Has Beilein passed Izzo?

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on

Since 2010, Beilein has a 5-2 record against MSU, a big ten title, a Wooden Award winner, and a National championship game appearance. We lose Burke, Hardaway, and McGary and Beilein has this team poised for another Big Ten title and maybe more.

There's winning, and there's winning (and losing) with class.

Izzo is a winner. But every time his team loses, he becomes the biggest whiner.

Who knows how many titles Coach B. will win, but I am sure glad he represents Michigan.

To compare the 2, I think it is only fair to look at the time since Beilein has been at Michigan.

I would have to say that John is at least on the same level.  I don't think there is a better coach in the Big Ten.  Beilein has out recruited Izzo over the last 3 years (including 2014, so far).  He is winning with one of the youngest teams in the country (the last 2 years).

Which guy would you rather play for.

Izzo has --

1 National Championship

6 Final Fours

7 Big Ten Titles

3 Big Ten Tournament Titles

11 Sweet 16s

7 Elite 8s

Let's not get carried away. Izzo's reccord since he's been at MSU compares favorably with any damned coach in the country. I agree in principle -- I wouldn't trade Beilein for Izzo right now, even if that's mostly because I find Beilein a lot more likable -- but suggesting that Beiliein has "passed" Izzo is kinda ridiculous.

i hope they both stay at their respective schools for a long time. this is feeling like it could be something big. i dont see either school backing down. dont want to compare it to bo/ woody, but it doesnt get much better than this. cant wait for feb 23 already, and really hoping for btt matchup.

I wouldn't go that far, but I will say I'm happy Beilein, not Izzo, is my team's coach. Beilein is the best coach in the country right now...for Michigan.

Like Dantonio taking advantage of the RichRod/Freep mess, Izzo's timing right when the Ed Martin scandal was blowing up helped a lot, especially with respect to recruiting.

One can't really say that Beilein has passed Izzo or is better simply because the record isn't there to back it up.

What I will say, however, is that I would rather have Beilein than Izzo.

I think in terms of accomplishments, Izzo has the upper hand. However, in terms of where the team is now, Beilein holds the edge. Izzo's got a hard road ahead of him. Next years' MSU team will be downright bad unless Costello, Kaminski, Trice etc. can step up.

remember when UM beat OSU a couple years ago when our front court of morgan and novak matched up against sullinger and thomas.  how the hell we won that game i will never know.  but i do - and his name is John Beilein.

Head to head yes no doubt he does have a slight advantage but over a career no. Izzo has accomplished more than Beilein might ever do plus Izzo can still add to his resume. Ask again in 3 years and mayb we can talk

Look at the talent that has come through MSU... Shannon Brown, Kelvin Torbert, Jason Richardson, Zach Randolph... Izzo didn't know what to do with them. Save Torbert pretty good NBA players, lost at MSU

No. Even if he may be as good a coach, he has a long way to go to reach the level of success Izzo has achieved. Rings and things matter. But give the man time, because I don't think we'll be looking up at MSU's program anymore.

...but I think that Beilein was furious at one ref in particular (and not the other two) about his having looked right at one of them, and he back at Beilein, as Beilein was trying to call a timeout.

Beilein was pointing his fingers at his own eyes and seemed to be saying, "We both know that you saw me; I looked directly at you and you were looking in my eyes..."

Yes.

Overall, no. Izzo has more Final Fours and the almighty NC.

I'm with others though. I'd take Beilein over Izzo all day. This dude went to the tourney with walk ons at PG, Novak, Stu and Anthony Fuckin Wright.

Here's what I love about JB.  He's always cool and under control.  He only goes ape-shit when it's needed.   And tonight he went completely ape-shit over a missed foul (I think).  I guess what I'm saying is that I see a lot of other coaches constantly whining, shouting, cajoling the refs (see Tom Izzo).   JB rarely does this, at least overtly.   It was a pleasure to see him lose his shit on the sidelines tonight.  He pushed it to the edge and did not get a technical, probably partially due to the respect he garners from the stripes.

No. He has done an incredible job and I'm glad he's out coach. I would say the job he's doing is among the 10 best coaching jobs of anyone in the country. But he has been to two final fours and has no NC to claim yet. The fact that Izzo does makes me want to puke, and I personally think Izzo is actually overrated. So I would say that I think Beilien is the better coach, but national and local perception on the whole is that Izzo is a god. I just look at all the highly ranked players that Izzo has had who have done nothing. His guys are mostly mediocre in the pros. So many five start guys that stayed four years and never had marked improvement. And yet five star guys continue to have MSU on their short list. Kentucky plucks most of them even though they also seriously underachieve, but that's a one and done factory where the kids must just not care about development or championships.

I just know that I wouldn't want ONE coach in America over Beilein...and I mean that. I would've said the same thing after a loss.

I love Hoke, but a piece of me will always want Harbaugh. But I wouldn't want Coach K at Michigan over Beilein.

Not saying he's better, just saying he's the best for MICHIGAN.

He's been great, but come on.  Both guys have excelled with less than top 10 talent.  But in terms of the body of work, Izzo is still ahead.  Coach B. drops a B10 title plus a Final Four and perhaps people should change their minds.

Next year, it gets ugly. Payne and Appling are gone, and probably Harris. They haven't seen a depleted team yet.

Izzo required sanctions and the gift that was Brian Ellerbe in order to build a program. Beilein needed no such leg up. He's also a classy dude as opposed to a whiny, half-leprechaun/half-Frankenstein.
