*IF* Harbaugh fails... Brent Venables?
First of all, I'm pulling for the team to turn things around and have a great season. Crazier things have happened (Lloyd's last yr, post-App St/Oregon, for example). But in the event it doesn't work out.. how about Brent Venables?
He's the best defensive mind in college football today. He's the only DC in the country who seems to be able to stop Elite modern offenses (in CFP games, against equal'ish competition).
He's only 48 yrs old. He's been the #2 man at a top-5 program (Oklahoma/Clemson) for the last 20 yrs; since he was 28. He knows how it's done at the highest level. He's an outstanding recruiter -- Rivals.com's National Recruiter of the year in 2016. He's got enough experience, 3 or 4 times over, to be ready.
He could probably bring one of Clemson's co-OC's (Tony Elliot-the more proven offensive mind *or* Jeff Scott-the elite recruiter) with him.. probably replacing himself as the highest-paid assistant in the land.
There's been talk about Clemson, Oklahoma over the yrs.. but he's been a college assistant coach for 26 yrs and I've never heard so much as a rumor about him doing anything below board (would you blame Don Brown if some Michigan booster gave a kid money?). I think it's completely irresponsible to baselessly say anything to the contrary.
Dabo, Kirby Smart, Lincoln Riley, Ryan Day -- the HC's at 4 of the top-5 programs had zero HC'ing experience before assuming their current roles.
And he publicly stated that he would've been interested in the Texas Tech HC'ing job had it been offered last yr. What other HC'ing jobs he's been offered in the past idk (he has, Dabo confirms).. but he makes more than half the power-5 coaches in his current role.. so it makes sense that he'd wait for a real big one.
I personally think he's the next Nick Saban. I think he'd be able to recruit / put together a staff of great recruiters. I think he'd be able to find solid, modern offensive minds. I think he'd be able to develop players. I think he'd be able to run our program with integrity. And I think he'd make elite defense (against elite competition.. sorry Don) the backbone of our program.. ala Saban.
What say you?

Can we stop with this stupidity please? We are on the same path to Tennesseeville. I'm not a fan of rotating coaches every 3 to 5 years.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:28 PM ^
I’m not fan of mediocrity, so if a coach can’t get it done it’s time to find someone else who can.
Venables would and should be on the top of the list if a coaching change is made.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:33 PM ^
Thank you Baughs!
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:29 PM ^
Then dont hire multiple coaches who cant get it done in a row...
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:31 PM ^
Hate to point this out, but we've been there for at least a decade now... where have you been?
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:22 PM ^
I wish he was actually an option. It just doesn't make sense for him to come here right now.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:22 PM ^
I'm not on the fire Harbaugh train yet, but hypothetically if it happened I would think Bob Stoops would be my first choice. He is probably going to be looking for a new job when the XFL folds again.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:27 PM ^
Why Bob Stoops over Venables? Would you prefer Stoops over Lincoln Riley bc of his HC'ing experience?
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:37 PM ^
I mean in a ideal world I would take Lincoln Riley over Stoops due to the age difference. Riley is also not the same as Venables, Riley has already taken a team to the playoff and looks poised to do it again this year possibly. He is already proven to me, but let's be honest there isn't anyway in hell Riley is leaving OU anytime soon unless it's the NFL. I would prefer Stoops over someone like Venables because he does have the background of success that would help with recruiting and ran the same kind of speed in space offense we thought we were getting this year his last several years at OU.
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:10 PM ^
I guess..
It didn't seem like Stoops stepped down from Oklahoma because he had a burning desire to continue putting in the work it takes to head an elite program though, did it?

You posted this as comments 26 times in other threads, and now you're making it a new thread.
Obsess much?
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:23 PM ^
Where in Iowa are you?
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:26 PM ^
I live in one of the small towns near Iowa City, I work in Coralville, for the UI Hospital.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:27 PM ^
Ah sweet. My brother lives in Walcott
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:30 PM ^
Nice, I'm on the other side of IC, about an hour from there. He's closer to the Quad Cities. Nice area.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:35 PM ^
Wow.
He really DID post it 26 other places on MGoBlog.
And along the way he also picked up just enough upvotes to get to 100 points so that he could start his own thread. If nothing else, he's a persistent little bugger, isn't he?
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:23 PM ^
If you took the time to read one thread you’d see this has been discussed over and over again.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:29 PM ^
He knows. He's the one who posted it over and over again.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:24 PM ^
Good hot take , 8/10, will read again
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:27 PM ^
Are you his fucking agent? Posting this in 10 different threads was enough.
