How do all the Matt Campbell Stans feel about this quote?

Not a Campbell stan, but the discourse around "goals" is so dumb. The goal is to win games as often as possible, for all coaches, at all levels.

"Our goal is to win a national championship at Iowa State": well that sounds unreachable and dumb.

"Our goal is to be the best team we can be": well that sounds defeatist and weak.

Great, now everyone's mad for no reason.

On the one hand I agree, we get too caught up in  "winning championships" as the only barometer of success...

...on the other hand, what Campbell said was monumentally stupid. It's not like you're only allowed one goal as a team. And it's also not like "competing for a Big 12 championship" was some crazy unattainable goal this year for them.

you normally (unless you are alabama) have to win the conference BEFORE you can win the MNC

not sure how he doesn't get that.

at a place like iowa state you basically have to win EVERY game and be impressive doing it to even get to the playoffs.

Yes, the entire discourse is dumb. However, the idea that coaches can't turn off the "smartest person in the room" coachspeak for a single minute is just as asinine.

Matt Campbell could have simply said "Yeah, we're disappointed to not have the opportunity to play for a Big XII championship, but we're going to leave everything out on the field for our remaining games because /*starts rant about character*" instead of "DUMB REPORTER THINKS HE KNOWS MY BRAIN I'LL SHOW HIM"

How is it "defeatist and weak"? He's just indicating that he's focusing on process goals instead of outcome goals. That seems pretty reasonable.

The real issue is the lack of communication that he's delineating between process goals and outcome goals. The reality is that everyone should be focusing on process goals, and only using outcome goals as a "north star" to keep their process focused in a certain direction.

I agree.  Goals are great, but it's the process that sets up a team for success.

Remember Dave Revsine questioning Harbaugh, "Coach, how do you define success?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWORmeywxeA

Harbaugh basically gave the answer that it's about the process and results will follow.  "Improvement will lead to success."

the discourse around "goals" is so dumb

Agreed.  Along with so many other sportstalk cliches, which are less about actual sports than a proxy for pundits & fans to self-flatter, expressing how personally 'tough' or 'high-standards' they are or whatever

Not a Campbell stan either but he's unquestionably done one of the best coaching jobs in my lifetime at Iowa State.  Though I can see how this might upset some of the "unacceptables" who may have touted him for the job here, as this conflicts with their view of themselves

I will admit I have been a huge stan of Campbell, but this made me sick. Not a good look at all.

I still think he is a good coach but the luster has worn off.

The luster has worn off from every coach this board has fell in love with. We need to hire candidates that go 6-6 and 5-7 like MSU does. That is the key to success. Hope a candidate does something at a middle of a road school they havent done at their previous middle of the road school.

The key to grumbling for a new coach on this board is confirmation bias:

1. Pick a coach who won a big game that day, is having a hot streak or at most, a good season.  (Make sure the game is over, lest we have a Mike Leach vs UCLA 2019 situation.  Or, in that case, just switch to crowing for Chip Kelly.)

2. As soon as they lose, switch to someone else who won big recently.  "At least they can win a big game / beat a rival / etc"

3. Repeat

That pretty much sums it up. I remember before the season started people on this board wanted Campbell no matter what. Some were saying pay him 10 million if he wants it to get him here. People couldn’t believe I was still skeptical about him and thought he still had a lot to prove before making that kind of leap. Well he has his best team ever and he’s 6-4 this season and 0-5 against his biggest rival. At least it has out to test bringing him here

Still don't understand how so many people were willing to wash away the years of success Harbaugh has had for the one or two years Campbell displayed. It was the coaching equivalent to everyone's favorite player is the back up QB, except our starting QB is a multiple pro-bowler who hasn't been able to break through in the post season and the back up is a 2nd rounder who got drafted because he played one good season against so so competition.

Glad this year has illuminated how much of an anomaly last season was.

I don't remember the term being used immediately after the song came out though. Yes it's been 21 years, but I distinctly remember having to look up the "we stan" usage within the last few years. It may go back further, but my guess is that it's Gen Z that took the usage from Tumblr/Twitter/Vine to widespread usage among Millennials (like me) and older writers online.

"Stan" made it into a horrific Cricket phone ad played incessantly during football games, putting it on my radar.

However, even in context, I could never understand its meaning. To quote the commercial, "Here's a comment: We stan!"

The only reason I ever learned is because Stan has been defined on the board somewhere else earlier this year. Perhaps we need a Stan thread and make it a sticky.

Hahaha you could add along with that a lot of the “afaik” and all those things along with it. I’m 35 but like I said, don’t don’t do social media and have no idea what people mean. Besides lol and lmao, I’m basically useless with the meaning of shit like that.
insert the progressive commercial with the people turning into their parents. Apparently I’m already there.

"Our goal is to be the best version of ourselves"

Translated means

"We didnt reach our goal of winning the Big12 champtionship so I'm go to move those goalposts in a bit and state our goal was to try real hard and do our best at all times.  You know, like the Boy Scouts."

Right up there with Butch Jones "champions of life" comment.  I get his reaction was not the best but not sure what he is suppose to say?  Maybe something like, we want to win championships but I am proud that the team has stuck together.  Same premise, but acknowledges the disappointment.  I just hate some of these questions from sports reporters.

"so coach your team just lost and you suck, how do you feel about that?"

Makes Harbaugh's "win or die trying" sound much better.  Although I thought it was a good answer at the time.
