JUB: Harbaugh wants the “Bear Hug”

Submitted by Blau on January 9th, 2024 at 4:51 PM

Working from home this afternoon on a snowy day here in West Michigan, I tuned into The Finebaum Show and caught his short interview with JUB.

Nothing groundbreaking but here’s what I surmised:

From their discussion, it seems that Harbaugh wants to be “wanted” and took his job with SF because he and his family were sent personalized 49ers SWAG. According to JUB, that was enough to sway him to the NFL. This is the “bear hug” effect.

Additionally, he mentioned there is little-to-no connection between Warde Manuel and Harbaugh. That might be a major factor for his future decisions (uh, yeah!?)

Lastly, he cited the intangibles go Michigan’s way and the career/contract go the NFL’s way.

I don’t know, man…

JUB alluded to the $$ not driving his career aspirations but Michigan dragged their feet with the contract, thus not feeling the love. I also would bet there are situations like the Raiders where he has more front office control or at least help dictate who the GM is to ensure a cohesive relationship unlike SF.

Also are you sure NFL teams wouldn’t offer him huge contract deals? What did Gruden get from the Raiders a while back?

Nothing new. I'm still not exactly sure what this even means at this point. The President and Warde have both said the want him to stay and have supposedly given him a great contract. I assume he can get whatever swag he needs or wants. He was a hero to most even before last night and now definitely is. What's left?

Now, on the flip side, if there is someone in the admin not giving Jim Mother Fucking Harbaugh something he wants at this point, that person needs to be shown the door yesterday.

Well, hopefully Jim learned from the “bear hug” he received from San Francisco quickly turned into a stab in the back from management. You are a Michigan Man through and through Jim. Follow your heart! Come back for life!

This doesn't square with the Warde interview by Dave Revsine and Jake Butt yesterday...at all.

Warde was clear that he wants Jim Harbaugh to retire from Michigan.

That people like JUB think Harbaugh was convinced to take a job because an employer sent his kids some swag tells you more about JUB than reality. What a bunch of sentimental garbage.

1.  If the last 3 years have not been enough to persuade Warde that he needs to hug Harbaugh tightly and be his best friend, then something is seriously wrong with Warde.

2. Once you hit 60, the intangibles loom larger in life.  I would think that is true for Harbaugh too.

I like JUB, but he needs to absolutely fuck off with this bear hug shit. Everyone loves Jim except for a few stray fuckheads who don't matter. He won it all. Jim isn't some 13 year old girl who needs someone to validate their feelings.  Harbaugh will do whatever he wants and we'll accept it and wish him the best. He's a legend regardless. The end.

I feel like he's been getting it this year from the fans.  And from Santa as well.  The athletic department is a weird place.

If he decides to stay, great!  If he decides to move on, we're in a lot better shape than when he showed up and we have a title and he's a Michigan legend.  We're good!

JUB doesn’t know shit. He repeats the same nonsense over and over again that everyone else already knows. Oh and he has such an annoying voice and laugh.

The anti-Warde attitude, including the narrative he and Jim have no relationship, is fascinating to me. By every insider account, they have a positive relationship AND if it wasn't for Warde, Harbaugh would have been canned after the 2020 season. I'm not a Warde supporter, per se, but in this era of information / disinformation / I'm right / You're wrong, I'm sorta impressed to see the one guy that literally salvaged Harbaugh's coaching career at UM now be villainized for reasons espoused by the same media blowhards people claim to dislike...

I get it, but getting a perpetual bear hug from an NFL team is a risky proposition. If you don’t have the season everyone expects you to, good bye bear hug.

The way Bacon talks about harbaugh doesn’t sound right. He keeps saying harbaugh wants the “love” which sounds like something someone insecure would want. I think harbaugh just wants proper institutional support.

Send Warde packing then offer the AD position to Diane Dietz who has a lofty finance position in the B1G office in Chicago. She is a former star basketball player and graduate of Michigan.

Her career track isn't relevant to a lot of what an AD does and she's never worked for an athletic department. Her focus was law and communications. She also graduated the year before Harbaugh started here as a student, so there's no reason to think she'd want to build up new skills. She's very successful and accomplished right where she is.

Great competitor, that's for sure, and for a long time Michigan's all-time leading scorer. I'll never forget that crazy game against Illinois when she scored 45. They had a 24-second clock back then, so if you had a shooter, that's where the ball was going. The young 'uns, of course, would point out that she never even attempted a three-pointer on the court during her career. But there's a good reason for that.

If Warde doesn't give the "Bear Hug" to Harbaugh then he needs to be escorted out the door by Santa Ono, assuming the structure of the University allows for the President to fire the AD at his/her own discretion.   AD's are replaceable.  Elite coaches are not.  Harbaugh is a top 5 coach at any level. At every turn, Michigan has made Harbaugh's job more difficult than most other jobs.  Jim is the guy who can finally rid college football of the NCAA.  For example, the NCAA tries to punish Michigan and Harbaugh for violations.  Michigan and Harbaugh refuse to obey and sue the NCAA and others.  This could go to the Supreme Court where they rule the NCAA has no legal jurisdiction over College football because universities are independent entities and can govern themselves as long as they don't violate any federal or state laws.  Thoughts?

I’ll teach myself to knit and make Jack, Jackie, John, Jim, Jay and the rest matching maize and blue footie pajamas with their names embroidered in several spots.   I’ll even put Jim’s new tattoo on them in the same spot.  (He told the team he would get one if they went 15-0.)

I saw two or three interviews with Warde over the last couple of days,  In them he said all the right things, "Love Jim, want him to retire here, he has done an amazing job, etc."  He did have the dreaded trailing comment though. "If he decides he want to coach in the NFL, well...".

If you want someone you have to go get them!  There is always time for that blabber.  I hope Ono gives Jim the Bear Hug.

It's hard to say, since Jim is so insular.

My guesses are (a) he wants to feel like he can explore NFL offers and still have Michigan as a fallback and (b) he probably feels like Warde doesn't like him and isn't standing up for him toward the NCAA.

The contract is there, so it's not about the money.