Great 1st thread. May you never see 100 points ever again.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:28 PM ^
If I'm moving the needle on discussion and getting the best guy for the job actually talked about by fans... I'm doing a good job.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:34 PM ^
This comment is dumber than posting this same thing again. What “needle” are you moving? This is worse than the posts asking what fans think should be done about the offense. Sure it’s a message board, but you thinking that bringing up the person who’s name comes up for every coaching spot ever is going to do anything is idiotic at best.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:57 PM ^
You're talking/thinking about him. = success.
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:03 PM ^
Right, because the fans are the ones who make the hiring decisions ..... you are an idiot
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:34 PM ^
Idk if you're a "history buff" or not, but google "Mgoblog/Dave Brandon" for me.
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:38 PM ^
Can you google "Texas Tech/Brent Venables" and show me where Venables publicly said he'd be interested in the head coaching job? Seems like you have time to reply to everyone else but not actually provide evidence to back up your claim.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:10 PM ^
Still looking for it. The later, louder comments seem to be the only ones coming up.
If you're saying Texas Tech and UofM are comparable jobs in any way though... you may be right in 10 yrs.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:13 PM ^
How could you construe anything in my comment into me suggesting that Texas Tech and Michigan are comparable jobs?
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:25 PM ^
In that case I'm gonna make a thread that says we should have Larry David has HC.
Moving the needle on Larry David to UMich.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:37 PM ^
No, you're not doing a good job.
You want to affect change? Get on the phone with Warde and convince HIM. We, on this board, can do nothing, only Warde had any power. Your incessant posting of the same thing over and over and over....27 times now...accomplishes NOTHING.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:58 PM ^
This website/board is largely credited for getting an Athletic Director and Head coach fired in the last decade.
Consumers do actually matter, believe it or not.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:41 PM ^
The AD was fired largely for being excessively rude to a fan via email. The fan happened to post here and the website publicized the emails. If Harbaugh emails something similarly incriminating and MGoBlog gets a hold of it, then the website has some power.
The message board did not will Brandon and Hoke out.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:34 PM ^
Every fan could have a tattoo of Brent on their forehead and he would still not even be called by Michigan.
Find a candidate that ever worked in the Big Ten.
September 23rd, 2019 at 5:45 PM ^
Why is working in the Big10 necessary? Do you realize how insane that is?
"Tell Belichick to f*k off and stop calling us please!"
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:06 PM ^
I am telling you what is actually going to happen when/if Harbaugh leaves. You can like it or not, it will happen.
You're sitting here trying to will a guy who is not ever going to be our coach into the job via the magic of message board comments.
September 23rd, 2019 at 4:00 PM ^
It's either his agent or Venables himself...OOF there is some quality content here lately.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:27 PM ^
Sold. When can we bring him on board?
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:28 PM ^
Inexperienced HC with no connections to the region. Brilliant idea.
Not.
This board is the carcass and dumb people are the vultures.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:29 PM ^
He's done a ton of recruiting in the MD/DC/VA areas. Areas we should most definitely be adding to our talent targeting list.
How much more coordinating experience does he have than Dabo/Kirby/Lincoln and Day did before taking HC'ing jobs for the first time? More than all 4 combined? That's your answer, right?
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:33 PM ^
It's not like Harbaugh has been killing it in the state of Michigan or Ohio anyways.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:42 PM ^
Does he even recruit anymore?? Or is he now the HC-Emeritus?
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:28 PM ^
Im with Curious George, everyone step back from the ledge.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:30 PM ^
FFS dude - can we stop with the Brent Venables shit already?
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:42 PM ^
Is there a reason you don't like him? Or do you just want to type-yell words?
September 23rd, 2019 at 6:35 PM ^
He's not coming here. Brent Venables : 2010s :: Bud Foster : 2000s
Even if he wasn't anchored to Clemson, SC. He wouldnt come to Ann Arbor
September 23rd, 2019 at 7:33 PM ^
what do you base any of this on??
it is absolutely astonishing how well some of you can read minds and know for certain things of which there is absolutely zero evidence to support.
September 23rd, 2019 at 3:32 PM ^
Does Venables have ties to UofM? Did he play for Bo? Will he glory in Bo, Yost, and Crisler? Is he a Michigan Man? If no to any of these questions then no, he's not qualified.
