Harbaugh hires Don Yee as agent per Schefter [Ed: Months ago, this was a news drop]

[Ed: As reporters quickly pointed out, Harbaugh enlisted Yee months ago. The reason you're hearing about it on the eve of the Playoff is Pete Thamel thought it could hurt Michigan to drop a Harbaugh-NFL rumor today. It's embarrassing for Schefter that he let his name be attached to it. --Seth]

It was Stan Humphries. Harbaugh played the Chargers five times in his career, and only won twice, but one of those two games was in the playoffs and denied the Chargers a repeat appearance in the Super Bowl.

To make matters worse, Harbaugh himself took the ball into the end zone late in the fourth quarter, with the game out of reach. Allegedly, he said "they can eat cheeseburgers" after spiking the ball and doing an awkward dance.

Humphries never had another playoff appearance. In fact, the franchise has yet to return to the Super Bowl.

I can see why this is a non-starter.

I get freedom of press and stuff but I wish there was a way to enforce not maliciously using the media to affect a goal while basically out-right lying or using seedy manipulative techniques. It sells clicks and keeps the hate steeping so it’s not going anywhere but I really don’t like this kind of stuff.

Hire you want...but I find it kind of weird that Harbaugh does things to undermine his own program (I'm not saying this is...I know nothing about the guy, but the timing sucks).

Coaches are obsessed about every detail, every disadvantage, etc. - yet Harbaugh routinely does things that...well, they don't make things ant easier.

Not going to overreact, it's just strange. Coaches go through great lengths to get every little advantage or detail...they're paranoid, it's bat shit crazy sometimes.

But Harbaugh continues to do stuff that makes it harder to recruit, or gameplan, or focus, or whatever...or again, maybe not harder, but not easier.

I guess that's just what you get with Jim. The good vastly outweighs the, headscratching moments, but this is another one to add to the pile.

If you didn’t follow BS media you would know that most of this isn’t Harbaugh’s doing. He hired this agent weeks ago to negotiate with Michigan, as he has previously done with other contract talks.

Also is it his fault that every year media push the narrative of him going to the NFL? Would you rather he lie like Saban and say he’s not going somewhere and then show up at that place the next day? Because that’s not Harbaugh. But he’s also not going to continue talking about it.

He said he would be around as long as Michigan would have him. Then Warde screwed around and made him feel he wasn’t wanted. It doesn't help that Warde and Stapleton are friends and Warde does not like Harbaugh. If Warde was gone, I think Harbaugh would have already signed an extension.

But as it is, the Chargers have an opening and it’s enticing because he does want to win a Super Bowl. If Michigan wins a championship, I could see Harbaugh leaving. With that said, Warde has left the door open for Harbaugh to go. There’s a reason why Harbaugh says he would stay as long as Michigan would have him. Luckily Harbaugh and Santa Ono get along well which may help the situation.

I do believe Harbaugh would love to come back but I also believe if he feels pushed away and he accomplishes the goal of a championship that he could move on. Especially if the Chargers decide they want to hire him and from what I have heard he’s number 1 on their list. They’re the first team I feel like is a potential problem for Michigan.

Look, Harbaugh wants to go back to the NFL.  He is going to go back to the NFL.

Let's just hope we get a National Championship out of him before he does.

I see Jim getting a framework in place to make a decision.  He may be looking to give Sherrone Moore an opportunity to be the HC here.  Jesse Minter may leave but the chance to work with his dad again could keep him.

Either way the future is brighter with any coaching retention we can get.  That really has been the case for the last 2 years.  Lot's of staying and keeping the core group together has been a strength.

This has been the best group of players and coaches in my lifetime (60 yrs) and I am thankful for these 3 years of excellence.

Let’s just win this dam thing and then give Harbaugh a goodbye parade. I’m sick and tired of this shit! Every dam year he flirts and then says he won’t do it again. I don’t understand the draw but I guess he’s got some itch he can’t scratch. The nfl has changed so much since he left I’m not sure he’s gonna be a  fit there anymore. But I’ll cheer for whatever team he lands at. Then when he gets chased out in 5 years I’d welcome him back as the AD.

Whatever he decides, just give the team your full, undivided attention for the one, possibly two games you have left.

If Harbaugh does indeed head back, then in some small way it’s almost relieving. Going through this NFL carousel with him every damn offseason is exhausting, and you can’t tell me it doesn’t hurt recruiting in at least some fashion. The NIL situation probably hurts more, but there is at least one recruit, likely more, who Michigan has lost out on solely because Harbaugh couldn’t guarantee him he’d be his coach by the time he showed up on campus.

Right now there are maybe 5 coaches that can make that guarantee. It only takes two bad seasons—sometimes just one—for a coach to get the boot. Plus, aside from a small handful of blue bloods, most coaches would gladly move on to a better program.

Ryan Day is one loss away from getting fired. If Lincoln Riley can't field a decent defense, he's getting fired. If OSU offers Lane Kiffin the job, he's gone from 'Ole Miss.

Coaches who guarantee they'll be on campus by the time recruits show up are Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, or liars. Jim Harbaugh is not a liar.

Ryan Day has been one loss away from getting fired since losing to Michigan in 2022.  When will that one loss actually push OSU to get rid of him?  I would rather like to see him stay, but he does some shady shit (allegedly) that pushes the NCAA and B1G to heavily come after Michigan.

-If this hiring was done weeks ago, then it is bullshit reporting it now.  A clear, undeniable, and irresponsible attempt to derail Michigan.

