How did you feel about the zebras today?
So did anyone else feel like for the first time in a while the refs were not out to get us today? Yes they had another phantom holding call on a running back this time negating a touchdown but overall it seems they have gotten the message. I guess only time will tell if this is just a 1 time thing or things will change long term, but I felt really happy during the game seeing the majority of calls being fair.
What is the feeling from you all, did Ward lay the smack down or am I just imagining things?

Fuck ‘em

I thought they did better than we've seen in a while. That hold on Tru was terrible, but I didn't find myself going in and out of apoplectic at the officials all game. Sad that that's the new standard this season.
October 6th, 2018 at 8:29 PM ^
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
I’ll wait until I see a few games in a row including rivalry games before I believe anything is different.
October 6th, 2018 at 8:38 PM ^
Yeah, my first thought was they were just being ok today so they can screw us harder the next few weeks. I am trying to not be negative though..fuck
October 6th, 2018 at 9:11 PM ^
Yeah it was nice to see our D actually draw some holding calls this game. They still missed a few, like in the first series when Winovich was held on the roughing the passer call.
October 6th, 2018 at 11:01 PM ^
The roughing the passer was pretty bogus in and of itself. Personally it didn’t look like a foul to me. The official walked over to the QB to see if he was hurt before throwing the flag is was really got me.
October 7th, 2018 at 7:53 AM ^
I wouldn't say it was bogus. I knew it was roughing as soon as Bush hit him.
October 6th, 2018 at 8:31 PM ^
Less incompetent than normal I guess? Is that the B1G standard?
October 6th, 2018 at 8:31 PM ^
We should have more rain delays. Fewer TV timeouts was so nice!
October 6th, 2018 at 8:44 PM ^
I'll put money on that being the theme of Brian's recap
October 6th, 2018 at 9:50 PM ^
Didn’t seem like fewer to me. Didn’t we end first half with TD, tv break, XP, tv break, 14 seconds of clock, halftime?
October 6th, 2018 at 8:39 PM ^
It was better today. I doubt very much that it had anything to do with anything anyone at the University did. It was a different crew
October 6th, 2018 at 8:40 PM ^
Funny how people act after they get called out.
October 6th, 2018 at 8:41 PM ^
Didn't see it, but Brandstatter and Dierdorf were both convinced Bush should've been tossed for targeting. Any validity?
October 6th, 2018 at 8:44 PM ^
His facemask went into the qb's chest on a slighty late hit but he mostly just shoved the guy down. It wouldn't have been the worst targeting call I have seen but I don't think it was targeting.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:08 PM ^
I agree. Form tackle. Head was up, face mask into the QB chest. I'm not sure any part of him actually hit the QB head, just the violence of the hit made his head snap
October 6th, 2018 at 9:31 PM ^
Looked the same to me as the one Hudson got ejected for. I'm glad it didn't get called this time as I don't think that kind of play should be targeting
October 6th, 2018 at 9:36 PM ^
This was my thought! It was the exact same hit that Hudson made, only not called this time.
October 6th, 2018 at 10:48 PM ^
Let’s just say, I am happy they didn’t review it. With us being Michigan, they probably would have called it targeting.
October 7th, 2018 at 12:25 AM ^
Just rewatched that play and I don’t know why it was roughing the passer. It wasn’t late: just one step.
‘’That being said I feared a targeting call live.
October 7th, 2018 at 8:43 AM ^
1. It wasn’t late, so it shouldn’t have been roughing the passer. In real time, it was a split second after the ball was throw.
2. His primary contact was to the chest and his arms were in front of him. His face mask made contact with the player, but his arms extended as he pushed the player to the turf. There are similarities to this play and the call on Hudson a few weeks back. This wasn’t targeting according to my interpretation, but the officials have no idea what targeting is either.
3. I believe that flag was thrown because of how hard the hit was and because Hill laid on the ground for a few seconds. Aggressive defenses are going to have a call like that from time to time. This shouldn’t have been a call, but I’d rather have a guy like Bush flying around than developing a passive attitude.
