John U Bacon: Juwan Howard return more likely than not
I guess it's time to get the torches and pitchforks back out of storage from the Brandon era.
Are we not forgetting that Bacon has been wrong often and is using vague language. Not saying that JH isn't coming back, but no one knows shit. This has been proven. Time and time again.
Bacon doesn't know anything about the basketball program (or really the football program). Can we stop parroting everything he says as gospel?
My issue with whats happening is we aren't getting better as the season progresses. I mean if you want to use Juwan didnt start the season with the team as a reason the team struggled out the gate fine but then we should see Juwans impact and instead we appear to be regressing.
Why?
Its almost as if someone bet Juwan that he couldn't turn Michigan into the worst team in school history in 1 year.
Warde will justify it be calling it Harbaugh 2020, but it's not nearly the same thing.
If Michigan played a full season in 2020, there wasn't a global pandemic with people literally dying at unprecedented rates, there were full stadiums and normal time to prepare, etc.
...and Michigan went 3-9, and lost their last 7 en route to a 56-14 blowout loss to OSU.
Harbaugh would have been fired.
And oh, Harbaugh gets its an argument with Ben Herbert midway through the year and Herbert quits.
Manual trying to rationalize this in his head is asinine. They're not the same thing and give Howard another year when he got a full year is bullshit.
Harbaugh also returned everyone in 2021 and had McCarthy, Edwards and Anthony coming in. Michigan was clearly going to be improved in 2021.
If Howard somehow had some light at the end of the tunnel through roster construction, I could see it. But he doesn't. He has a roster full of guys who quit on him and the program.
It's time for Howard and just about everyone else to go.
Bring in Shaka, a completely new staff, and start from the bottom and work your way back up.
Who does Harbaugh slap in this scenario? Also, are the Harbaugh children willing to block? We need answers.
Easy answer. Ryan Day, because he has a slappable face
This year's team is Brian Ellerbe level, if not worse. Warde Manual has to go if he brings back Juwan.
This is worse than Brian Ellerbe. Even Ellerbe did not finish dead last in the Big Ten for as bad as he was.
If Howard returns, it shows (among other things) a staggering amount of self-confidence. I would very much like to hear him give (but am not expecting) a clear and cogent analysis of what's gone wrong and how he is going to turn things around.
I have no problem with "This shit works!" in an emotional moment, but I'm left wanting...a bit more.
This might be the worst i've felt about any sport's future in my 27 years of Michigan fandom. There's always been hope... I didn't love the hire, but saw the appeal. Then there was some early winning with Beilein's guys.. and then we've completely slid downhill since to depths this program hasn't seen in decades.
We aren't even competitive with the dregs of the B10, a conference that hasn't won a title in 24 years. Rutgers, Maryland, osu, msu, teams that aren't great, or even good, beating the snot out of us.
Nothing is different. Nothing new.
There is no hope for next year without an overhaul. There may be no hope even with a new coach.
I now long for the days where we blew last second leads.
The only sliver of hope is that JUB is typically wrong about everything.
BOOO
Quick...someone, anyone, tweet that Howard is most definitely getting fired at the end of this season. Equal value to JUB's tweet, and will counterbalance the negative karma.
Unfortunately, the fact that Michigan athletics are first and foremost defined by the football team's success has given everyone involved in them a decent amount of cover for a while. Michigan basketball's extreme failures aren't causing outrage, they're playing into apathy and lack of interest. Mediocrity can flourish under the cover of that.
WHY are we delaying the inevitable? Everyone on this blog KNOWS next year isnt going to be any or much better...WHY just sacrifice a entire year season and recruiting year...Fire Juwan Fire Warde!
And fire that dorky President while we’re at it. He’s useless.
I’m just trying to imagine what Beilein could get out of Cheddar and YoYo. Those two would be completely different players under him.
Yep, the only thing that can change this is a release of some secret emails (WD are you listening?) or, I guess, marching with pitchforks and torches.
What if bad basketball means we get continued good football? That's a trade I'm willing to make year over year
They literally have nothing to do with one another. Zero reason UM shouldn't have a good program in both. The only thing that prevents that from happening is poor coaching. I really have zero idea why this nonsense is repeated continually on this board.
Michigan should have a top 20 program EVERY year otherwise its a failure, We have all the resources a school could want ,anything less is failure...Fire Juwan Fire Warde
Juwan Howard 100% coming back. Basing this on how he fields questions from media. Gonna be a benefit of the doubt here, because of his health issues. Will be a benefit of the doubt year, because of his health issues.
Being a person who thought he should’ve been gone after the Wisconsin meltdown, his second meltdown on the court, preceded by the meltdown in the Big Ten tournament against Maryland. I’m not exactly thrilled with this.
Ahhhh...Does JUB actually know shit? Consulting a Uija board doesn't count.
And I will personally watch personally zero games next year if this comes to pass. There is zero rational reasons to keep JH at this point.
Let's not rely on JUB anymore. He's a decent writer and probably a nice guy, but his takes on Michigan athletics are just snowflakes.
I agree ... Except for the decent writer part.
Does anyone really think Bacon has real inside info any more, after all that Harbaugh contract BS?
I tend to agree with Bo who said Bacon sometimes has wisdom but then he will make a jackass statement. If he is right then I will eat crow, but I would bet this is a form of subterfuge, as he despites Manuel and might be a way to drum up a movement now in the fanbase, so it doesn't happen.
Fortunately John U Bacon has no idea what hes talking about anymore.
Get excited for a new coach, dudes! Because Bacon has been as reliable as late 80s Harley Davidsons, I’m betting the opposite happens
I’ve rolled my eyes at the people who constantly blamed Warde during every twist and turn of the Harbaugh situation. Every assistant leaving. I noted how he has plenty of faults that he deserves blame for and it’s not necessarily to blame him for the things he cannot control.
Harbaugh was leaving if he got an NFL offer no matter what. Our assistants were all leaving for NFL jobs if they were offered. That isn’t something Warde deserved criticism for. But this… this would be one of those things he deserves to be criticized for and another egg in the “fire Warde” basket
Fire everyone!
How can that be possible?
Remember, remember, the 7th of December,
Basketball, treason and plot.
I see no reason
Why basketball season
Should ever be forgot.
Juwan Howard, Juwan Howard, 'twas his intent
To blow up the team and the President
Three poor shooters with nowhere to go
Poor old Michigan to overthrow
By Jon's providence he was catch'd
With an open hand and burning scratch
Holler boys, holler boys, let the bells ring
Holler boys, holler boys
Santa save the team!
Ok. Now wait for Warde to actually do his job by surveying the big boosters and other folks on the industry - I cannot conceive of a “keep” response. The program is on life support and the cure isn’t arriving this offseason. If Warde won’t fix MBB, then Ono has to fix the AD.
The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.
Is anyone actually shocked by this?
I'm done with Michigan Basketball until Howard is gone...I will not watch it, comment about it, or care about it.