-Sure, Harbaugh wants to win a Super Bowl, but I have a suspicion that the fact that talent acquisition in the NFL is more fair than college has something to do with it.  Saban may or may not be the greatest coach in college, but he is the greatest at talent acquisition.  It’s easy to win the 125 cc class championship when year after year you’re able to show up with a 500cc disguised as a 125 (motocross metaphor), and the ruling body (NCAA) does nothing about it.  I read somewhere that Alabama has more 5 stars (18) than the entire Big 10 (17).

good analogy. i've been using cars to try and describe the same thing.  when saban had to compete on even terms in the NFL....mediocre.  similarly, when urban had to compete on even terms in the NFL....horrible.   if we win tomorrow that's like your old 5.0 mustang outracing saban's porsche  911.   that is simply being out-coached, which is exactly what happens every time we beat ohio.

Alabama / Saban have only had the most talented roster (according to 247 Sports Team Talent Composite) in seven of the last nine seasons.  In the two seasons that Bama wasn't ranked first, it was ranked second.

I trust in Harbaugh and the staff to "coach / scheme".   The key will be execution.

Bama is a good team with a good staff, I don't question that.  I believe Team 144 is a good team with a very good staff and has a tremendous culture.   I'm not counting any chickens - but, I also believe in Team 144.

Oh - regarding the "car analogy" - isn't it an interesting coincidence that a certain team's parking lot was filled with power cars for years before NIL ever existed?   And, when a certain team (Texas A&M) signed a more highly ranked recruiting class using NIL - that another coach (let's just call him Nick Saban) - called them out - and, IMO, essentially said - "Hey - they're only getting those players because they're offering them more benefits (money) than we are."   So, what had the Tide been doing all those years?

About the agent - if Harbaugh engaged Yee several weeks ago, perhaps the perspective he sought was - "What is your opinion of the clauses in the contract?"

Finally, I may be "out of the loop" - but, I do have one question.  Which current college coach(es) - who have been NFL head coaches - had a winning record as an NFL head coach?

Once again, it appears to be a nothing cheeseburger.

First, Harbaugh is a current college coach with a winning NFL record. Second, what idiot would sign a contract worth somewhere north of $100 million without at least consulting an attorney? Not even our beloved, highly functioning autistic coach. This is a nothing burger, and Seth rightly pointed out, it’s just an attempt to hurt us. Go Blue, it really is us versus everybody.

Regarding Harbaugh as a current college coach with a winning NFL record - I agree.  And, it should be noted that Saban (for all he's done at Bama - with the nation's most talented roster - and, lol - without any inducements) was not a winning coach at the NFL level.

So, my point is - if Harbaugh can win on Sundays - because of scheme / game plan - the odds are - he's still pretty good at it - and, I'm hopeful Team 144 plays to their potential on Monday.

Your point about consulting an attorney for a "very significant agreement" - also is something I agree with and - the intent of certain entities (reporters / NCAA) seems to reinforce the point that they don't like Jim.   (FWIW, I am glad Harbaugh is Michigan's head coach and want him in Ann Arbor until he retires.)

Honestly, I want him to win and pass the torch, preferably to Sherrone Moore. He's a lightning rod and he always will be. The ncaa does not want him coaching at Michigan. It can't be more crystal clear at this point. It would be best for the program for him to win it all this year then return to the NFL with the team in very capable hands.

No college coach draws more attention than Harbaugh.  And, why is that?  There could be a variety of reasons.  But - the focus on revenue sharing really threatens certain entities significantly - and, those entities are numerous.

IF there's a true revenue sharing model - which Harbaugh advocates - and Harbaugh has already stated that he would "take less if the players get something" - the impact isn't necessarily NCAA specific - but, it would impact every athletic department in a similar "class" - that could be Power 5 conferences - or teams / conferences where revenue sharing would be noted.   So, other Power 5 programs - impacting coaches / staffs salaries - atheltic department budgets - etc.

A revenue sharing model would need to address ALL sports at a college / university.  So, Title IX has implications - non revenue generating sports need to be addressed in an equitable manner.  This is a complex issue.  It would be incredible if the B1G conference actually took a leadership position and tried to solve this problem.

So - who night not like Harbaugh's position?   It seems like almost all the other coaches, their staffs, and athletic departments that are more focused on their own wallets than involving student-athletes in the solution.  Chip Kelly recently made comments similar to Harbaugh's.  Besides Kelly, I don't know which other coaches are publicly on this revenue sharing bandwagon.

Yee was hired weeks ago and has been involved in the Michigan contract talks.

Thamel involved in reporting an old story which, when taken out of context, appears to have negative implications for Michigan. And the "story" is literally dropped just after midnight on New Year's Eve, the day before the CFP. Can't make this shit up.

How can this hack get away with this?

My daughter is a journalism major, and I keep telling her that an entire college course could be taught on the ethics of Signgate. And it never seems to end.

If the 'Harbaugh to the NFL' speculation is on this board fairly regularly, you don't think it's also been on the players' radar for.....years? Every player has to know it's a possibility, unless Harbaugh has told them he's not leaving. I can't imagine a story about Harbaugh hiring an agent is going to register at this point. But I do think someone...ahem, Alabama or Ohio State......is trying to distract us from the task at hand with this timing.

Why would you think Schefter would he embarrassed by this? Hes in the news breaking businesd for the NFL. His Michigan ties don't matter. He could have used his Michigan ties when all the nonsense broke earlier but to my knowledge he just fell in line with his ESPN/NFL media folks and reported garbage like they did.

I still do not believe any NFL team is going to want Harbaugh over a younger candidate.  Harbaugh may be the best candidate, and the interest from the NFL, like the Chargers, will be there, but they will go for someone younger.

Schefter should be on the no no list around here. I don’t care if he’s a Michigan alum and keeps a stupid helmet on his bookcase. He only cares about protecting the shield and if it hurts Michigan in the process so be it. It doesn’t have to work like that, see Rich Eisen.
