Seems like he was trying to make a joke. Honestly seems kinda like a dick move to put him on blast on twitter for a bad joke. Is it worth ruining the guys pro chances because he made a joke in poor taste? I would hope we aren't collectively that sensitive

It's not entirely clear to me who was texting and who posted on Twitter. If he was texting with a friend who knows he's not a bigot, the friend is probably going to tell him he's being a dick but won't broadcast it on social media. The person who puts this on Twitter is either not a close friend or is someone who wants to call him out as a bigot. Ergo, he's either a bigot or he's an idiot for making a bad joke to someone he shouldn't have.

Thank god he's 100% against racism and got that out front.  For a second there I thought he might only be 95%.

The whole text string is sort of what you'd expect to read from some bro-y guys from Georgia, so no surprises here.  But I also doubt he's particularly sorry about any of this.

To the people in the thread who think its just a joke and we should give him a pass:

Why are we constantly trying to give people passes and say its not that bad? That leads to pent up frustration. Why can't we just address it now and take it seriously? You're the same people constantly trying to undermine the point of the protests by talking about looting... That pent up frustration and years of saying 'hey its not as bad as you think, your feelings are wrong' leads to more extreme outcomes. Words can hurt people, lets just try to cut this shit out now instead of letting it fester and blowing up in our faces down the road.

Kap lost his job for kneeling, and Fromm can lose his job for his remarks. Actions have consequences. And part of his job as an NFL QB was to get along in the locker room with people of all races. If the team isn't going to accept him then fuck it just cut him now. He doesn't have a right to be an NFL QB.

It was a private conversation, that's why.

Had he it said it publicly, in a serious tone, fine, crucify him. But he didn't.

And as a lefty, I'm personally getting sick and fucking tired of the joke police. Comedians won't even play colleges anymore.

A joyless world awaits when woke Twitter becomes the arbiter of acceptable public discourse.

Yeah I guess I'd say know your audience then. I don't know the relationship between Fromm and this person, but they clearly took offense to it and posted it to Twitter. The private text convo isnt some unbreakable bond.

I think its really easy for white people to sit here and say come on man its just a joke lighten up.

And like I said other things lead to losses of jobs for a variety of reasons. What you say can be one of those reasons. Can Fromm come back from this? Yes he can. But he isnt granted a NFL roster spot simply because...

I also am kind of tired of hearing about 'cancel culture' as if people continuing to support things they don't agree with is some mark of toughness. You shouldn't be supporting shit you don't agree with. If it turns out your favorite restaurant is funneling money to ISIS do you keep going there because 'cancel culture' and their burgers are really good?

Its somehow meant to be an insult to a younger generation that actually considers morality and principles when buying shit. People can have different principles and that's fine. Do you.

You are not wrong, and I actually edited what I wrote about 2 minutes after writing it because I purposely try to avoid online discourse.  I come here for fun and sports and I waded into culture\ politics on this thread against my better judgement.  Carry on good sir or madam.

So is your position that shes out to get him?

If someone wrongs you, are you not allowed to be upset about it a year later? Like I said I don't know the relationship between these two people but they don't seem like that good of friends to me. She was initially taken aback by the text.

I hate having to used all these fucked up examples, but take a look at Bill Cosby, did all the people who accused him not have a leg to stand on because they didn't report it immediately? Are they allowed to be upset by his actions years later? Maybe at the time she didn't feel comfortable and now that the country is willing to look at racial issues is a better time to release the text? Who are we to say?

Could she have handled it better? Probably, but that's beside the point. The private text convo isnt some blood oath between the participants.

He made a joke to someone that obviously either didn't get it, or was offended by it. Not offended enough to make it public immediately, instead releasing it during a time of significant racial and political strife for maximum impact.

As for your thoughts on cancel culture, the smartest thing the founders did was grant us nearly unlimited free speech. No other country on earth has it. That free speech is a safety valve for extremists, nutters, and average people alike.

Take it away and I don't think any of us will enjoy how these people then choose to air their grievances.

I missed the detail showing the conversation was released a year after it happened - makes it look like it was vindictive against Fromm in that case (If the other party was serious about addressing the racist aspect, why not take it up with Fromm direct - and sooner?)

I think it’s weird cancel culture is an insult. As if  supporting things you don’t like makes you more of a man. Not sure how that’s tied into free speech? Am I “cancel culture” cause I don’t listen to Mike Valenti and think he’s a dumb asshole? He’s free to say what he wants I just won’t listen to him which supports him getting paid millions for his hot takes.

I find it odd that somehow this thread has turned into what an asshole that girl is for releasing the texts. I mean fuck me I guess.

I pointed out why she may be releasing it now. Same reason me too became a movement. When there’s a spotlight on it, people tend to come out of the woodwork.

I think there’s a difference between comedians and Jake Fromm. All I’m trying to say is, why are a bunch of white people in this thread claiming oh it’s no big deal. Of course it’s not a big deal to us. We’re not the butt of the joke. I do see a few minority posters in this thread calling him a racist. Have a little empathy is all I’m saying. Some people don’t like it. Who are we to tell them how to feel?

As someone who tries his hardest to be even leftier than you, I concur. Comedians are SUPPOSED to make people uncomfortable. Otherwise it's all just this:

There's dumb racist jokes, and there's smart race-based jokes. Sometimes it's safer when the person making the fun IDs with the same group (Larry David or Tim Whatley telling Jewish jokes (post-conversion), Chris Rock on black people, Russell Peters on South Asians, etc) but if you're equal opportunity in your offense, go for it. In my scientific opinion, people clench their anuses too tightly about comics. You know when someone means it and when they don't. (kinda got the feeling Jake F meant it, fwiw, but publicizing private texts is shitty)

The part that gets me is that he thinks the problem is that he implied that he is an "elite white person", not people of color should not be able to own guns and exactly what that implies.

Yeah, as a pro athlete and (sort of) celebrity, you need to be hyper aware of anything you put in a text or tweet.  Clearly whoever he was texting wasn't that close of a friend, otherwise I would assume she'd ask for a clarification, or say something like "hey, that's not a cool thing to say" and move on.  Definitely seems like she was searching for some attention of her own by putting him on blast like that.  Either way, powerful lesson learned for Jake Fromm today.

As an OSU fan, of course the biggest joke in all of this is Kirby Dumb backed his very average good ole' boy over Justin Fields. Thanks Kirby!

I've been on this blog for 7 or 8 years. Never really post, but use to love the content and discussions. I'm now convinced the majority of posters (over 50% at least) have racial biases.

The problem with a lot of the people participating in the various memorials and tributes to Mr. Floyd is that many are just doing it due to the greater social issue involved.

If he had died in a less controversial way (yet something still sudden and tragic - such as a car accident), would these people still care?  It would still be just as devastating to his family and friends, yet hardly anyone outside that group would have said a word.

My heart goes out to his family and I truly hope that their hurt will heal - but it just seems like so many figures are exploiting his death for their own agendas.

100%. My first lesson for my government students (11th graders) is that everyone is biased including me and that they need to understand someone’s bias and how that affects their understandings and thoughts. They also need to question everyone and everything.
