up combining the 2 that will push him out the door fast.

I get the impression Juwan is a control freak and its his way or the highway. You rarely see his assistants involved during games. They mostly sit on the bench and stand up during timeouts.  Has anyone ever seen Martelli involved during games? Ive never seen Eisley grab a struggling point guard during a game and give him a pep talk, I go to 80% of the home games. Eisley is a legit NBA point guard veteran.

You dont see him have little huddles during games with any assistants. You rarely see assistants stand up during games to shout instructions.  These are just things I've noticed, Maybe others see differently.  It just makes me question the team chemistry and roles ofassistants. Does Juwan empower his assistants or does he demand they just be 'yes men'.

This team is definitely trending in the wrong direction. If they don't reverse that in January, then the season will go down the drain.

It will be hard to disagree that the seat will get hotter for Juwan. I thought this year's roster had more promise in playing together.

Juwan has proven his quality coaching in the NBA and the end of Michigan’s seasons in the NCAA Tournament.  The OP obviously doesn’t pay attention to the important things— it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

The roster construction has been horrendous.  It wasn’t hard to see that this team was going to struggle this year with zero guard depth, poor defense and not much shooting.  I would not be at all surprised to see Juwan explore the NBA as soon as Jet is gone.

I will always back our coaches and specially guys who have such an important history here and Juwan does, but I couldn’t help but notice the lack of composure the other night. It seems odd to me too because he never seemed so hot headed on the court. I’m bummed that the team doesn’t seem to have the chemistry that has made us special, you would think his love of M would keep bleeding through, snd i hope he can figure it out. A lot of season left, and though our ceiling and floor have lowered, I’m in a “wait and see” mode.
