What would be "pure" to you? Like, you've apparently been watching UM football since at least 2010 (when you signed up here). Unless I've missed something, college athletics haven't demonstrably changed in the intervening 9 years.
People can have their own reasons for consuming entertainment, but save me the morality play about the purity of sports that have been money-focused endeavors basically since they were created.
They are and the players should be paid... that was my point... and I'm older so I've been watching college sports since the late 70's.
What got me this year wasn't just the payment crap it was the fact that colleges can watch whilst Men rape women and boys, both the athletes and the support staff and nothing real happens...
What got me is that coaches can watch as grad assistants or players die due to gross negilgence and little or nothing happens...
The money thing.. that's just icing on the cupcake.
Do you really think that the higher level schools aren't already paying players? You've been watching college football so far, the only difference would be it would be in the open. Do you really think Daxton Hill committed to Michigan, flipped to Alabama, and then flipped BACK to Michigan without some form of illegal payment? Kids are going to schools where they're going to acquire the skills necessary to compete. I can tell you with 100% certain that on average Michigan State usually offers players more money than Michigan or Ohio State, but Michigan and Ohio State will win more recruiting battles because it gets players to the league easier. SEC teams have the traction and will always have the traction because of location and proximity to elite talent.
And in terms of the rise and fall of dynasties... We've had 3 teams play in the last 4 national championship games. Georgia, Alabama, and Clemson.
Anyone else find it sad that people are talking about paying college athletes (who receive full scholarships) and at the same time there are college sports that don't even receive enough scholarships for all their players? You've got guys/gals that might by getting money for books. They work as hard at their sport as any other athlete AND they have to pay for their education.
I don't because there are lots of players already getting paid under the table. It is even more rampant than we knew.
No one is forcing those other guys/gals into playing their sports, they do it because they want to. If they don't want to, do something else.
Same argument can be made for any sport. If they don't like going to school at zero cost to them, then don't play football or basketball.
I love the line of argument that instead of trying to make the situation better for everyone, student-athletes should just be happy with the status quo because maybe someone else has it worse.
By this logic, should the NCAA just stop trying to get more money for their content because they already get a ton and, like, professional lacrosse leagues don't get any TV deals and they still compete.
The difference is they are forced to in football and basketball. At least the ones who are most likely to go pro. Rashan Gary for example... if he doesn't play college football what are his options. We knew when he was recruited that he was likely an NFL talent. His only option is to play college football for three seasons, due to NFL rules. So college football is the NFL's bitch. Zion Williamson could have played NBA this season, but he can't, college basketball if the NBA's bitch.
Soccer... let's see if you want to pursue it professionally, anyone telling you that you have to go to college for 1 to 3 years? Hockey? Track? Water polo? Nope... nopity, nope nope nope. So the same argument can't be made for those other sports.
Zion Williamson wasn't there to play school, he was there to support old white guys in Indianapolis for a year whilst also developing a bit so his game was more polished for the NBA. Pretty much the same for Rashan Gary I would bet. That's the difference.
This is a terrible argument. Having a top flight football and basketball program brings in a tremendous amount of money for the school; field hockey, gymnastics, etc., don't come anywhere close to that. If you are good at something that people put a high value to and are willing to pay for, you typically make more money than those doing something that is less valued, regardless if you work just as hard at that.
No one ever says that Harbaugh or Beilein should make the same as our tennis or soccer coaches, despite the fact that all are working real hard to be as competitive as possible; why does it have to be different for the athletes. Title IX does obviously play some role here, but rules can be changed.

However, you're forgetting that these are primarily educational institutions, places of higher learning; did they teach you that at Ross, or just the "bottom line"?
So...your argument is that coaches should all be paid the same, athletes shouldn't get compensated at all, or something else?
If you're going to attack someone else's argument, at least have something substantive behind your own beyond "OMG, look at this guy with his understanding of how supply and demand works. Not me, I only want to visit a blog that exists because of college sports, not think about the system that allows me to derive entertainment from the efforts of college athletes."
Yeah I posted this type of information previously... and very few seem to agree with me; very "blue collar" perspective. I think we're in the minority here.
I'm assuming you're advocating that Jim Harbaugh and the swim coach get paid the same amount then?
