Josh Henschke: Jace Howard will walk-on for Michigan in 2020

I'm a little confused on the scholarship situation, but with DDJ transferring and Jace walking on, I think we're in good shape to have room for Josh Christopher
This appears to be good news!
This seems like a good strategic coaching decision. It also seems like a humble expression of team play by Jace.
Definitely agree, but it’s not like his parents can’t foot the bill for his tuition.
Does the employee discount come into play?
There is no employee discount.
Kids of staff and faculty get to pay full price at Michigan.
Great news ! We need a little of it
Also as Zach Shaw said on Twitter, between Howard, Brandon Wade, and Jaron Faulds, we might have some of the best walk-ons in the country
Which means the practices are going to be against much higher level players.
Until Steven Izzo gave them buckets!
Isn’t it written in most high profile coaching contracts like this that the coaches kids get to attend the school for free anyhow?
There is zero chance the NCAA doesn't view that as a scholarship. But then again, I've been wrong when it comes to the NCAA and it's decision making before.
I'll take that wager. This would actually make more sense for the NCAA to enforce instead of hundreds of other stupid rules. Thus, I can almost guarantee that it won't cost a scholarship.
No, they probably assume the coach can afford it.
So that puts us back at 12 scholarships used. Itll be interesting to see how the next week goes. Howard wouldn't have done this if there wasnt some more talent coming in. Let's say JC does come, that's 13 but the unknown supposedly is Todd. If he isn't coming then it is back to 12 and there must be someone else coming. Matt said its unlikely to be Aiken, so who else?
That's an interesting point to make. If Todd doesn't stay in the class, I'm predicting that last spot is filled by Columbia grad transfer Mike Smith
Do you know anything about him, is he any good?
He can definitely score. Put up 30+ points 5 times this year and averaged 23 PPG. Not a great 3 point shooter, but also put up 6 attempts per game
Here's his stats:

Appears hes 5'11...that would be the only drawback I can see. I kind of figured Howard would go for taller guards. We kind of had issues this year with bigger guards.
Brown. Higher rated that Todd and is also a PF.
Was referring to the Columbia transfer
I thought Brown dropped us last week.
Right now, with Livers testing the waters and DDJ in the portal we are at 11. Chances are around 50% both Christopher and Livers return then we are at the 13 limit. Now if Aiken commits tomorrow, then we need to expect either Livers stays in the draft, we may see more attrition, or Todd isn’t coming.
Davis and Nunez announced they’ll be back. The only other players who may be on the fence due to PT are Johns, Castleton, and Bajema.
I can make the case for Castleton leaving for next year but Davis, and Todd if he came, would be gone the year after. Johns I don't see leaving, but I also dont understand DD leaving either. Bajema I can see also because he got very little run and was behind a player that frankly didn't play well. Castleton is my most likely if there is going to be more attrition. He may not want to wait until his junior year to get pt.
Quite possible that Castleton is your starter in game 1.
If I were a betting man I wouldn’t put money on that. I’d say Hunter, Todd, or Davis have higher odds to start
Unless he improves a ton, I hope not. I'd rather roll with the better of senior Davis or Dickinson for a starter. Now, if Todd comes and Livers stays, I'm all about playing Todd, Livers and Franz as your posts as well.
I would like to bet against that, now
I'd say the chances of Livers and Christopher both coming are way better than 50/50. I'd but it at like 65-70% at this point tbh.
Also, I don't think we're getting Aiken. I think he's going Seton Hall or Maryland
If all things could go our way I’d say we would look at a starting 5 of:
1: Aiken
2: Christopher
3. Wagner
4. Livers
5. Todd
Brooks playing the D-Rob role off the bench, with Hunter, Davis, Johns, Williams, and Zeb as bench options.
I'd like for Bajema to play the D Rob role next year.
The chances of anyone passing a healthy Brooks for the starting PG spot has to be slim to none at this point.
Brooks....will.....start.
I think Castleton will be starting.
While I am hopeful that Todd will play some five, just about everyone in the know says that will be a very limited position for him at best. He thinks he's a three and is a more natural four. If you read the detailed piece at UM hoops you will see why. The quote was that he plays D like he has four fouls and often shies away from contact even on the offensive end. Maybe in a zone he could handle center....but it will be mostly Davis, Castleton, Dickenson, and maybe Johns. Todd has a ton of talent, but is really raw.
I know he considers himself a one and done but do most scouts see him that way?
This is great news. As it stands (with Livers), they are 1 below their scholarship limit. That would mean they could potentially add Christopher and even with Livers and Todd, they are at the limit.
Where this gets thrown off is if they get a transfer in. In this case, then Livers or Todd would have to not come or another current player would have to transfer.

Having him as a walk on is excellent. Typically walkons are 2 or 1 Star players. He is a 3 star and could see meaningful minutes in a year or 2
Yeah this is an absolute luxury for him to be a walk on...and his brother is borderline 5 star talent as well.
Aiken is going to Seton Hall. If Livers or Franz stays in the draft, UM now has room to take Josh Christopher and the grad transfer PG from Columbia (looks to be between UM and AZ).
Only person saying Aiken is going to SH is a writer for the SH student newspaper....good source.
Wrong. Sam Webb is hearing it too.
Matt said don't get your hopes up either. The timing of DD departure and Aiken's scheduled announcement are interesting but it apparently is just coincidental.
With this, DDJ, and Todd, we suddenly have plenty of room.
Definitely glad to hear this! I wonder if we can get Jett without a scholarship?
Does anyone know what the rules are about walkons? I thought they have lesser privileges but maybe I made that up in my head
I think we definitely want Jett as a scholarship player. He's a top 60 kid in the country and apparently just had a growth spurt and is up from 6'4" to 6'7" or 6"8"
Where dem "he'll never do that" folks at!
On a separate note from this, I saw where Arizona St has reached out to DDJ now. I dont know what their scholarship situation is but this might be a good sign on the JC front.
Yes, this seems like good news. Why make that decision unless there is a good chance of adding to the scholarships with Christopher and either keeping Todd or getting another point guard, as well as keeping Wagner and Livers? They have to be pretty certain at this point as to how things will work out -- otherwise just hold off on the Jace Howard decision.
