Tourney success can make a kid lean towards you over the other programs he's considering.

It's pro "don't root for conference foes in the tourney", especially conference foes in our recruiting area (Michigan, Indiana, Ohio specifically).

That being said, we already have Zeb

How do you know it will "always be true"? I can imagine a future-world where AI is so powerful and so deeply integrated into human biology that we can actually control the outcome of distant events (like sporting contests) should enough of us have similar wishes and impulses.

Just sayin'

No effect on the outcome but if that's the purpose of rooting for any team why root for your own team then?

To be a fan of a sports team is to link your emotions to the success of that team.  Caring about outcomes, not affecting them.  That is the lens under which to examine rooting interests.

You root for your own team because you're happy when good things happen to them. Rooting for rivals is rooting for bad things to happen to your team because then rivals get a leg up on recruiting, which seems kind of weird to do given that you've linked your emotions to the success of your team.

Michigan has actually had more tourney success than MSU lately so I dont think he committed to them based on that logic alone. He seemed to always be a MSU lean. At this point I just want us to land Franz Wagner and call it a day unless we have mass attrition.

For clarification, I don't think tourney results had any influence on Terry's decision, at least as it relates to Michigan. It wasn't going to be Michigan back in December when he was initially going to commit before family told him to slow it down and make sure the decision is the correct one.

There are a few talented 2021 prospects where on-court results may sway things because of relatively equal affinity for both programs.

I've found that at least in terms of football recruiting, a great season pays off the most 18 months later in recruiting. Kids are smart enough to understand that sometimes teams can get lucky, and won't base an immediate decision off of the results of a few games that could go either way. But it gets a foot in the door for the following class, and two back to back good seasons is huge.

I don't think we were ever even targeting him... not to mention I would much rather have Zeb Jackson over Terry. In state 2020 talent is weak

Good players...but Cassius Winston, Xavier Tillman, Miles Bridges, Gabe Brown, Marcus Bingham, and DeYonta Davis say hi back. And 4 of those players just schooled our dudes 3 times and are playing for a title.?‍♂️ Fact is, we don't push for in state talent. And I'm still not sold on Johns.

I think the fact that Michigan three years in a row now has made the Sweet 16 or beyond despite losing the top three-ish players each time is exactly the point. Michigan is reloading with plenty of talent.

MSU loses Goins and McQuaid which are significant losses.

I would be shocked if both Winston and Tillman are back.  Tillman is going to shoot up draft boards the way DJ Wilson did.  Tillman is by far the best pro prospect on MSU, probably in the big ten.  Guy can switch 1-5 with excellent defense, he finishes off the pick and roll and he's a good FT shooter which means he has a good chance to develop a 3pt shot (and is the kind of potential NBA teams will draft on).

Tillman should absolutely be a first round pick.

Winston should leave as well.  He's done everything possible in college.  His limitations are physical and that will always be the case.  Coming back won't help him.  He might was well start his pro career even if it's trying to make the roster in summer league.  Why wait until next year to do that?

That said, I agree that both Michigan and MSU should be top 10 teams once again next year.

Goins will be replaced by Henry (who is their best pro prospect, not Tillman. Tillman is still a good pro prospect) and Malik Hall. McQuaid will be replaced by Rocket Watts. They still have Josh Langford. They're fine there.

As for Tillman and Winston...I can tell you 100% neither will be going to the NBA. Final Four exit, National Title, whatever it is....neither is leaving. If they're going to lose an underclassman, it's Ward.

Tillman is not a 1st round pick at this point. I don't see the NBA taking a 6'8" defender without much offensive game that is not a freak athlete. If he can shoot the 3 with some consistency, then he has a shot, but he looks a decent ways off a 1st round pick to me.

Winston I could see leaving. He might slip into the first round too, though that seems like a stretch. Still, like you said, I'm not sure he can improve his draft stock with another year in college.

Ward might leave because he seems like a guy that doesn't like playing in college, but I doubt he gets drafted. He's the worst player in their rotation (due to lack of effort and bone headed plays), imo.

Tillman has a great offensive game.  Excellent finisher, excellent FT shooter for a big, which will likely translate to good three point shooting down the road.

And he's an elite, ELITE defender.  Exactly the kind of defender the NBA drools over: a guy that can switch 1-5.  His combination of block rate at 7.4 and steal rate of 2.4 are very strong indicators of length, athleticism and eventual NBA defensive success.

Buy.

Brown yes. Dude just came off the bench to light a team up in the Sweet 16. Bingham..not sold. IF he gains weight yes, kid can shoot and defend. If he can't gain weight, then no. He won't last in the B1G. Brown rode the bench this year because of his defensive effort not being where it should be. The kid is an offensive weapon. Johns hasn't shown me anything at all and I'm seeing why MSU chose to pursue Bingham harder, even if he is a major project.