October 7th, 2018 at 10:49 AM ^
That wasn't even a roughing the passer. He didn't even take another step after the ball came out. Also, no forceable contact to the head or neck area, it was completely clean.
October 6th, 2018 at 8:43 PM ^
Better.
October 6th, 2018 at 8:52 PM ^
Anyone catch the horrible unnecessary roughness call on Michigan on the early 2nd half kickoff. 2 refs standing right next to the hulabaloo, break the guys up say a couple words let the players go back to their benches. Dude ref runs in from 40 yards away and drops a flag. Just terrible terrible officiating.
Best part was the immediate on obvious makeup calls by the rest of the crew that put Maryland back where they should have started.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:00 PM ^
The chart humbles them.
October 6th, 2018 at 10:35 PM ^
The Chart. The Chart. The Chart.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:00 PM ^
you already know if that was a michigan player he wouldve been ejected for targeting immediately
October 6th, 2018 at 9:00 PM ^
They also messed up the holding/targeting play where the play shouldn’t have counted, the ball should have stayed in the same spot, the down repeated, and the player tossed. They tossed the player and moved the ball backwards. Just incompetence top to bottom.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:11 PM ^
They made the correct spots. Offsetting penalties replays the down.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:23 PM ^
this didn't make any sense to me, if they let it stand where only we got a penalty, then it would have been a 30 yard gain with a 10 yard holding spot foul, so a 20 yard gain. So when the add a personal foul on the other team, we just replay the down and lose the 20 yards? how does that make sense? Couldn't we just decline their penalty?
October 6th, 2018 at 9:32 PM ^
I completely agree. Was a crazy result. We got screwed by the Maryland penalty.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:00 PM ^
Not saying it was intentional, but I swear it seemed like many of the calls in our favor came when they had no impact - such as def pass interference on our successful TD pass.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:01 PM ^
My sense is they were likely told to even things out for the good guys. This way the numbers even themselves out and in a couple weeks the refs can back to business as usual.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:09 PM ^
I think we drew 1 or 2 holding calls which was an improvement.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:12 PM ^
They were better than usual. I was delighted to see that we actually drew some holding calls.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:18 PM ^
The black stripes complimented the white stripes nicely.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:23 PM ^
The less i hear about or from the refs the better.
Let'em play
October 7th, 2018 at 6:17 AM ^
Sorry, replied to wrong post
October 6th, 2018 at 9:24 PM ^
They made several bad calls. But it seemed that the bad/missed calls went both ways.
They took a M TD off the board with a terrible phantom hold. But they also did not flag Devin Bush for targeting.
They also made a bunch of good calls.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:30 PM ^
On the one hand, they called holding for once on our opponent. On the other, they made another phantom call.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:33 PM ^
I am currently in Africa and I killed an actual zebra tonight. Just because. Because Northwestern...
October 6th, 2018 at 9:33 PM ^
Noticed they were calling more legit calls...but it’s Maryland. They’ll bring us more in line by making the calls on teams Michigan mops the floor with so it will appear they’re not an outlier but I’m waiting out to see if it carries over to the stronger opponents.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:37 PM ^
Penalties today:
Maryland: 12/107
Michigan: 6/52
October 6th, 2018 at 9:53 PM ^
Yea, but at least half of those were false starts or illegal formation penalties for MD
October 6th, 2018 at 11:33 PM ^
I attribute the illegal formation call to Brian Cook's excellent scouting.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:39 PM ^
Still suck. I know one of the back judges. Whenever I see him again, gonna ask him about the absurdity of the calls that happen in the B1G every game.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:46 PM ^
They’ve set the bar so low, I can’t give them a shoutout when they’re slightly less incompetent.
October 7th, 2018 at 12:51 AM ^
Especially when yet again they massively botch a RB hold - this time costing Michigan a TD (on a drive that ended up stalling for a FG)
They were less awful today. That’s all they get from me.
October 6th, 2018 at 9:49 PM ^
I think my biggest cheer of the day was when Maryland got called for holding in the first half...
