I don't think Ryan Day knows why he's losing to Michigan

Submitted by RealElonMusk on November 21st, 2023 at 5:50 PM

I think that Day and people around him are so convinced that OSU is better due to their talent that they haven't studied what's changed in the Mega game between Michigan & OSU.   Plus, I don't think Day & company want to change.

This is what Day said when asked, "What's changed in the rivalry to swing it to Michigan the past 2 yeasrs"?

It's fortunate for Michigan that the way OSU lost to Georgia in the playoffs last year validated Day's strategy.  I'm sure he said, "look how Georgia killed U of M in 2021 and we had Georgia beat" (OSU had an over 90% win probability with 2 minutes left in the Georgia game).

IMHO what's happened is that Harbaugh intentionally build a team designed to beat OSU.  It took a lot of years to get the lines & proper defense built up but it has now arrived.   OSU doesn't want to change and what worked for Michigan in 2021 and 2022 will work again and again until OSU makes a change.

Harbaugh has made so many changes in the last couple of years.  Remember how beat down guys like Winovich, Bush and Gary were by the Ohio State game?  He brought in new coaches, toned down the intensity early in the year, started holding back big sections of the play book, fired back in terms of shenanigans with signals and scouting, etc.  At some point they pissed him off and he decided to focus everything on this one game.  They still have the superior talent but they haven't proven yet that they can handle 100% Harbaugh.

This is true as well. OSU will have matchup advantages, especially when factoring in CB2. I would assume Minter has schemes to at least mitigate this issue.

As far as OT, I'm not as confident that Moore will as successful scheming to reduce liability there. 2023 Harbaugh would but **waves hands at the general injustice of it all**

I think he’s high on his own supply. If the dude really thinks he lost the last 2 years because of signs then hes deluded himself (on the flipside, does he therefore think OSU the only reason OSU won in 18 and 19 was because they stole our signs?)

I have to think he’s playing into it for his own job security. He cant possibly be that dumb and arrogant right?….right?

People undervalue matchups. Some teams are just built to beat other teams. When Don Brown came to Ann Arbor, he came with a defense designed to stop Urban Meyer's read option offense. When Day came to Columbus, he brought an NFL-style passing offense designed to stretch Don Brown's defense. When MacDonald and Minter came to Ann Arbor, they brought an NFL-style defense designed to stop Day's NFL-style passing offense.

We will see how it goes this year, but in 2021 and 2022 it was 100% a case of Michigan being designed to beat OSU.

Ooof, the high stakes of this game are palpable.  Please dear lord men, beat this clown Saturday. I/we don't want to hear anymore little brother excuses from this loser of a coach.

Cryin' Ryan '3rd  Base' Day is John Cooper 2.0.... bottom line.

Besides that Michigan KNOWS they can beat ohio state..... and they KNOW they can be beat.    Psychological advantage is huge.

Well, Urban had a good spread offense and Harbaugh then hired Don Brown who had a history of success defending it. Then Urban changed to a pass heavy offense. Harbaugh then ultimately changed defense coordinators to adjust to that. Day's defense the last 2 years did not successfully adapt to Michigan's offense. So far this year, you can see how other teams have adjusted their defense to attack our ground game. I suspect OSU will as well.

JJ is, IMO, the key to combating that. I hope he's healthy and "on" this Saturday.

Ryan day convinced his fan base that in 2 years ( 3 Ls  I think he decided to start the clock after the 2021 Oregon) Ohio state had ONE bad half of football, they believed him.. 3 Ls, 1 bad half of football.

he's selling ocean front property in Ohio and he has buyers...

I’m just hoping at this point that Ohio really believes their own BS that Michigan only won because of sign stealing and that Saturday will be a very rude awakening for them.

He's got better players (by rankings) in the aggregate, but doesn't hit it big with nearly as many three-stars as we do.  He doesn't need to.  And, his talent is kind of lumpy -- always more NFL-grade receivers than one can realisitcally throw to, but some real weaknesses in the trenches on both sides.

"There are guys with scars..."

Yep.  Some guys took a down-and-out NFL team, and made them a Super Bowl team only to lose to his brother.  Then he came to Michigan and has been shit on every time he does something good. But don't worry.  He doesn't have any scars...no...he's not motivated at all.  Just keep telling yourself that, Ryan.

Why?  S&C.  Coaching with NFL experience.  Adjustments.  Game Planning.  Scheme.  And, commitment of the players and staff.

The Bucks have a talented roster - but, how has that talent really developed during their time in Columbus.

It comes down to quality of execution in The Game.  Look no further than Sainristil’s play against Stover.

Might just be that we brought in Ravens' DCs and defense to specifically beat OSU and we got to the game without an injured starting qb for approximately the 1st and 2nd time in the last 20 years.

Man, I'd be so confident if Harbaugh was on the sideline.

Jim on the sideline or not, he can't execute the plays for the players.  Thats on them, and they know what to do.  One thing I'd be concerned about is play selection and clock management.

Hopefully home field advantage plays a factor.  The more intimidating the crowd is on mccord and the oline the better.

If Ryan Day wants to single out a coach - it’s Harbaugh.  An assistant / staffer - Poggi.  A player - Aidan Hutchinson.

Why?  Culture.  IMO, all three were instrumental in the changes at Michigan that have been manifest in the past three seasons.
