John O'Neil has retired
About time.
September 1st, 2022 at 11:47 AM ^
And there was much celebration and cheering in B1G land.
September 1st, 2022 at 1:33 PM ^
Except in Columbus. Don't worry, they'll find another Buckeye slappy to replace him.
September 1st, 2022 at 1:19 PM ^
I’m turning this into an impromptu Posbang thread
September 1st, 2022 at 1:33 PM ^
Celebration and solemn remembrance of all the awful calls.

September 1st, 2022 at 6:57 PM ^
He was going to announce this at Big Ten Media Day over the phone. Unfortunately his alarm didn't go off and he...missed the call.
September 1st, 2022 at 11:48 AM ^
Retire this guy!
EDIT
September 1st, 2022 at 12:30 PM ^
Such a great example of impartiality in B1G officials - especially in Columbus.
This is a great photo example of WHY officials should be conference employees - and, evaluated after every game they call.
September 1st, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
Or just ensure that whoever is refereeing the game isn't an outspoken dedicated fan to that team who happens to work within a 2 hour drive of Columbus...
September 1st, 2022 at 1:10 PM ^
At a bare minimum, make the refs face the media at the end of the game. I have to believe they are part of a union that will fight tooth and nail to ensure that never has to happen, but its still a nice thought to have.
If you're that confident in the call on the field, you should be able to stare the cameras in the face and explain why you made the call.
September 1st, 2022 at 1:34 PM ^
Perkis, I think part of the challenge is - the officials are independent contractors. There’s no union - there doesn’t even seem to be an official structure sponsored by the conference.
The officials need to make their own travel / hotel reservations - etc. The B1G can provide for accommodations and schedule their travel - that’s an easy thing to do. But, how about a crew - that works together - reviews their game calls - together - perhaps after the game - in a hotel conference room. And, the evening before the game - they again, align / prepare - review film of how the ENTIRE officiating crew could be better.
My take - again - full time conference employees. If they want to unionize - I don’t have a problem with that.
As for a “post game” press conference - or facing reporters - that sounds like a fine idea. Or, at a minimum - A conference held “discussion” on the Monday or Tuesday after a game - with the press.
I’d welcome hearing the officiating crew’s explanation - and illustration of irrefutable evidence that resulted in overturning the strip fumble and subsequent TD in East Lansing last year.

They should be paid four times as much, be direct employees and subscribe to background checks of impartiality and forensic audits.
September 1st, 2022 at 1:36 PM ^
You forgot “Body Cavity Checks.” Full, hard a deep body cavity checks…
September 1st, 2022 at 6:16 PM ^
Now I would sign up for free but my bias background check would raise red flags.
September 1st, 2022 at 7:29 PM ^
Yes!!!
Take some of that money from the new media rights and make them full time employees and devise a system to have their work reviewed and them held accountable. Do a ranking system, with incentives with feed back from the ADs at the end of the season.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE

The craziest part of this past year’s OSU game is there wasn’t an obvious penalty missed or a flag that was thrown which shouldn’t have. If anything, we got lucky we didn’t get an offsetting flag during the skirmish after Cam Brown ripped off Roman’s helmet when Erick All came in way after Keegan & Steuber rolled up to bump Cam Brown which caused a referee to fall. I was 100% expecting offsetting penalties and was shocked they only threw one on OSU & Cam Brown.
September 1st, 2022 at 2:32 PM ^
In my most recent re-watch of that game, I was struck by several points in the game where there would have been really bad calls (like PI or some such) in the past where there was just a no call here. Amazing how a few bad calls can completely change a game.
September 1st, 2022 at 2:51 PM ^
The Buckeye DTs were moving pre snap frequently and it wasn't called- I think one of them moved every single play in the last OSU offensive series and it wasn't called a single time- While I don't blame him when playing against Hutchinson it should be called-
September 1st, 2022 at 4:54 PM ^
Elon, I believe you may need to “edit” your comment. Instead of DT, I think you meant OT.
And, on a side note - hopefully, some of the crowd noise contributed to those pre-snap starts.
Hoping our DL this season can have the same effect.

Double post 😞

Would love to send him a ripe skunk cabbage bouquet!
September 1st, 2022 at 1:46 PM ^
Is skunk cabbage a real thing? I remember a childhood neighbor at our cottage, who was a few years older than me, pointing out skunk cabbage. But as I grew older I began to wonder if she was actually growing weed.
September 1st, 2022 at 2:30 PM ^
Skunk cabbage sure is real. When ripe and crushed, it has a disgusting odour.
quote from https://www.nwf.org/Educational-Resources/Wildlife-Guide/Plants-and-Fungi/Skunk-Cabbage
'The skunk cabbage gets its name from the unpleasant odor it emits. This scent is a way for the plant to attract pollinators that are attracted to rotting meat. The scent is especially noticeable when the plant is injured. It travels easily because it is carried on the warm air that constantly rises from the spathe.'
The O'Neil skunk cabbage attracts rotting Buckeyes.

Unfortunately the worst part about shitty refs is that the alternative is even shittier refs
September 1st, 2022 at 12:41 PM ^
I'm willing to take my chances on this one.
September 1st, 2022 at 12:47 PM ^
What is the team going to do with all of those extra yards?!
September 1st, 2022 at 12:55 PM ^
Overtaking Jackass.
September 1st, 2022 at 2:52 PM ^
Not really- O'Neill was one of the worst ever
September 1st, 2022 at 11:58 AM ^
I’m here for the posbang
September 1st, 2022 at 1:18 PM ^
This is as good as TV teddy leaving. Maybe better!
September 1st, 2022 at 7:10 PM ^
Better. TV Teddy was an attention whore, but he wasn’t a petty, vindictive, and incompetent adjudicator of outcomes. He also tolerated incompetence on the part of his officiating crews. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
September 1st, 2022 at 1:12 PM ^
And the next ref I see baton-twirling, tap-dancing, or doing any other circus-like tricks, WILL JOIN HIM, ALRIGHT??
One-strike policy applies. NOW GET BACK TO WORK!

"Good riddance to bad rubbish" -- Elmer Fudd
September 1st, 2022 at 12:40 PM ^
If Elmer said it, then it was "Good widdance to bad wubbish". 😉
September 1st, 2022 at 1:34 PM ^
You are most correct, sir.
A very early version of both Bugs and Elmer. "The Wabbit Who Came to Supper" (1942). Before their best stuff, but still memorable.

All they needed was Chuck Jones to bring out their best chops, to wit:
Rabbit Fire
Rabbit Seasoning
Duck, Rabbit, Duck
and the best of all, What’s Opera, Doc?
To quote Daffy, “Pronoun Trouble”

Craig Ross, this one's for you.
